Removal
- Release fuel pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-8312-S17092361182000082200000) . Remove hood. Disconnect battery cables. Drain cooling system and engine oil. Remove radiator.
- Remove accessory drive belts, generator, and cooling fan assembly. Remove power steering pump and A/C compressor with hoses attached, and secure aside. Disconnect necessary air intake hoses, vacuum hoses, fuel hoses, coolant hoses, control cables, and electrical connectors.
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove lower engine covers. Remove exhaust pipes (as necessary) for engine and transmission removal. Disconnect oil cooler lines, control linkages and electrical connections from transmission. Remove oil dipstick tube from transmission. NOTE: Check markings on heads of drive shaft bolts before removing. Bolts must be installed in original location.
- Mark drive shaft flange at rear axle for installation reference. Remove retaining bolts and drive shaft. Plug drive shaft opening in transmission. Remove starter motor.
- Remove torque converter-to-flywheel bolts. Support transmission with transmission jack. Remove transmission crossmember located below transmission. Remove transmission support brace-to-cylinder block. Support engine with hoist.
- Remove transmission-to-cylinder block bolts. Remove transmission. Remove engine mount-to-frame nuts. Lift engine from vehicle.
Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Adjust all control cables, linkages and fluid levels.
Note. The following procedure includes the intake manifold collector (upper intake manifold/plenum) and the lower intake manifold.
- Release fuel system pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-8312-S17092361182000082200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Allow engine to cool to room temperature. Disconnect battery. Drain cooling system. Disconnect and label vacuum and coolant lines, and harness connectors that are attached to related intake manifold components. Disconnect throttle linkage. Remove intake manifold collector.
- Remove fuel feed and fuel return hoses from injector fuel tube assembly. Disconnect all injector harness connectors. Remove injector fuel tube assembly (as needed).
- Remove intake manifold using correct removal sequence. (Scheme 2) Remove intake manifold.
Using NEW gaskets, install intake manifold assembly. Tighten bolts to specification in using correct tightening sequence. see scheme 3 See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
