Removal Procedure

  1. Open the spare tire carrier in order to access the rear tow eye bolts/nuts.
  2. If replacing the hinge side, remove the spare tire carrier. Refer to «Spare Tire Carrier Replacement»(ref-299138-S34146713042008092200000) .
  3. Remove the nut from the tow eye bolt.
  4. Remove the bolts holding the rear tow eyes (2, 3) to either the latch or hinge side of the spare tire carrier frame.
  5. Remove the tow eyes.

Installation Procedure

  1. Position the tow eye to either the latch (2) or hinge side (3) of the spare tire carrier.
  2. Install the bolt.
  3. Install the nut. Tighten: Tighten the nut to 85 N.m (63 lb ft).
  4. If replacing the hinge side, install the spare tire carrier. Refer to «Spare Tire Carrier Replacement»(ref-299138-S34146713042008092200000) .
  5. Secure the spare tire carrier to the rear bumper latch.
  1. Remove the D-Ring mounting bolts.
  2. Remove the D-Ring.
  1. Install the D-Rings to the vehicle.
  2. Install the D-Ring mounting bolts. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 85 N.m (63 lb ft).
  1. Remove the front bumper. Refer to «Front Bumper Replacement»(ref-299133-S11434348712008092200000) .
  2. Remove the tow hook bolts from the frame rail.
  3. Remove the tow hook from the vehicle.
  1. Install the tow hook to the frame rail.
  2. Install the bolts to the tow hook through the frame rail. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 95 N.m (70 lb ft).
  3. Install the front bumper. Refer to «Front Bumper Replacement»(ref-299133-S11434348712008092200000) .
  1. Remove the bumper. Refer to «Front Bumper Replacement»(ref-299133-S11434348712008092200000) .
  2. Remove the winch receiver bolts from the frame.
  3. Remove the winch receiver from the vehicle.
  1. Install the winch receiver to the vehicle.
  2. Install the receiver bolts to the frame. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 85 N.m (63 lb ft).
  3. Install the bumper. Refer to «Front Bumper Replacement»(ref-299133-S11434348712008092200000) .

Scheme 1: Engine Protection Shield Replacement

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-299137-S12533882312008092200000) .
  2. Remove the outer tank shield mounting nuts.
  3. Remove the inner fuel tank shield mounting nuts.
  4. With help of an assistant, remove the fuel tank shield from the vehicle.
  1. With the help for an assistant, position the fuel tank shield on the fuel tank.
  2. Hand tighten inner fuel tank shield mounting nut.
  3. Hand tighten the outer fuel tank shield mounting nut.
  4. Tighten the fuel tank shield nuts.
  5. Tighten: Tighten the 6 mm nuts to 9 N.m (80 lb in). Tighten the 8 mm nuts to 18 N.m (13 lb ft). Tighten the fuel tank shield bolt to 25 N.m (18 lb ft). Lower the vehicle.
  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-299137-S12533882312008092200000) .
  2. Remove the underbody shields. Refer to «Catalytic Converter Guard Replacement»(ref-299135-S11039751972008092200000) .
  3. Support the front differential.
  4. Remove the differential mounting nut, bolt, and washer. Refer to «Differential Carrier Assembly Replacement»(ref-299141-S24439692872008092200000) .
  5. Remove the crossmember mounting bolts.
  6. Remove the crossmember from the vehicle.
  1. Install the crossmember to the vehicle.
  2. Perform the following procedure before installing the bolts. Remove all traces of the original adhesive patch. Clean the threads of the bolt with denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry. Apply Threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488).
  3. Install the bolts and the nuts. Tighten: Tighten the nuts to 90 N.m (66 lb ft).
  4. Remove the differential support.
  5. Install the differential mounting nut, bolt, and washer. Refer to «Differential Carrier Assembly Replacement»(ref-299141-S24439692872008092200000) .
  6. Install the underbody shields. Refer to «Catalytic Converter Guard Replacement»(ref-299135-S11039751972008092200000) .
  7. Lower the vehicle.

Support the frame with the hoist when you change the body mounts. If only one mount is changed loosen and lower the entire side on which the mount in question is being replaced.

  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-299137-S12533882312008092200000) .
  2. Using jack stands or the equivalent to support the body where the mounts will be replaced.
  3. Remove the body mount bolt, retainer, and lower cushion at the radiator support.
  4. Remove the body mount bolt, retainers, and lower cushions at the front mount location.
  5. Remove the body mount bolt, retainers, and lower cushions at the three other mount locations.
  6. Remove the body mount bolt, retainers, and lower cushion at the rear most mount.
  7. Disconnect or remove any wiring harness or component that may interfere with the lowering of the frame.
  8. Lower the hoist in order to leave the body supported by the jack stands.
  9. Remove the upper cushions and the shims from the vehicle.
  1. Install the upper cushions and the shims to the vehicle.
  2. Raise the hoist to allow the body mount bolts to be installed.
  3. Connect or install any wiring harness or component that was removed to allow for the lowering of the frame.
  4. Install the body mount bolt, retainer, and lower cushion at the rear most mount.
  5. Install the body mount bolt, retainers, and lower cushions at the three other mount locations.
  6. Remove the body mount bolt, retainers, and lower cushions at the front mount location.
  7. Install the body mount bolt, retainer, and lower cushion at the radiator support. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 85 N.m (63 lb ft).
  8. Remove the jack stands.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  1. Remove the wheel. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-299138-S29700074212008092200000) .
  2. Remove push-in retainers (1).
  3. Remove the wheelhouse panel.
  1. Align the wheelhouse panel to the wheelhouse.
  2. Install push-in retainers (1).
  3. Install the wheel. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-299138-S29700074212008092200000) .

