SHIFT LOCK SYSTEM

Note. Sonata is equipped with a shift lock cable. Vehicle does not use electrical components.

The shift lock system prevents gearshift lever from being moved from Park unless brake pedal is depressed, ignition is on and release button on side of gearshift lever is depressed. On all models except Sonata, shift lock system consists of shift and key lock control module, shift lock solenoid, park position switch and brakelight switch. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . Shift and key lock control module controls operation of shift lock solenoid for gearshift lever operation. In case of a malfunction, gearshift lever can be released by depressing release button.

KEY LOCK SYSTEM

Note. Sonata is equipped with a key lock cable. Vehicle does not use electrical components.

The key lock system prevents ignition key from being turned to LOCK position unless gearshift lever is in Park. On all models except Sonata, key lock system consists of shift and key lock control module, key lock solenoid and key lock switch. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . Shift and key lock control module controls operation of key lock solenoid.

  1. To check system operation, turn ignition on. Depress release button on side of gearshift lever.
  2. With brake pedal released, gearshift lever should not move from Park. Depress brake pedal. With release button depressed, gearshift lever should now move from Park.
  3. If shift lock system operation is not as specified, check brakelight switch and shift lock solenoid. See «BRAKELIGHT SWITCH»(ref-121441-S33559644412001082700000) and «SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID»(ref-121441-S05351312012001082700000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If necessary, check wiring and ground connections. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-121441-S31659097362001082700000) .
  1. With gearshift lever in any gear except Park, ensure ignition key cannot be turned to LOCK position. Place gearshift lever in Park. Ensure ignition key can now be turned to LOCK position.
  2. If key lock system operation is not as specified, check key lock solenoid. See «KEY LOCK SOLENOID»(ref-121441-S05609866192001082700000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If necessary, check wiring and ground connections. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-121441-S31659097362001082700000) .

BRAKELIGHT SWITCH

  1. Disconnect brakelight switch connector. Using DVOM, check for continuity between brakelight switch terminals with brake pedal depressed. Continuity should be present. Release brake pedal. Continuity should not be present. If continuity is as specified, brakelight switch is okay. If continuity is not as specified, go to next step.
  2. Ensure brake pedal is properly adjusted so brakelight switch can obtain proper travel for switch operation. See «BRAKELIGHT SWITCH»(ref-121441-S14404810342001082700000) under ADJUSTMENTS. If adjustment is okay, replace brakelight switch.

KEY LOCK SOLENOID

  1. Disconnect key lock solenoid connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between key lock solenoid terminals. Replace key lock solenoid if resistance is not 12.5-16.5 ohms.
  2. To check key lock solenoid operation, connect battery voltage across key lock solenoid terminals. When battery voltage is applied, a "clicking" sound should be heard to indicate solenoid operation. Replace key lock solenoid if operation is not as specified.

PARK POSITION/KEY LOCK SWITCH

Disconnect park position and key lock switch connector(s). Using DVOM, check for continuity across terminals of each switch. Continuity should be present only when gearshift lever is in Park. Replace appropriate switch if continuity is not as specified.

SHIFT & KEY LOCK CONTROL MODULE

Check appropriate fuses located in instrument panel fuse box, at left kick panel. Ensure ground, battery positive and ignition positive feed circuits to module are okay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . No other information is available from manufacturer.

SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID

  1. Disconnect shift lock solenoid connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between shift lock solenoid terminals. Replace shift lock solenoid if resistance is not 12-16 ohms.
  2. To check shift lock solenoid operation, connect battery voltage across shift lock solenoid terminals. When battery voltage is applied, a "clicking" sound should be heard to indicate solenoid operation. Replace shift lock solenoid if operation is not as specified.

Loosen brakelight switch lock nut. Turn brakelight switch until clearance between brakelight switch outer case and brake pedal arm is .020-.039" (.50-1.00 mm). Tighten lock nut.

SHIFT LOCK CABLE & KEY LOCK CABLE (SONATA)

  1. Ensure shift lock cable is properly attached at brake pedal. Ensure key lock cable is properly attached to key cylinder. Temporarily install each cable to shifter assembly. Securely insert cable end into fixing pin of each cam. (Scheme 54)
  2. Maintain gap of.079-.157" (2.00-4.00 mm) between key lock cam and park lock cam to eliminate cable slack by pulling shift lock cable slightly forward away from gearshift lever.
  3. After ensuring a portion of cable end touches cable fixing pin of park lock cam, attach shift lock cable to shifter assembly with a nut, and attach shift lock cable end using washer and pin. (Scheme 54)
  4. Slightly push key lock cam forward away from gearshift lever, then slightly pull key lock cable rearward toward gearshift lever to stretch cable tight. Attach cable with nut. Ensure key lock cable is inserted into key lock cam fixing pin, then attach cable using washer and pin.
  5. Check shift lock system operation. See «SHIFT LOCK SYSTEM»(ref-121441-S19316947222001082700000) under SYSTEM TESTS. Check key lock system operation. See «KEY LOCK SYSTEM»(ref-121441-S18004998882001082700000) under SYSTEM TESTS. Ensure system is operating properly. If system is not operating properly, readjust shift lock and key lock cables.
