PROGRAMMING NEW ID CODE
Note. This procedure will erase all previous identity codes and render all previously programmed remote controllers inoperative (until reprogrammed). All remote controllers to be used with system must be programmed at the same time.
Note. A maximum of 4 remote controllers can be programmed. Any attempt to program more than 4 controllers will be ignored. If same identity code is entered more than once, entry is ignored even though hazard warning lights will still flash twice.
- Close and lock all doors. Erase original identity code(s) by inserting and removing key from ignition switch more than 6 times within 10 seconds. Hazard warning lights should flash twice. Turn ignition switch to ACC position.
- Push any button on new remote controller once. Hazard warning lights should flash twice, indicating ID code has been entered. If identity code cannot be entered, repair multi-remote system.
- For each additional remote controller to be programmed, manually release door lock, and lock again by using door panel switch. Repeat step 2 . If no additional remote controllers are to be used, exit programming mode by unlocking and opening driver's door.
ALL REMOTE CONTROLLER FUNCTIONS INOPERATIVE
Perform the following diagnostic procedures: REMOTE CONTROLLER BATTERY CHECK , KEY SWITCH CHECK , DOOR SWITCH CHECK and POWER SUPPLY & GROUND CIRCUIT CHECKS under SYSTEM TESTS. Also, check remote controller function. Perform PROGRAMMING NEW ID CODE procedure under PROGRAMMING REMOTE CONTROLLER.
DOME LIGHT FUNCTION INOPERATIVE FROM REMOTE CONTROLLER
Perform the following diagnostic procedure: DOME LIGHT FUNCTION CHECK under SYSTEM TESTS. Also, check remote controller function. Perform PROGRAMMING NEW ID CODE procedure under PROGRAMMING REMOTE CONTROLLER.
DOOR LOCK OR UNLOCK FUNCTION INOPERATIVE FROM REMOTE CONTROLLER
Perform the following diagnostic procedures: KEY SWITCH CHECK , DOOR SWITCH CHECK and DOOR UNLOCK SENSOR CHECK under SYSTEM TESTS. Also, check remote controller function. Perform PROGRAMMING NEW ID CODE procedure under PROGRAMMING REMOTE CONTROLLER.
HAZARD WARNING LIGHTS FUNCTION INOPERATIVE FROM REMOTE CONTROLLER
Perform the following diagnostic procedure: HAZARD REMINDER CHECK under SYSTEM TESTS. Also, check remote controller function. Perform PROGRAMMING NEW ID CODE procedure under PROGRAMMING REMOTE CONTROLLER.
NEW REMOTE CONTROLLER WILL NOT PROGRAM
Perform the following diagnostic procedures: REMOTE CONTROLLER BATTERY CHECK , KEY SWITCH CHECK , DOOR SWITCH CHECK , DOOR UNLOCK SENSOR CHECK and POWER SUPPLY & GROUND CIRCUIT CHECKS under SYSTEM TESTS. Also, check remote controller function. Perform PROGRAMMING NEW ID CODE procedure under PROGRAMMING REMOTE CONTROLLER.
PANIC ALARM FUNCTION INOPERATIVE FROM REMOTE CONTROLLER
If panic alarm does not operate properly, repair anti-theft system. See appropriate ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS article. Also, check remote controller function. Perform PROGRAMMING NEW ID CODE procedure under PROGRAMMING REMOTE CONTROLLER.

WIRE COLOR ABBREVIATIONS
DOME LIGHT FUNCTION CHECK
- Check for correct dome light operation. Turn interior light switch to DOOR position. Open any door and observe dome light. If dome light operates correctly, go to next step. If dome light does not operate correctly, see appropriate wiring diagram in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article.
- With interior light switch in DOOR position, measure voltage by backprobing between SECU 18-pin connector terminal No. 8 (Red/Blue wire) and ground. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, inspect Red/Blue or Gray/Red wire between SECU and interior light switch for open or short.
