Symptom Troubleshooting Index
| Symptom | Diagnostic procedure | Also check for |
|---|---|---|
| Excessive engine oil consumption | Check the loose of the engine oil fill cap, oil drain bolt, and oil filter. Check for oil leaks. Check for worn valve guide(s) (see VALVE STEM-TO-GUIDE CLEARANCE INSPECTION ) or worn valve stem seal(s) (see VALVE STEM-TO-GUIDE CLEARANCE INSPECTION ). Check for damaged or worn piston ring(s) (see PISTON RING REPLACEMENT ). Check for damaged or worn engine internal parts (cylinder wall, pistons, etc.). | |
| Low oil pressure indicator does not come on with the ignition switch ON (II) | 2006-09 model: Do the gauge assembly self-diagnostic function (see SELF-DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTION ). Test the oil pressure switch (see OIL PRESSURE SWITCH TEST ). | An open in the wire between the gauge assembly and the oil pressure switch |
| Low oil pressure indicator stays on | Check the engine oil level. 2006-09 model: Do the gauge assembly self-diagnostic function (see SELF-DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTION ). Test the oil pressure switch (see OIL PRESSURE SWITCH TEST ) Check the engine oil pressure (see OIL PRESSURE TEST ). Check the oil filter for clogging. Check the oil screen for clogging. Check the relief valve. Check the oil pump (see INSPECTION ). | A wire shorted to ground between the gauge assembly and the oil pressure switch |
COMPONENT LOCATION INDEX
Scheme 3
- Remove the wire (A) from the engine oil pressure switch (B).
- Check for continuity between the positive terminal (C) and the engine (ground). There should be continuity with the engine stopped. There should be no continuity with the engine running.
- If the switch fails to operate, check the engine oil level. If the engine oil level is OK, check the engine oil pressure (see «OIL PRESSURE TEST»(ref-221324-S41879893542006022400000) ).
Scheme 4
- Remove the wire from the oil pressure switch, then remove the oil pressure switch.
- Remove any old liquid gasket from the switch and switch mounting hole.
- Apply a very small amount of liquid gasket to the oil pressure switch threads, then install the oil pressure switch. NOTE: Using too much liquid gasket may cause liquid gasket to enter the oil passage or the end of the new oil pressure switch.
Oil Pressure Test
If the oil pressure indicator stays on with the engine running, check the engine oil level. If the oil level is correct
Scheme 5
- Remove the engine oil pressure switch, and install an oil pressure gauge (A).
- Start the engine. Shut it off immediately if the gauge registers no oil pressure. Repair the problem before continuing.
- Allow the engine to reach operating temperature (fan comes on at least twice). The pressure should be: Engine Oil Temperature: 176 °F (80 °C) Engine Oil Pressure: At Idle: 250 kPa (2.5 kgf/cm 2 , 36 psi) min. At 3,000 RPM: 590 kPa (6.0 kgf/cm 2 , 85 psi) min.
- If oil pressure is out of specifications, inspect these items: Inspect the oil pressure relief valve (see «OIL PUMP OVERHAUL»(ref-221324-S39983886362006022400000) ). Check the oil filter for clogging. Inspect the oil pump (see «INSPECTION»(ref-221324-S19059778942006022400000) ).
Scheme 6
- Warm up the engine.
- Remove the drain bolt (A), and drain the engine oil.
- Reinstall the drain bolt with a new washer (B).
- Refill with the recommended oil. Capacity At Oil Change: 4.5 L (4.8 US qt) At Oil Change including Filter: 4.8 L (5.1 US qt) After Engine Overhaul: 5.6 L (5.9 US qt)
- Run the engine for more than 3 minutes, then check for oil leakage.
- 2006-09 model: Reset the information display.
