DESCRIPTION

The cranking leak system is used on all Honda carbureted vehicles. The cranking leak solenoid is energized from the ignition switch start circuit. When the solenoid is energized, partial vacuum is applied to the choke opener. When the solenoid is de-energized full manifold vacuum is applied to the choke opener.

OPERATION

The cranking leak system bleeds vacuum from the choke opener during cranking. During cold engine starts and when engine is running, the cranking leak solenoid is de-energized. When cranking leak system is de-energized, solenoid is closed and manifold vacuum opens the choke valve a fixed amount. The fixed amount is determined by the balance of manifold vacuum and choke opener spring tension.

During warm engine starts, while engine is being cranked, the cranking leak solenoid is energized so that the choke remains in its partially closed position. When the engine is started and ignition switch is returned to the "RUN" position, the cranking leak solenoid is de-energized, allowing thermovalve to close. As thermovalve closes, full manifold vacuum is applied to the choke opener.

Scheme 12: SYSTEM TESTING
  1. Disconnect vacuum hose No. 20 at metal tubing manifold. With ignition off, apply vacuum to hose using vacuum pump. Vacuum should hold steady.
  2. If vacuum does not hold steady, check for voltage at cranking leak solenoid valve. If there is no voltage, replace cranking leak solenoid valve and retest. If voltage is present, go to next step.
  3. With vacuum pump still attached and showing steady vacuum, turn ignition switch to "START" position. Vacuum should bleed off.
  4. If vacuum remains steady, check for voltage at cranking leak solenoid valve, with ignition switch in "START" position.
  5. Voltage should not be present. If voltage is present, replace cranking leak solenoid valve.