- Measure voltage between SECU terminal No. 8 and ground. Battery voltage should be present. Depress UNLOCK button on remote control. Battery voltage should not be present for about 30 seconds. If voltage is as specified, retest system. If voltage is not as specified, replace SECU.
DOOR SWITCH CHECK
- Measure voltage by backprobing between appropriate SECU terminals and ground. See «DOOR SWITCH INPUT SIGNAL TEST»(ref-4943-S03911307302000072900000) table. If voltages are not as specified, go to next step. If voltages are as specified, door switch is okay.
- Perform appropriate door switch test. See «SWITCHES»(ref-4943-S13684854422000072900000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If switch is okay, inspect door switch ground circuit and/or Red/White or Red/Blue wire between SECU and door switch for open or short.

DOOR UNLOCK SENSOR CHECK
- Measure voltage by backprobing between appropriate SECU terminals and ground. See «DOOR UNLOCK SENSOR CHECK»(ref-4943-S42650919762000072900000) table. If voltages are not as specified, go to next step. If voltages are as specified door unlock sensor is okay.
- Perform door unlock sensor test. See «SENSORS»(ref-4943-S04645122652000072900000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If sensor is okay, inspect unlock sensor ground circuit (Black wire) and/or Orange wire (front passenger door), Yellow/Red wire (front driver door) or Yellow wire (both rear doors) for open or short between SECU and door unlock sensor.

DOOR UNLOCK SENSOR CHECK
HAZARD REMINDER CHECK
- Check for correct hazard light operation. Turn hazard light switch to ON position and observe hazard lights. If hazard lights operate correctly, go to next step. If hazard lights do not operate correctly, see appropriate wiring diagram in EXTERIOR LIGHTS article.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) 18-pin connector and apply ground to terminal No. 7. (Scheme 4) If hazard lights do not operate correctly, go to next step. If hazard lights operate correctly, replace SECU.
- Check multi-remote control relay operation. See «MULTI-REMOTE CONTROL RELAY»(ref-4943-S18640988082000072900000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If multi-remote control relay operates correctly, go to next step. If multi-remote control relay does not operate correctly, replace multi-remote control relay.
- Disconnect multi-remote control relay 6-pin connector and measure voltage between terminal No. 1 and ground. (Scheme 6) If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, inspect the following: Fuse No. 20 (10-amp) located in fuse block J/B under left side of instrument panel. Green/Orange wire between multi-remote control relay and fuse No. 20 for an open or short.
- With multi-remote control relay disconnected, measure voltage between multi-remote control relay harness connector terminals No. 3 and 5. Also, measure voltage between terminals No. 6 and 7. If battery voltage is present, inspect Pink wire between multi-remote control relay and SECU for an open or short. If battery voltage is not present between one or both measurements, go to next step.
- If battery voltage is not present between terminals No. 3 and 5, inspect Green/Orange wire between multi-remote control relay and fuse No. 20, or Green/Yellow wire between multi-remote control relay and right turn signal. If battery voltage is not present between terminals No. 6 and 7, inspect Green/Orange wire between multi-remote control relay and fuse No. 20, or Green/Black wire between multi-remote control relay and left turn signal.
HORN REMINDER CHECK
- Inspect horn system. Press horn button. If horn sounds, go to next step. If horn does not sound, inspect and repair horn system. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-4943-S23244404412000072900000).
- Ensure ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) 24-pin connector and apply ground to terminal No. 19 (Green/White wire). (Scheme 5) If horn does not sound, inspect Green/White wire between horn relay and SECU for open or short. If horn sounds, replace SECU.
KEY SWITCH CHECK
- Measure voltage by backprobing between Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) 24-pin connector terminal No. 32 (Blue wire) and ground. With ignition key inserted into lock cylinder, voltage should be about 12 volts. With ignition key removed from lock cylinder, voltage should be zero volts. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, key switch is okay.
