Removal

  1. Release fuel pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-48974-S16924760832001011500000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect battery cables. Remove hood. Drain cooling system and engine oil. Remove radiator and shroud.
  2. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove power steering pump and A/C compressor with hoses attached, and secure aside. Remove alternator. Disconnect necessary air intake hoses, vacuum hoses, fuel hoses, coolant hoses, control cables and electrical connections.
  3. Raise and support vehicle so engine can be removed from bottom of engine compartment. Remove lower engine covers. Disconnect exhaust pipes at exhaust manifolds. Disconnect oil cooler lines, control linkages and electrical connections from transmission.
  4. Place reference mark on drive shaft flange at rear axle. Remove retaining bolts and drive shaft. Plug drive shaft opening in transmission to prevent oil leakage. Support transmission with transmission jack. Remove transmission mount bolts and transmission crossmember.
  5. Disconnect steering shaft at lower joint assembly. Support engine with hoist. Disconnect stabilizer bar links at lower control arms. Remove retaining bolts, frame brackets and stabilizer bar.
  6. Remove both tension rods with brackets. Tension rods are bolted to lower control arms and on brackets below radiator. Disconnect brackets below radiator.
  7. Disconnect lower control arms at crossmember, located below engine. Remove retaining nuts, and separate tie rods from steering knuckles. Remove engine mount-to-crossmember retaining nuts. Support crossmember with floor jack. Remove retaining bolts and crossmember located below engine.
  8. Slowly lower transmission jack and engine hoist. Remove engine and transmission from bottom of engine compartment.

Installation

To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Adjust all fluid levels, control cables and linkages.

CAUTIONTighten stabilizer bar, lower control arm and tension rod retaining bolts/nuts with vehicle on ground and at normal operating height.
  1. Release fuel pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-48974-S16924760832001011500000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Drain cooling system. Disconnect necessary air intake hoses, coolant hoses, fuel hose, vacuum hoses, electrical connections and control cables.
  2. Remove necessary valves, etc., for access to upper and lower intake manifolds. Remove retaining bolts and upper intake manifold. (Scheme 1) Disconnect fuel injector harness. Remove fuel injector rail with fuel injectors and sub-fuel lines attached. CAUTION: DO NOT allow rubber washers, located below fuel injector rail, to fall into lower intake manifold. CAUTION: Note lower intake component location for installation reference. Components must be installed in correct location for fuel injector rail installation.
  3. Remove retaining bolts, lower intake manifold components and gaskets. (Scheme 1)

  1. Install gaskets and lower intake manifolds with retaining bolts loosely installed. Using NEW "O" rings, install fuel injector rail with fuel injectors, and slightly tighten retaining bolts.
  2. Install upper intake manifold, and slightly tighten retaining bolts. This provides proper alignment of lower intake manifold components. Tighten lower intake manifold retaining bolts to hold components in proper location.
  3. Remove upper intake manifold. Tighten lower intake manifold bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-48974-S39079168232001011500000).
  4. Install sub-fuel line. Tighten retaining bolts to specification in sequence. (Scheme 2) Tighten fuel injector rail retaining bolts to specification in sequence. (Scheme 3) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-48974-S39079168232001011500000).
  5. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. Fill cooling system.
