CHARGE WARNING LIGHT CHECK

Note. If any fuse is blown, charge warning light will illuminate even if charging system is working properly.

  1. Perform «PRELIMINARY INSPECTION»(ref-4242-S21565308822000061600000) . Turn ignition on. If CHARGE warning light illuminates, go to next step. If CHARGE warning light does not illuminate, go to step 6 .
  2. Start engine. If CHARGE warning light does not turn off, go to next step. If CHARGE warning light turns off, turn ignition off. Disconnect 4-pin generator harness connector. Turn ignition on. Check voltage between body ground and generator harness connector terminal No. 1 (Black/Yellow wire). If battery voltage is present, warning light circuit is okay. Perform «GENERATOR CONTROL SYSTEM TEST»(ref-4242-S07128739662000061600000) . If battery voltage is not present, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between generator and instrument panel fuse/relay block.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect generator 4-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on. If CHARGE warning light illuminates, go to next step. If CHARGE warning light does not illuminate, perform «GENERATOR/REGULATOR TEST»(ref-4242-S11530987532000061600000) .
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect 16-pin Integrated Control (IC) unit harness connector. IC unit is located behind left kick panel, behind fuse/relay block. Turn ignition on. If CHARGE warning light does not illuminate, go to next step. If CHARGE warning light illuminates, repair short to ground in White/Blue wire. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-4242-S08062819682000061600000) .
  5. Turn ignition off. Replace IC unit with a known-good unit. Recheck system operation. If CHARGE warning light still does not operate as indicated, replace ABS control unit (located behind right kick panel) with a known-good unit. Recheck system operation.
  6. Turn ignition off. Check fuse No. 4 (15-amp) located in instrument panel fuse/relay block. Replace fuse as necessary and recheck system operation. If fuse is okay, go to next step.
  7. Disconnect 4-pin generator harness connector. Connect a jumper wire between generator harness connector terminal No. 3 (White/Blue wire) and ground. Turn ignition on. If CHARGE warning light illuminates, perform «GENERATOR/REGULATOR TEST»(ref-4242-S11530987532000061600000) . If CHARGE warning light does not illuminate, check for blown indicator light bulb. Replace as necessary. If bulb is okay, repair open in White/Blue wire between generator and CHARGE warning light.

BRUSHES

Remove brush holder from generator. Using vernier caliper, measure brush length. (Scheme 5) If brush length is not as specified, replace brushes. See BRUSH LENGTH SPECIFICATIONS table.

ROTOR

Using an ohmmeter, ensure continuity exists between rotor slip rings. (Scheme 6) If continuity does not exist, replace generator. Ensure continuity does not exist between slip rings and rotor, or between slip rings and rotor shaft. If continuity exists, replace generator.

STATOR

Ensure continuity exists between each pair of leads on stator winding. (Scheme 7) If continuity does not exist, replace generator. Ensure continuity does not exist between any stator winding lead and coil core. If continuity exists, replace generator.
