DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

The collapsible steering system consists of an upper and lower shaft joined by a collapsible (bellows type) section. The bellows section compresses under impact, without affecting turning motion.

Removal

  1. On Excel and Scoupe, push in and turn horn pad counterclockwise, and then lift pad off. Remove upper and lower horn contact plates, and disconnect horn button connector. On Elantra and Sonata, remove horn pad by removing screws on back side of steering wheel, and disconnect horn contact wires.
  2. On all models, remove lock nut and washer. Make alignment mark on steering shaft and steering wheel for installation reference. Install steering wheel puller and pull steering wheel from shaft.

Installation

To install, align reference mark on steering shaft and steering wheel. Reverse removal procedure to complete installation.

Removal & Installation (Elantra & Sonata)
