Steering System - Power Hyundai Excel I

Manual & Power Steering 4 illustrations ~942 words

DESCRIPTION

Power-assisted rack and pinion steering system consists of a vane pump, flow control valve and an oil reservoir. The belt-driven vane pump supplies fluid through hoses to the flow control valve. The flow control valve supplies fluid to the rack and pinion steering gear to turn the wheels. On the Galant, the rack and pinion steering is electronically controlled.

Scheme 1: FLUID PRESSURE TESTING
  1. Disconnect pressure hose from oil pump. (Scheme 1) Bleed air from system. Start engine and let it idle. Turn steering wheel several times until temperature reaches 122°F (50°C). Set engine idle speed to 1000 RPM. (Scheme 1): Pressure Gauge & Shut-Off Valve Connections
  2. Close and open valve to measure oil pump pressure. If not within specifications, replace pump. See «OIL PUMP PRESSURE SPECIFICATIONS»(/hyundai/excel/i-1985-1989/remont/manual-power-steering/#steering-system-power). Install pressure hose. Bleed system.
CAUTIONDO NOT leave valve on pressure gauge closed more than 10 seconds or damage to oil pump will result.

CAPACITY

Capacity for Excel is .85 qt. (.8L). See HYDRAULIC FLUID LEVEL CHECK in this article.

FLUID TYPE

Fluid type is DEXRON.

HYDRAULIC FLUID LEVEL CHECK

Start engine and let it idle. Turn steering wheel several times to bring steering fluid to normal operating temperature. Turn steering wheel left and right several times while checking fluid for foaming or clouding. Fluid level should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" mark on the dipstick attached to filler cap. Fill with Dexron to the "MAX" mark.

HYDRAULIC SYSTEM BLEEDING

  1. Disconnect coil high tension wire. Crank engine intermittently for 15-20 seconds while turning steering wheel left and right.
  2. Connect coil high tension wire. Start engine and let it idle. Turn steering wheel left and right until there are no air bubbles in the oil reservoir.
  3. Check fluid level and confirm that fluid is not milky. Turn steering wheel left and right and check to see that fluid level does not change.
  4. If fluid level changes more than .2" (5 mm) or if noise is heard from pump and control valve, fill with fluid to the "MAX" mark on dipstick.
  5. Repeat step 2) until air bubbles are no longer present in fluid and fluid level ceases to fluctuate more than .2" (5 mm).
CAUTIONDo not hold steering wheel to left or right for more than 10 seconds.

PINION PRELOAD

Using Adaptor (MB990228-01 ) and torque wrench, measure preload while turning pinion gear through one rotation. If preload is not 5-11 INCH lbs. (5-11 N.m), adjust rack support cover. Check preload again. Tighten lock nut.

Removal

Disconnect pressure and suction hoses from pump. Drain fluid into container. On turbocharged models, remove heat insulator. On all models, remove oil pump mounting bolts, belt and oil pump. Remove reservoir retaining bolts. Remove reservoir.

Installation

To install, reverse removal procedure. Fill and bleed system.

Removal (Excel)

  1. Raise and support front of vehicle. Remove coupling bolt from pinion shaft joint. Disconnect hydraulic lines from steering gear. Drain fluid.
  2. Remove tie rod end cotter pins and castle nuts. Using Puller (MB-991113 ), separate tie rod ends from steering knuckles. Remove stabilizer bar mounting bolts.
  3. Remove stabilizer bar. Remove steering gear-to-crossmember mounting bolts. Remove steering gear from left side of vehicle.

Disassembly

  1. Remove oil pump cover, cam ring, "O" rings and vanes from rotor. Remove snap ring from pulley assembly. Remove rotor.
  2. To remove pulley assembly from pump body, tap with plastic hammer. Remove suction connector and oil seal from pump body. Remove connector, flow control valve and spring from pump body.

Inspection & Reassembly

  1. Check pulley assembly, cam ring, rotor and vanes for wear. Check pump cover and pump body for abrasion. Check flow control valve for clogging.
  2. Apply ATF (Dexron) fluid to "O" rings and vanes. Reassemble in reverse order of disassembly. Install oil seal into pump body with Installers (MB990925-01 ) and (MB990938-01 ). Install vanes into rotor in right direction. (Scheme 3)

Disassembly (Excel)

  1. With rack and pinion assembly mounted in soft-jawed vise, remove tie rod ends, boot clamps and rubber boots. Using a chisel, remove tie rod tab washer. Remove tie rod assemblies.
  2. Remove adjusting plug lock nut. Using Socket (MB990607-A ), remove adjusting plug. Remove plunger spring, rubber cushion and support yoke.
  3. Remove snap ring, oil seals and pinion/valve assembly. Turn rack stopper clockwise to align circlip with slot in gear housing for removal.
  4. When circlip comes out of housing, turn rack stopper counterclockwise to remove circlip. Remove rack stopper, rack bushing and rack from gear housing.
  5. Remove "O" ring and oil seal from rack bushing. Use brass drift to remove ball bearing, needle bearing, and oil seal from pinion side of gear housing.
  6. Use pipe to remove back washer and oil seal from rear of rack housing. Using a screwdriver, remove resin ring from pinion valve assembly.

Inspection

Check bearings, rack bushing and rack teeth for damage and wear. On all models, replace all oil seals and "O" rings.

Reassembly (Excel)

  1. Apply ATF (Dexron) fluid to all "O" rings. Use multipurpose grease to lubricate rack teeth, bearings and teeth on pinion valve assembly. Reassemble in reverse order of disassembly.
  2. Using Drivers (MB991097 and MB9901098 ), install back-up washer and oil seal in gear housing. Using Drivers (MB991100 and MB991102 ), install needle bearing in gear housing.
  3. Using Socket (MB990607-A ), install adjusting plug. Install plunger spring, rubber cushion and support yoke. Install adjusting plug lock nut.
  4. Using Driver (MB99100 ), install pinion oil seal in gear housing. Using Drivers (C-4637-1 and MB990927 ), install "O" ring into rack bushing. Adjust pinion preload. Refer to «ADJUSTMENTS»(/hyundai/excel/i-1985-1989/remont/manual-power-steering/#steering-system-power) in this article.
