DESCRIPTION
Steering columns incorporate plastic shear pins in the steering shafts. Upon vehicle frontal impact, plastic pins will shear, allowing the column and shaft to collapse.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| CAUTION | Applying excessive pressure or causing impact to mainshaft, during removal or installation procedures, may cause the column/shaft assembly to collapse. |
Scheme 1
- Ensure steering wheel is centered. Disconnect negative battery cable. On models with sport type steering wheel (3-spoke), remove lower horn pad screw from rear side of steering wheel. (Scheme 1) Grasping bottom of pad, pull pad outward slightly and then push upward to remove pad clip from steering wheel. Disconnect wiring connector.
- On models with standard type steering wheel (2-spoke), use a screwdriver to pry horn pad off. Disconnect wiring connector.
- On all models, remove steering wheel hold-down nut. Scribe reassembly reference marks on steering wheel and shaft. Use Puller (J-29752) or suitable steering wheel puller to remove steering wheel. DO NOT apply hammer-type blows to column/shaft assembly.
- To install, apply dielectric grease to horn ring. Install steering wheel, aligning reassembly reference marks. Tighten steering wheel retaining nut to 22-29 ft. lbs. (30-39 N.m). Connect horn pad wiring connector. Install horn pad, ensuring top of horn pad clips into place before installing bottom screw.
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove horn pad and steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD . Remove column shrouds and lower instrument panel trim panel. Disconnect switch wiring connector behind lower instrument panel trim panel. Remove tie-straps retaining harness to column. Remove combination switch retaining bolts and slide switch from column. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove column shrouds and lower instrument panel trim panel. Disconnect ignition switch 6-wire and 2-wire harness connectors and remove tie-straps retaining harness to column. Remove ignition switch retaining screw from ignition switch/column lock assembly. (Scheme 2) Remove ignition switch. To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure proper operation of steering lock and ignition switch mechanism.

IGNITION SWITCH & COLUMN LOCK ASSEMBLY
Note. Ignition lock set removal procedures are not available form manufacturer.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove horn pad and steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD»(/isuzu/amigo/i-1989-1994/remont/steering-column/#steering-column). Remove upper and lower column shrouds and lower instrument panel. (Scheme 3) Disconnect both ignition switch and combination switch wiring connectors located behind lower instrument panel. Remove tie-straps retaining harnesses to column.
- Remove combination switch retaining bolts and slide switch from shaft. (Scheme 3) Remove snap ring and bushing from in front of ignition switch. Turn ignition switch to ON position to unlock column.
- Remove ignition switch and column lock assembly retaining bolts from rear of switch assembly. To access switch assembly retaining bolts it may be necessary to remove upper column bracket bolts from instrument panel in order to lower steering column. Slide switch assembly from shaft.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure proper operation of steering lock and ignition switch mechanism before completing reassembly of column components. Tighten all bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/isuzu/amigo/i-1989-1994/remont/steering-column/#steering-column) table at end of article.

Scheme 4
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove horn pad and steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD»(/isuzu/amigo/i-1989-1994/remont/steering-column/#steering-column). Remove steering column shrouds and lower instrument panel trim panel. Disconnect all column switches wiring connectors and remove tie-straps retaining harnesses to column. Remove combination switch retaining bolts and slide switch from shaft. (Scheme 3)
- Remove snap ring and bushing. (Scheme 3) Remove ignition switch/column lock assembly retaining bolts and slide switch from shaft. Under engine hood, mark steering gear unit shaft and universal joint/coupler for installation reference. (Scheme 4) Remove universal joint/coupler clamp bolt.
- Remove lower column bracket bolts. Remove upper column bracket bolts. (Scheme 3) Separate universal joint/coupler from steering gear unit shaft. Remove steering column.
Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure. Align reference marks on universal joint/coupler and steering gear unit shaft. Tighten all bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
