CONDENSER & COOLING FANS DO NOT OPERATE
Check restart relay. See appropriate component test in this article. Check ground and wiring harness connections.
CONDENSER FAN DOES NOT OPERATE
Check 30 amp A/C condenser fan fuse No. 4. A/C condenser fan fuse is located in fuse/relay box, on left side of engine compartment, front of strut tower. Check condenser fan relay, condenser fan motor, ground and wiring harness connections. See appropriate component test in this article.
COOLING FAN DOES NOT OPERATE
Check cooling fan 20 amp fuse No. 3. Cooling fan fuse is located in fuse/relay box, on left side of engine compartment, front of strut tower. Check cooling fan relay, cooling fan motor, ground and wiring harness connections. See appropriate component test in this article.
COOLING FAN DOES NOT OPERATE AT HIGH COOLANT TEMP
Check cooling fan thermoswitch, located on lower left side of radiator. See appropriate component test in this article. Check wiring harness connections.
COOLING & CONDENSER FANS DO NOT STOP RUNNING
Check Cooling Fan Thermoswitch. Check A/C Cycling Switch. See appropriate component test in this article. Check wiring harness connections.
COOLING FAN THERMOSWITCH
- To test cooling fan thermoswitch, remove the thermoswitch from lower left side of the radiator. Heat thermoswitch in water to approximately 180-190°F (82-88°C).
- Using ohmmeter, ensure continuity exists between thermoswitch terminals. Reduce water temperature to approximately 167-178°F (75-81°C). Continuity should not exist between thermoswitch terminals. Replace thermoswitch if it does not function as described.
A/C CYCLING SWITCH
Testing procedure is not available from manufacturer.
Scheme 1
- Cooling fan and condenser fan relays are located in fuse/relay box, On left side of engine compartment, front of strut tower. Disconnect relay connector. Using an ohmmeter, ensure continuity does not exist between relay terminals No. 2 and No. 4. (Scheme 1)
- Connect battery power across terminals No. 1 and 3. Continuity should exist between terminals No. 2 and No. 4 when relay is energized. Replace relay if tests are not as specified.
Scheme 2
- Restart relay is located in fuse/relay box, on left side of engine compartment, in front of strut tower. Disconnect restart relay connector. Using an ohmmeter, ensure continuity exists between restart relay terminals No. 1 and No. 2 and does not exist between terminals No. 3 and No. 4. (Scheme 2)
- Connect battery power across terminals No. 5 and No. 6. Continuity should exist between restart relay terminals No. 3 and No. 4, and should not exist between terminals No. 1 and No. 2. Replace restart relay if tests are not as specified.
COOLING FAN MOTOR
Unplug cooling fan motor connector. Connect battery and ammeter to cooling fan motor terminals. (Scheme 3) Cooling fan should operate smoothly and amperage draw should be 5.8-7.4 amps.
Scheme 3
CONDENSER FAN MOTOR
Unplug condenser fan motor connector. Using a 12-volt battery, connect positive battery lead to condenser fan motor connector terminal No. 1 and negative battery lead to terminal No. 2. (Scheme 4) Condenser fan motor should operate. If condenser fan motor does not operate, replace condenser fan motor