Scheme 2: Assist Step Replacement (w/WS2, BVX)

2Front Assist Step Procedure Position the ears of the assist step between the rocker protector and the rocker molding. Insert the bolts through the flanges of the rocker protector and into the ears on the assist step. Install the inboard bolts first and finger tighten. Install the outboard bolts last and finger tighten. Tighten all the bolts to the above specified torque value.
3Assist Step Bolt (Qty: 4) Tighten: 85 N.m (63 lb ft)
4Rear Assist Step Procedure Position the ears of the assist step between the rocker protector and the rocker molding. Insert the bolts through the flanges of the rocker protector and into the ears on the assist step. Install the inboard bolts first and finger tighten. Install the outboard bolts last and finger tighten. Tighten all the bolts to the above specified torque value.
NOTE
Refer to Fastener Notice .
  1. Remove the nuts and the bolts.
  2. Remove the assist step from the vehicle.
  1. Perform the following procedure before installing the bolts. Remove all traces of the original adhesive patch. Clean the threads of the bolt with denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry. Apply Threadlocker GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489).
  2. Install the assist step to the vehicle. An assistant may be necessary for this step.
  3. Install the nuts and the bolts. Tighten: Tighten the nuts to 50 N.m (39 lb ft).
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-299137-S12533882312008092200000) .
  2. Remove the assist step if equipped. Refer to «Assist Step Replacement (w/WS2, BVX)»(ref-299135-S18096453502008092200000) or «Assist Step Replacement (Tubular BVE)»(ref-299135-S20242574652008092200000) .
  3. Remove the EVAP canister vent valve bracket. Refer to «Evaporative Emission Canister Vent Solenoid Valve Replacement»(ref-299142-S20311613522008092200000) .
  4. Remove the mounting bolts.
  5. Remove the rocker panel protector from the vehicle.
  1. Install the rocker panel protector to the vehicle.
  2. Loosely install all of the mounting bolts. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 85 N.m (63 lb ft).
  3. Install the EVAP canister vent valve bracket. Refer to «Evaporative Emission Canister Vent Solenoid Valve Replacement»(ref-299142-S20311613522008092200000) .
  4. Install the assist step if equipped. Refer to «Assist Step Replacement (w/WS2, BVX)»(ref-299135-S18096453502008092200000) or «Assist Step Replacement (Tubular BVE)»(ref-299135-S20242574652008092200000) .
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-299137-S12533882312008092200000) .
  2. Remove the catalytic converter guard. Refer to «Catalytic Converter Guard Replacement»(ref-299135-S11039751972008092200000) .
  3. Remove the transfer case shield. Refer to «Transfer Case Shield Replacement»(ref-299143-S37688451282008092200000) .
  4. Support the transmission with a suitable stand or jack.
  5. Remove the nuts retaining the transmission mount to the transmission support.
  6. Raise the transmission.
  7. Remove the bolts and the nuts retaining the transmission support to the frame.
  8. Remove the transmission support from the frame.
  1. Install the transmission support to the frame.
  2. Install the bolts and the nuts in order to retain the transmission support to the frame. Tighten: Tighten the nuts to 95 N.m (70 lb ft).
  3. Lower the transmission.
  4. Align the transmission mount with the transmission support.
  5. Install the nuts to the transmission mount. Tighten: Tighten the nuts to 40 N.m (30 lb ft).
  6. Remove the stand or jack.
  7. Install the transfer case shield. Refer to «Transfer Case Shield Replacement»(ref-299143-S37688451282008092200000) .
  8. Install the catalytic converter guard. Refer to «Catalytic Converter Guard Replacement»(ref-299135-S11039751972008092200000) .
  9. Lower the vehicle.

Scheme 3: Catalytic Converter Guard Replacement

  1. Remove the rear bumper. Refer to «Rear Bumper Replacement (SUT)»(ref-299133-S21039010742008092200000) or «Rear Bumper Replacement (SUV)»(ref-299133-S06372712862008092200000) .
  2. Remove the bolts (4) from the trailer hitch to frame (5).
  3. Remove the 2 bolts (1) from the rear edge of the air suspension compressor bracket (2).
  4. Disconnect the electrical harness conduit from the inside of the trailer hitch.
  5. With the aid of an assistant, remove the trailer hitch from the frame rail.
  1. Position the trailer hitch to the rear frame rail.
  2. Install the 2 forward bolts. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 85 N.m (63 lb ft).
  3. Install the 2 bolts (1) to the rear edge of the air suspension compressor bracket (2). Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 85 N.m (63 lb ft).
  4. Secure the electrical harness conduit to the inner surface of the trailer hitch.
  5. Install the rear bumper. Refer to «Rear Bumper Replacement (SUT)»(ref-299133-S21039010742008092200000) or «Rear Bumper Replacement (SUV)»(ref-299133-S06372712862008092200000) .
  1. Remove the bumper. Refer to «Rear Bumper Replacement (SUT)»(ref-299133-S21039010742008092200000) or «Rear Bumper Replacement (SUV)»(ref-299133-S06372712862008092200000) .
  2. Remove any electrical or air suspension components from the hitch.
  3. Remove the hitch bolts from the frame.
  4. Remove the hitch from the vehicle.
  1. Install the hitch to the vehicle.
  2. Install the hitch bolts to the frame. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 100 N.m (74 lb ft).
  3. Install the electrical or air suspension components to the hitch.
  4. Install the bumper. Refer to «Rear Bumper Replacement (SUT)»(ref-299133-S21039010742008092200000) or «Rear Bumper Replacement (SUV)»(ref-299133-S06372712862008092200000) .
