CIRCUIT TEST
If a no-start condition exists, ensure battery is fully charged. Touch test light to starter solenoid "S" terminal. Place gear selector in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T). On M/T, fully depress clutch pedal. On all models, turn ignition switch to START position. If test light does not glow, check ignition switch, restart relay, clutch switch/inhibit switch and wiring circuit. If test light glows, check battery cable connections. If connections are okay, starter or solenoid is defective.
CRANKING TEST
- Connect voltmeter and ammeter to battery. (Scheme 3) Ensure battery is fully charged. Disconnect ignition coil secondary wire from distributor cap, and attach it to ground. Crank engine and observe meters.
- Ensure cranking voltage is more than 8.4 volts and current draw is less than 250 amps. If readings are not as specified, repair or replace starter.

IGNITION SWITCH TEST
If ignition switch is suspected of being faulty, disconnect harness connector from switch. Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity between specified switch terminals. (Scheme 4) If continuity is not as specified, replace ignition switch.

FIELD COIL TEST
Check field coil for open circuits. Continuity should exist between field coil terminals. If continuity does not exist, replace field coil. Check for continuity between field coils and case body. If continuity exists, replace field coil.
ARMATURE TEST
Check continuity between each commutator segment. If no continuity exists, replace armature. Check continuity between commutator and shaft. If continuity exists, replace armature.
PINION TEST
With starter solenoid on starter, attach jumper leads from positive battery post to terminal "S", and from negative post to terminal "M" on starter solenoid to energize pull-in windings. Starter pinion should extend 0.002-0.060" (0.05-1.50 mm) from rest position. If not, replace shim between starter solenoid and starter housing.
NO-LOAD TEST
Fix starter on test bench as indicated. (Scheme 5) Close switch, measure and record current, voltage and speed of starter. See STARTER SPECIFICATIONS for proper operating specifications.
