Note. Put on gloves to protect your hands. Use the appropriate tool from the KTC trim tool set to avoid damage when removing components.

- With power tailgate: Do the battery terminal disconnection procedure (see «BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION AND RECONNECTION»(ref-333608-S13381695222009072100000) ), then wait at least 3 minutes before beginning work. NOTE: While adjusting the tailgate, use the emergency lever to release the tailgate latch. Without power tailgate (see «TAILGATE LATCH REPLACEMENT»(ref-333595-S18397485962009072100000) ) With power tailgate (see «WITH POWER TAILGATE»(ref-333595-S02975082142009072100000) )
- Remove the support strut from each side (see «TAILGATE SUPPORT STRUT REPLACEMENT»(/honda/pilot/ii-2008-2011/remont/exterior-body-panels/#tailgate) ).
- Remove the tailgate hinge cover (see «TAILGATE HINGE COVER REPLACEMENT»(ref-333593-S02892657622009072100000) ).
- Remove the striker cap (A) from the rear trim panel (B).
- Slightly loosen each bolt (A).
- Adjust the tailgate (B) alignment in the following sequence: Adjust the tailgate right and left, using the elongated holes in the tailgate hinges (C). Turn the tailgate edge cushions (D), in or out as necessary, to make the tailgate fit flush with the body at the side edges. Adjust the fit between the tailgate and tailgate opening by moving the striker (E), and adjust the striker right or left until it is centered in the tailgate latch (F).
- Tighten each bolt securely.
- Check that the tailgate opens properly and locks securely.
- Reinstall the support struts securely.
- Apply touch-up paint to the hinge mounting bolts and around the hinges, and let the paint dry.
- Apply multipurpose grease to the pivot portion of the tailgate hinges (A) as indicated by the arrows.
- Reinstall all of the removed parts.
- With power tailgate: Do the battery terminal reconnection procedure (see «BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION AND RECONNECTION»(ref-333608-S13381695222009072100000) ).
Note. Check for any DTCs that may have been set during repairs, and clear them.
Note. Use eye protection when prying the support strut clips. Have an assistant hold the tailgate up while you replace the support struts. When prying with a flat-tip screwdriver, wrap it with protective tape to prevent damage.
Scheme 116
- With the help of an assistant, use a flat-tip screwdriver (A) to pry the support strut clips (B) from each end of the support strut (C) at the tailgate and body, then release the support strut from the pivot bolt (D). Do not remove the clips from the support strut.
- Set the clips (A) on the original position, then reattach the support strut (B) on the pivot bolt (C) by pushing the support strut onto the pivot.

- With power tailgate: Remove the left tailgate side trim (see «TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - TAILGATE AREA»(ref-333585-S04198044782009072100000) ).
- With power tailgate: Remove the pivot bracket mounting bolts, then lay the power tailgate rod (A) against the D-pillar trim (B). NOTE: Be carefull not to scratch the body or the trim.
- Remove the tailgate weatherstrip (A) by pulling it out.
- Locate the painted alignment mark (B) on the tailgate weatherstrip. Align the painted mark with the alignment notch in the center of the tailgate opening, and install the tailgate weatherstrip all the way around. Make sure there are no wrinkles in the weatherstrip.
- With power tailgate: Fasten the pivot bracket (A) on the tailgate.
- With power tailgate: Reinstall the left tailgate side trim (see «TRIM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - TAILGATE AREA»(ref-333585-S04198044782009072100000) ).
- Check for water leaks (see step 9 on «REAR WINDOW MOLDING REPLACEMENT»(ref-333583-S14235951642009072100000) ).
