ENGINE MECHANICAL
Before performing any on-vehicle adjustments to fuel or ignition systems, ensure engine mechanical condition is okay.
VALVE CLEARANCE
Note. All models are equipped with hydraulic lash adjusters. No adjustments are required.
IGNITION TIMING
- Ensure vehicle is at normal operating temperature, all accessories are off and transmission is in Park or Neutral. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position and curb idle speed is set to specification. See «IDLE SPEED»(/hyundai/elantra/ii-1995-1998/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments__idle-speed) .
- Ground ignition timing adjustment connector. See IGNITION TIMING ADJUSTMENT CONNECTOR LOCATION table. Check ignition basic timing. See IGNITION TIMING table. Disconnect ground wire on ignition timing adjustment connector. Check ignition actual timing.
- If timing is incorrect, loosen Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor hold-down nut. Ignition timing will advance if CKP sensor is turned clockwise and retard if turned counterclockwise. After adjustment, tighten hold-down nut. Ensure CKP sensor does not move when tightening hold-down nut.

IGNITION TIMING (Degrees BTDC @ RPM)
IDLE SPEED
- Ensure coolant temperature is 176-203°F (80-95°C). Turn all accessories off. DO NOT check curb idle speed while cooling fan is operating. On vehicles equipped with power steering, ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position.
- Connect scan tool to DLC, locate on coin box. Operate engine at curb idle speed and then operate engine for at least 5 seconds at 2000-3000 RPM.
- Run engine at idle for 2 minutes. Check idle RPM. See IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS table. If RPM is not within specification, go to next step. NOTE: DO NOT adjust throttle valve Speed Adjusting Screw (SAS). SAS is pre-adjusted at factory. Idle is controlled by Idle Speed Control (ISC) motor.
- Ensure timing is set to specification. Check throttle body for cracks, restriction in vacuum port or passages, or binding accelerator cable. Also, check input and output value of relevant sensors. IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS

IDLE SWITCH (FIXED SAS)
Note. Idle switch is adjusted at factory. Adjustment is not required unless idle switch has been replaced or fixed SAS has been moved from factory adjustment mark.
IDLE MIXTURE
Note. Mixture adjustment is computer-controlled and is not adjustable.
THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR
Note. For further TP sensor diagnosis, see SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS article or TESTS W/CODES article below.

- Turn ignition off. Disconnect TP sensor harness connector. Using a DVOM, check resistance between TP sensor terminals No. 2 (ground) and No. 3 (power). (Scheme 2) Resistance should be 700-3000 ohms. If resistance is not as specified, replace TP sensor. If resistance is as specified, go to next step.
- Connect DVOM between TP sensor terminals No. 1 (output) and No. 3 (ground). Open throttle slowly from idle to wide-open throttle position. Resistance should change smoothly in proportion to the throttle valve opening. If resistance does not change smoothly, replace TP sensor.
