Transmission

Note. The transmission fluid level cannot be read accurately if the vehicle has been driven for an extended period at high speeds, or in city traffic in hot weather, or it is being used to pull a trailer. Wait about 30 minutes or until fluid has cooled down before checking fluid level.

Scheme 15

Scheme 15: Transmission
  1. Warm up engine.
  2. Check for fluid leakage.
  3. Remove tightening bolt transmission fluid level gauge.
  4. Before driving, fluid level can be checked at fluid temperatures of 86-122°F (30-50°C) using COLD range on dipstick as follows: Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake. Start engine and move gearshift lever through each gear position. Place gearshift lever in "P" position. Check fluid level with engine idling. Remove dipstick and wipe clean with lint-free paper. Insert dipstick into fill pipe as far as it will go. Remove dipstick and note reading. If reading is at low side of range, add fluid through fill tube. See «RECOMMENDED FLUIDS»(ref-166958-S04230502772004100100000). Do not overfill.
  5. Drive vehicle for about 5 minutes in urban areas.
  6. Recheck fluid level at fluid temperature of approximately 149°F (65°C). NOTE: Fluid level will be greatly affected by temperature as shown in figure (Scheme 15) Therefore, be certain to perform operation while checking data with CONSULT-II as follows: Connect CONSULT-II to data link connector. Select "MAIN SIGNALS" in "DATA MONITOR" mode for "A/T" with CONSULT-II. Read out value of "ATF TEMP 1".
  7. Recheck fluid level at temperatures of approximately 149°F (65°C) using "HOT" range on dipstick.
  8. Check fluid condition. If fluid is very dark or smells burned, see appropriate DIAGNOSIS article. Flush cooling system after repair of transmission. If transmission fluid contains frictional material (clutches, bands, etc.), replace radiator and flush cooler line using cleaning solvent and compressed air after repair of transmission.
  9. Install removed transmission dipstick in fill pipe. Tighten dipstick retaining bolt to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166958-S37214209502004100100000).

Q45 use genuine Nissan Matic "J" ATF. Also, refer to Technical Service Bulletin INFINITI; SPECIAL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID REQUIREMENT .

  1. Warm up transmission fluid.
  2. Stop engine.
  3. Remove retaining bolt for transmission dipstick.
  4. Remove drain plug, and allow fluid to drain. Refill with new transmission fluid. See «RECOMMENDED FLUIDS»(ref-166958-S04230502772004100100000) . Reinstall drain plug. Tighten drain plug to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166958-S37214209502004100100000) . Always refill same volume with drained fluid using the following steps: To replace transmission fluid, pour in new fluid in fill pipe with the engine idling and at the same time drain the old fluid from the radiator cooler hose return side. When the fluid coming out is about the same color of the new fluid, the replacement is complete. The amount of new transmission fluid to use should be about 30 to 50 percent of stipulated amount.
  5. Run engine at idle speed for 5 minutes.
  6. Check fluid level and condition. See «CHECKING FLUID LEVELS»(ref-166958-S23707269202004100100000) .
  7. Install transmission dipstick in fill pipe. Tighten dipstick retaining bolt to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166958-S37214209502004100100000) .

Oil Cooler Cleaning Procedure

  1. Position an oil pan under the automatic transmission's inlet and outlet cooler hoses.
  2. Identify the inlet and outlet fluid cooler hoses. (Scheme 16)
  3. Disconnect the fluid cooler inlet and outlet rubber hoses from the steel cooler tubes or bypass valve.
  4. Allow any transmission fluid that remains in the cooler hoses to drain into the oil pan.
  5. Insert the extension adapter hose of a can of Transmission Cooler Cleaner (P/N 999MP-AM006) into the cooler outlet hose. (Scheme 17)
  6. Hold the hose and can as high as possible and spray Transmission Cooler Cleaner in a continuous stream into the cooler outlet hose until fluid flows out of the cooler inlet hose for 5 seconds.
  7. Insert the tip of an air gun into the end of the cooler outlet hose.
  8. Wrap a shop rag around the air gun tip and of the cooler outlet hose.
  9. Blow compressed air regulated to 70-130 psi through the cooler outlet hose for 10 seconds to force out any remaining fluid
  10. Repeat steps 5 - 9, three additional times.
  11. Position an oil pan under the banjo bolts that connect the fluid cooler steel lines to the transmission.
  12. Remove the banjo bolts.
  13. Flush each steel line from the cooler side back toward the transmission by spraying Transmission Cooler Cleaner in a continuous stream for 5 seconds
  14. Blow compressed air regulated to 70-130 psi through each steel line from the cooler side back toward the transmission for 10 seconds to force out any remaining fluid.
  15. Ensure all debris is removed from the steel cooler lines.
  16. Ensure all debris is removed from the banjo bolts and fittings.
  17. Perform «OIL COOLER DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE»(ref-166958-S02964291522004100400000).

ON-VEHICLE REPAIRS

Various components may be serviced without transmission removal, depending on application. For servicing of these components, see appropriate component under ADJUSTMENTS and/or REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . For additional information on testing electrical components, see appropriate DIAGNOSIS article.

PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH

See SHIFT LINKAGE .

Scheme 18

Scheme 18: SHIFT LINKAGE
  1. Loosen nut of control rod. (Scheme 18)
  2. Place PNP switch and selector lever in "P" position.
  3. While pressing lower lever toward rear of vehicle (in "P" position direction), tighten nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166958-S37214209502004100100000).

VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR

Manufacturer refers to vehicle speed sensor as revolution sensor. For removal & installation procedures, see REVOLUTION SENSOR .