- Disconnect key switch 2-pin connector located on underside of steering column, under column shroud. Check continuity between terminals No. 1 and 2. Continuity should be present with ignition key inserted into lock cylinder. Continuity should not be present with key removed from lock cylinder. If continuity is not as specified, replace key switch. If continuity is as specified, inspect the following: Fuse No. 24 (10-amp) located in fuse block J/B under left side of instrument panel. Pink wire between key switch and fuse No. 24 for an open or short. Blue wire between key switch and SECU for an open or short.
POWER SUPPLY & GROUND CIRCUIT CHECKS
- Disconnect Smart Entrance Control Unit (SECU) 18-pin connector and measure voltage between ground and terminals No. 10 (Pink wire) and No. 11 (White/Blue wire). (Scheme 4) If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, inspect the following: Fusible link "D" (30-amp) located in fuse and fusible link box on left side of engine compartment. Fuse No. 24 (10-amp) located in fuse block J/B under left side of instrument panel. M13 Circuit breaker located in-line between SECU terminal No. 11 and fusible link "D". White/Blue wire between M13 circuit breaker and SECU, and White/Black wire Between M13 circuit breaker and fusible link "D" for an open or short.
- Disconnect SECU 24-pin connector and measure voltage between terminal No. 21 and ground with ignition switch turned to ACC position. (Scheme 5) If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, inspect the following: Fuse No. 10 (7.5-amp) located in fuse block J/B under left side of instrument panel. Green wire between SECU and fuse No. 10 for an open or short.
- With SECU 24-pin connector removed, measure voltage between terminal No. 33 and ground with ignition switch turned to ON position. (Scheme 5) If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, inspect the following: Fuse No. 8 (10-amp) located in fuse block J/B under left side of instrument panel. Green/Red wire between SECU and fuse No. 8 for an open or short.
- With SECU 18-pin connector removed, check continuity between terminal No. 16 and ground. (Scheme 4) If continuity is present, power supply and ground circuits are okay. If continuity is not present, repair poor ground connection in Black wire between SECU and ground (located behind left kick panel).
REMOTE CONTROLLER BATTERY CHECK
Note. Remote controller will not function if battery is not installed correctly.
Remove battery from remote controller. Measure voltage between battery positive and negative terminals. If voltage is 2.5-3.0 volts, battery is okay. Check battery terminals inside remote controller for corrosion or damage. If voltage is not as specified, replace remote controller battery.
Scheme 6
- Disconnect multi-remote control relay. Measure resistance between multi-remote control relay terminal No. 2 and terminals No. 3, 5, 6 and 7. (Scheme 6) If resistance is 5 ohms or less for any measurement, replace multi-remote control relay. If all measurements are more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Connect a fused jumper wire between positive battery terminal and multi-remote control relay terminal No. 1. Using a test light, check for voltage at multi-remote control relay terminal No. 2. If voltage is present, go to next step. If voltage is not present, replace multi-remote control relay.
- Connect a fused jumper wire between positive battery terminal and multi-remote control relay terminal No. 1. Connect another jumper wire between negative battery terminal and multi-remote control relay terminal No. 2. Check continuity between multi-remote control relay terminals No. 3 and 5, and between terminals No. 6 and 7. If continuity is present, multi-remote control relay is okay. If continuity is not present, replace multi-remote control relay.
Door Unlock Sensor
Disconnect door unlock sensor 4-pin connector. With actuator in unlocked position, check for continuity between door unlock sensor terminals No. 2 and 4. (Scheme 7) If continuity is not present, replace door unlock sensor.

Door Switches (Driver's Front Door)
Disconnect driver's side front door switch connector. Check for continuity between switch terminal No. 1 (Red/White wire) and ground. Check for continuity between switch terminals No. 2 (Sky Blue wire) and No. 3 (Black wire). Continuity should be present at both measurements with switch open. (Scheme 8) Replace door switch if continuity is not as specified.
Door Switches (Right Front & Both Rear Side Doors)
Disconnect driver's side front door switch connector and check for continuity between ground and switch terminal No. 1 (Red/White wire on rear doors, or Red/Blue wire on right front door). Continuity should only be present with switch open. (Scheme 8) Replace door switch if continuity is not as specified.
