Engine ID and VIN Derivative Location
The eighth character in the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) identifies the engine. Adhesive-backed labels attached to the engine, laser etching or stampings on the engine block indicate the engine unit number/date code. All engines are stamped with a VIN derivative.

Transmission ID and VIN Derivative Location
A Transmission ID Tag and a VIN Derivation stamp is located on the transmission case.

An identification tag is attached to the front half of the transfer case. The tag provides the following information
- Model number (1)
- Manufacturer (2)
- Part Number (3)
- Serial Number (4)
The information on this tag is necessary for servicing the transfer case. If the tag is removed or becomes dislodged during service operations, keep the identification tag with the unit.

Front axle identification information is stamped on the top of the differential carrier assembly. The information includes the following
- Broadcast code (1)
- Supplier code (2)
- Date built (3)
- Shift built (4) - Optional for 8.25 and 9.25 inch axles
- Hour built (5)
In order to verify reports made on the differential case assembly, include full code letters and build date numbers.
Scheme 6
Rear axle identification information is stamped on the right side axle tube near the differential housing. The information includes the following
- Broadcast code (1)
- Build Source (2)
- Build date (3) - Julian date
- Shift built (4)
In order to verify reports made on the rear axle assembly, include full code letters and build date numbers.
Scheme 7
Federal law requires that General Motors label certain body parts on this vehicle with the vehicle identification number (VIN). The purpose of the law is to reduce the number of motor vehicle thefts by helping in the tracing and the recovery of parts from stolen vehicles.
The labels are permanently affixed to an interior surface of the part. The label on a replacement part contains the letter R, the manufacturer's logo, and the DOT symbol.

The service parts identification label is placed on the vehicle in order to help the service and parts personnel identify the vehicle's original parts and the vehicle's original options. The service parts identification label is located in the instrument panel (I/P) compartment.
