HARD TO START OR WILL NOT START

Check Engine Cranking

  1. Check battery and charging system.
  2. Check power and ground circuits.
  3. Check fusible links.
  4. Ensure starter is operating properly.
  5. Check ECM control relay.
  6. Check ECM fuse.
  7. Check ignition switch.
  8. Ensure engine is not seized.

Check Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Operation

  1. Ensure CKP sensor is operating properly.
  2. Ensure CKP sensor air gap is correct.
  3. Ensure CKP sensor trigger wheel has no broken or missing teeth.
  4. Ensure CKP sensor trigger wheel is installed properly.

Check Ignition Spark

  1. Check power and ground circuits for ignition coils.
  2. Ensure ignition coils are operating properly.
  3. Ensure spark plug gap is correct and plugs are not fouled.
  4. Check spark plug cables.

Check Fuel Supply

  1. Ensure fuel pump is operating properly.
  2. Ensure fuel pressure is correct.
  3. Ensure fuel pressure regulator is operating properly.
  4. Check fuel lines for leaks and/or deformations.
  5. Ensure fuel injectors are operating properly.
  6. Ensure there is enough fuel.
  7. Check for contaminated fuel.
  8. Check for restricted fuel filter.

Check ECM Harness Connectors

  1. Check ECM power and ground circuits.
  2. Check sensor power, ground and signal circuits.
  3. Ensure ECM control relay is operating properly.

Check Sensors

  1. Check Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.
  2. Check Manifold Absolute Pressure/Intake Air Temperature (MAP/IAT) sensor.
  3. Check Throttle Position (TP) sensor.
  4. Check Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor.
  5. Check fuel injector signal circuit.

Check Ignition Timing

  1. Ensure ignition timing is correct.

Check For Vacuum Leaks

  1. Ensure oil filler cap and dipstick seals are tight.
  2. Ensure PCV hose does not leak and is not kinked.
  3. Ensure vacuum hose connections and associated components are not leaking.
  4. Ensure EVAP canister Purge Control Solenoid Valve (PCSV) is operating properly.
  5. Ensure EGR valve is closed (if equipped).

If no other problems are found, replace ECM and recheck.

ROUGH IDLE OR ENGINE STALLS

Check Fuel Level

  1. Ensure fuel octane level is at least 87.
  2. Check for contaminated fuel.
  3. Check for restricted fuel filter.

Check ECM Harness Connectors

  1. Check ECM power and ground circuits.
  2. Check sensor power, ground and signal circuits.
  3. Ensure ECM control relay is operating properly.

Check Ignition Spark

  1. Check power and ground circuits for ignition coils.
  2. Ensure ignition coils are operating properly.
  3. Ensure spark plug gap is correct and plugs are not fouled.
  4. Check spark plug cables.

Check Fuel Supply

  1. Check for a dirty or clogged air filter.
  2. Check for contaminated fuel.
  3. Ensure there is enough fuel.
  4. Check for restricted fuel filter.
  5. Ensure fuel pump is operating properly.
  6. Ensure fuel pressure is correct.
  7. Ensure fuel pressure regulator is operating properly.
  8. Check fuel lines for leaks and/or deformations.
  9. Ensure fuel injectors are operating properly.

Check Sensors

  1. Check Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.
  2. Check Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor.
  3. Check Throttle Position (TP) sensor.
  4. Check upstream HO2S.

Check Engine Idle Speed

  1. Ensure engine idle speed is correct.
  2. Ensure engine idle speed actuator is operating properly.
  3. Ensure ignition timing is correct.

Check For Air Leaks

  1. Check vacuum and purge hoses, connections and related components.
  2. Check intake manifold and throttle body.
  3. Ensure PCV is operating properly.
  4. Ensure EVAP canister Purge Control Solenoid Valve (PCSV) is operating properly.
  5. Ensure EGR valve is closing fully (if equipped).

Check Camshaft & Crankshaft Timing Marks

  1. Ensure timing belt is installed correctly.

If no other problems are found, replace ECM and recheck.

ENGINE HESITATES OR ACCELERATES POORLY

Check Clutch Operation Or Brakes

  1. Ensure parking brake does not drag when released.
  2. Ensure service brakes do not drag when released.
  3. Check for clutch-slip and adjust as necessary.

Check Sensors

  1. Check upstream HO2S.
  2. Check Throttle Position (TP) sensor.
  3. Check Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.
  4. Check Manifold Absolute Pressure/Intake Air Temperature (MAP/IAT) sensor.
  5. Check Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor.
  6. Check Knock Sensor (KS).

Check For Air Leaks

  1. Check vacuum and purge hoses, connections and related components.
  2. Check intake manifold and throttle body.
  3. Check for leaks in exhaust system.

Check Fuel Supply

  1. Check for a dirty or clogged air filter.
  2. Check for contaminated fuel.
  3. Ensure there is enough fuel.
  4. Check for restricted fuel filter.
  5. Ensure fuel pump is operating properly.
  6. Ensure fuel pressure is correct.
  7. Ensure fuel pressure regulator is operating properly.
  8. Check fuel lines for leaks and/or deformations.
  9. Ensure fuel injectors are operating properly.

Check ECM Harness Connectors

  2. Check sensor power, ground and signal circuits.
  3. Ensure ECM control relay is operating properly.

Check Engine Idle Speed

  1. Ensure engine idle speed is correct.
  2. Ensure engine idle speed actuator is operating properly.
  3. Ensure ignition timing is correct.

If no other problems are found, replace ECM and recheck.

HARD TO REFUEL/OVERFLOWING OR SPIT-BACK WHILE REFUELING

Hard To Refuel

  1. Ensure fill vent valve hose is not twisted or clogged.
  2. Check for contamination of EVAP canister filter.

Overflowing Or Spit-Back While Refueling

  1. Ensure fuel shut-off valve is operating properly.

Intermittent Simulation

To reproduce conditions creating intermittent fault, use the following methods

  1. Lightly vibrate component.
  2. Heat component.
  3. Wiggle or bend wiring harness.
  4. Spray component with water.
  5. Remove/apply vacuum source.

Monitor circuit/component voltage or resistance while simulating intermittent. If engine is operating, monitor for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Use test results to identify a faulty component or circuit.
