Testing & Diagnostics 9 illustrations ~2315 words

INTRODUCTION

Note. Testing individual components does not isolate shorts or opens. Perform all voltage tests using a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens. For specific circuit diagrams to aid in diagnostic testing, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.

Before testing separate components or systems, perform procedures in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. Since many computer controlled and monitored components set a trouble code if they malfunction, also perform procedures in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.

ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM)

Note. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article.

Ground Circuits

  1. Turn ignition off. Check resistance between chassis ground and ECM ground terminals. See «ECM GROUND TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION»(/hyundai/tiburon/i-facelift-1999-2002/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-system-component-testing) table. If less than 2 ohms exists, go to next step. If more than 2 ohms exists, repair wire(s) between ECM and ground.
  2. Connect voltmeter negative lead to chassis ground. Connect positive lead to each ECM ground terminal. See «ECM GROUND TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION»(/hyundai/tiburon/i-facelift-1999-2002/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-system-component-testing) table. With engine running, voltmeter should indicate less than one volt. If voltmeter reading is greater than one volt, check for open, corrosion or loose connection in ground circuit.

Disconnect ECM harness connector. Turn ignition and A/C switches to ON position. Using a DVOM, check voltage to A/C switch at ECM connector terminals. If battery voltage is present, circuit is okay. If battery voltage is not present, repair affected circuit and retest.

Idle Position Switch (Sonata 2.4L)

Note. Idle position switch is an integral part of the Throttle Position (TP) sensor.

Turn ignition off. Disconnect TP sensor 4-pin connector. Check for continuity between TP sensor terminals No. 1 (Light Blue/Black wire) and No. 3 (Pink wire). Continuity should exist when throttle is in idle position. Continuity should not exist when throttle is not in idle position. If continuity is not as specified, ensure accelerator and cruise control cables are correctly adjusted. If cable adjustment is okay, replace TP sensor.

Power Steering Pressure Switch (Sonata 2.4L)

  1. Disconnect power steering pressure switch connector located on power steering pump. Check for continuity between switch and chassis ground. Continuity should not exist with wheels in straight-ahead position and engine idling. Continuity should exist when wheels are turned.
  2. Turn engine off. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between switch connector and ground. If battery voltage is present, circuit is okay. If battery voltage is not present, repair circuit between switch and ECM.

Transaxle Range (TR) Switch (A/T)

  1. TR switch is mounted to transaxle, near shift lever mechanism. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TR switch. Set TR switch to "P" position. Check for continuity between specified terminals. See «TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH TESTING»(/hyundai/tiburon/i-facelift-1999-2002/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-system-component-testing) table. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, ensure TR switch is adjusted correctly. Replace TR switch if adjustment is correct.
  2. Turn ignition off. Set TR switch to "N" position. Check for continuity between specified terminals. See «TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH TESTING»(/hyundai/tiburon/i-facelift-1999-2002/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-system-component-testing) table. (Scheme 36)or (Scheme 37). FUEL EVAPORATION

Note. For further EVAP system testing, see related DTC in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.

EVAP Purge Control Solenoid Valve

  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect EVAP purge control solenoid valve harness connector. Measure resistance between solenoid valve terminals. If resistance is 20-32 ohms at 68°F (20°C), go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace EVAP purge control solenoid valve.
  2. Disconnect Black, Red-stripped vacuum hose. Connect a vacuum pump, and apply vacuum. Using a fused jumper wire, apply battery voltage and ground to solenoid valve terminals. When solenoid valve is energized, vacuum should not hold. When solenoid valve is not energized, vacuum should hold. If EVAP purge control solenoid valve operates as specified, go to next step. Replace EVAP purge control solenoid valve if it does not operate as specified.
  3. Connect a vacuum gauge to Black, Red-stripped vacuum hose. Start engine and allow to idle at a temperature of 176-203°F (80-95°C). Increase and decrease engine speed while monitoring manifold vacuum. As engine speed changes, vacuum should stay constant. If no vacuum is detected or very little, clean vacuum port and/or replace Black, Red-stripped vacuum hose.

Two-Way Valve

Apply vacuum to inlet side and then to outlet side of two-way valve. Vacuum applied to inlet side of two-way valve should hold. Vacuum applied to outlet side of two-way valve should not hold. Replace two-way valve if operation is not as specified.

PCV Valve

Disconnect vacuum hose from PCV valve. Remove PCV valve from valve cover and reconnect to vacuum hose. Start engine and allow to idle. Cover open end of PCV valve with finger, and check for intake vacuum. If intake vacuum is felt, PCV valve is opening properly. If intake vacuum is not felt, clean PCV valve, vacuum hose and/or replace as necessary.
