DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE
Note. DTCs will be recorded at various operating times and conditions. Some DTCs require operation of sensor or switch for 5 seconds, while other components require operation for 5 minutes or longer at normal operating temperature, vehicle speed, and load. Therefore, some DTCs may not set in a service bay, and may require road testing to duplicate the conditions under which the code will set.
Diagnosis of computerized engine control system should be performed in the following order
- Ensure all mechanical engine systems other than computerized systems (i.e., compression, ignition, etc.) are operating properly. DO NOT proceed with testing unless all other problems have been repaired. If MIL is on, see «RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES»(ref-3130-S19621668472000041800000) . For diagnosing hard codes, see appropriate DTC IDENTIFICATION table under «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS»(ref-3130-S07902322592000041800000) to determine the probable cause of malfunction.
- For diagnosing intermittent codes, proceed to INTERMITTENTS in «TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES»(ref-3137) article. Inspect condition of system harness by performing recommended voltage or continuity checks. See appropriate wiring diagram in «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-3147) article for information on specific circuit configuration. Inspect condition of individual components. Repair or replace components as needed.
- Recheck system operation after repair is completed. If DTC still exists, substitute known-good ECM, then retest system. Verify system is repaired. After repairs have been completed, clear DTC(s). See «CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES»(ref-3130-S23540189222000041800000) .
RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
Note. For specific scan tool operating procedures, see the scan tool manufacturer's instruction manual.
- Before entering on-board diagnostics, see «SERVICE PRECAUTIONS»(ref-3130-S33293560652000041800000). Turn ignition off. Locate Data Link Connector (DLC) under left side of instrument panel, and connect scan tool. (Scheme 30)
- Operate scan tool according to manufacturer's instructions. Read and record scan tool self-diagnostic output (stored codes). See «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) DEFINITIONS»(ref-3130-S07902322592000041800000). To perform testing for retrieved codes, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION (SONATA)
CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
After testing and repairs have been completed, disconnect negative battery cable for at least 15 seconds to clear codes. A stored DTC will be cleared from ECM memory if the same malfunction is not detected for 40 drive cycles. On Sonata, fuel system rich/lean or misfire DTCs will be cleared when engine operating conditions are the same as when DTC was first detected and original malfunction is not detected during 80 drive cycles.
