Alternator & Regulator Hyundai Elantra I

Charging System 5 illustrations ~697 words

DESCRIPTION

Mitsubishi alternators are conventional 3-phase, self-rectifying type units containing 6 diodes (3 positive and 3 negative), used to rectify current. All models utilize an Integrated Circuit (IC) regulator.

ON-VEHICLE TESTING

Note. Check alternator wiring harness connections and drive belt tension. Ensure battery is fully charged before beginning test. Wait at least 30 seconds after starting engine before measuring voltage.

ALTERNATOR OUTPUT TEST

  1. Using a voltmeter, ensure battery voltage is present at terminal "B" of alternator. If battery voltage is not present, circuit from battery to alternator terminal "B" is open. Repair as required.
  2. If battery voltage is present at terminal "B", connect an ammeter inductive pick-up around alternator's terminal "B" wire. Start engine, quickly turn lights and heater blower motor on high and run engine to 2500 RPM. Observe ammeter reading. See «ALTERNATOR OUTPUT SPECIFICATIONS»(/hyundai/elantra/i-1990-1995/remont/charging-system/#alternator-regulator) table. If alternator output is not within specification, remove and bench test alternator.

REGULATED VOLTAGE TEST

  1. Connect voltmeter and ammeter to alternator. (Scheme 1)or (Scheme 2). Turn ignition on, engine off. If voltmeter reads zero volts, there is an open in circuit to terminal "S". Locate and repair.
  2. Start engine. With all lights and accessories off, run engine at about 2500 RPM. When alternator output current drops to 10 amps (ammeter reading), ensure voltmeter reading is as specified. See «REGULATOR VOLTAGE SPECIFICATIONS»(/hyundai/elantra/i-1990-1995/remont/charging-system/#alternator-regulator) table. If voltage is not within specifications, test alternator and related wiring. If alternator and related wiring are okay, replace regulator.

BRUSHES

  1. Replace brushes if worn to limit line. (Scheme 3) Replace all brush springs if any springs are damaged or corroded.
  2. To remove brushes from holder, unsolder pigtail from terminal. To replace, install brush and spring so that brush projects.079-.118"(2-3 mm) from brush holder. Solder pigtail to terminal.

DIODE ASSEMBLY

  1. Check each diode with ohmmeter in both directions. If diodes show large resistance in one direction and no resistance in the other direction, diodes are normal. (Scheme 4)
  2. If diode shows small resistance in both directions, diode is shorted. If large resistance is shown in both directions, diode is open. If any diode is defective, replace complete rectifier assembly.

ROTOR

Check resistance across rotor slip rings. Reading should be 3.1 ohms. If there is no continuity, replace rotor. Check continuity between each slip ring and rotor core/shaft (ground). If continuity exists, rotor coil or slip ring is grounded. Replace rotor assembly as necessary.

STATOR

Ensure continuity exists between all leads of stator coil. If continuity does not exist between all leads, replace stator. Ensure that continuity does not exist between any stator coil lead and stator core. If there is continuity, replace stator.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

Note. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - BASIC PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL TROUBLE SHOOTING section.

Removal & Installation (Elantra & Sonata 4-Cylinder)

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove radiator mount bolts. Disconnect coolant reservoir hose and fan motor connectors. Raise and support vehicle. Remove left side undercover. Disconnect oil pressure switch connector. Loosen alternator bolts and remove belt. Disconnect alternator "B" terminal. Remove alternator while lifting radiator as necessary for clearance. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten pivot bolt to 15-18 ft. lbs. (20-25 N.m), and tighten adjusting bolt to 9-11 ft. lbs. (12-15 N.m).

Removal & Installation (Excel & Scoupe)

Disconnect negative battery cable. Loosen belt tension and remove belt. Raise and support vehicle. Remove left side mud guard. Disconnect alternator battery "B+" terminal wire. Remove pivot bolt and remove alternator. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten pivot bolt to 15-18 ft. lbs. (20-25 N.m), and tighten adjusting bolt to 9-11 ft. lbs. (12-15 N.m).

Removal & Installation (Sonata V6)

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove distributor cap and power steering hose nut. Loosen belt tensioner and remove belt. Remove timing belt right side cover cap, and remove timing belt right side upper cover. Remove alternator. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten pivot bolt to 15-18 ft. lbs. (20-25 N.m), and tighten adjusting bolt to 11-16 ft. lbs.(15-22 N.m).
