Note. Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION .

- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Clear the DTC with the HDS.
- Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 RPM without load (in P or N) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.
- Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Is DTC P0443 indicated? YES - Go to step 5 . NO - Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the EVAP canister purge valve and the PCM.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), and allow the engine to cool below 140°F (60°C).
- Disconnect the vacuum hose (A) from the purge joint (B) in the engine compartment, and connect a vacuum pump/gauge, 0-30 in.Hg, to the hose.
- Start the engine, and let it idle. Is there vacuum? YES - Go to step 8 . NO - Go to step 14 .
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve 2P connector.
- Check for continuity between EVAP canister purge valve 2P connector terminal No. 1 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Go to step 11 . NO - Go to step 23 .
- Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
- Disconnect PCM connector C (49P).
- Check for continuity between EVAP canister purge valve 2P connector terminal No. 1 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Repair short in the wire between the EVAP canister purge valve and the PCM (C40), then go to step 24 . NO - Go to step 30 .
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve 2P connector.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Measure the voltage between EVAP canister purge valve 2P connector terminal No. 2 and body ground. Is there battery voltage? YES - Go to step 18 . NO - Repair open in the wire between the EVAP canister purge valve and the No. 3 ACG (10 A) fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box, then go to step 24 .
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
- Disconnect PCM connector C (49P).
- Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C40 and EVAP canister purge valve 2P connector terminal No. 1. Is there continuity? YES - Go to step 22 . NO - Repair open in the wire between the EVAP canister purge valve and the PCM (C40), then go to step 24 .
- At the valve side, measure resistance between EVAP canister purge valve 2P connector terminals No. 1 and No. 2. Is there about 23-26 ohms at room temperature? YES - Go to step 30 . NO - Go to step 23 .
- Replace the EVAP canister purge valve (see «EVAP CANISTER REPLACEMENT»(ref-333567-S22632199162009072100000) ).
- Reconnect all connectors.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Reset the PCM with the HDS.
- Do «PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE»(ref-333561-S36442749152009072100000) .
- Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Is DTC P0443 indicated? YES - Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the EVAP canister purge valve and the PCM, then go to step 1 . NO - Go to step 29 .
- Monitor the OBD STATUS for DTC P0443 in the DTCs MENU with the HDS. Does the HDS indicate PASSED? YES - Troubleshooting is complete. If any other Pending or Confirmed DTCs or DTCs were indicated in step 28, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting. • NO - If the HDS indicates FAILED, check for poor connections or loose terminals at the EVAP canister purge valve and the PCM, then go to step 1 . If the HDS indicates EXECUTING or OUT OF CONDITION, keep idling until a result comes on.
- Reconnect all connectors.
- Update the PCM if it does not have the latest software (see «PCM UPDATE»(ref-333558-S24141467512009072100000) ), or substitute a known-good PCM (see «SUBSTITUTING THE PCM»(ref-333557-S35070474232009072100000) ).
- Start the engine, and let it idle.
- Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Is DTC P0443 indicated? YES - Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the EVAP canister purge valve and the PCM. If the PCM was updated, substitute a known-good PCM (see «SUBSTITUTING THE PCM»(ref-333557-S35070474232009072100000) ), then go to step 32 . If the PCM was substituted, go to step 1 . NO - Go to step 34 .
- Monitor the OBD STATUS for DTC P0443 in the DTCs MENU with the HDS. Does the HDS indicate PASSED? YES - If the PCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM (see «PCM REPLACEMENT»(ref-333558-S09775742392009072100000) ). If any other Pending or Confirmed DTCs or DTCs were indicated in step 33 , go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting. • NO - If the HDS indicates FAILED, check for poor connections or loose terminals at the EVAP canister purge valve and the PCM. If the PCM was updated, substitute a known-good PCM (see «SUBSTITUTING THE PCM»(ref-333557-S35070474232009072100000) ), then go to step 32 . If the PCM was substituted, go to step 1 . If the HDS indicates EXECUTING or OUT OF CONDITION, go to step 32 .
Vacuum Pump/Gauge, 0-30 in.Hg, Snap-on YA4000A or equivalent, commercially available
Note. Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION . Fresh fuel has a higher volatility that will create greater pressure/vacuum. The optimum condition for testing is less than a full tank of fresh fuel. If possible, to assist in leak detection, add 1 gallon of fresh fuel to the tank (as long as it will not fill the tank), just before starting these procedures.

- Check the fuel fill cap (the cap must say TIGHTEN TO CLICK). It should turn 1/4 turn after it's tight, then it clicks. Is the correct fuel fill cap installed and properly tightened? YES - Go to step 2 . NO - Replace or tighten the cap, then go to step 29 .
- Check the fuel fill cap seal (A) and the fuel fill pipe mating surface (B). Verify that the fuel fill cap tether cord (C) is not caught under the cap. Is the fuel fill cap seal missing or damaged, is the fuel fill pipe damaged, or is the tether cord caught under the cap? YES - Replace the fuel fill cap or the fuel fill pipe (see «FUEL FILL PIPE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-333562-S21842352532009072100000) ), then go to step 29 . NO - Go to step 3 .
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Clear the DTC with the HDS.
- Do the EVAP FUNCTION TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS. Is the result OK? YES - Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the FTP sensor, the EVAP canister purge valve, or the EVAP canister vent shut valve, and the PCM. • NO - Go to step 6 .
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Check for a poor connection or damage at the fuel tank vapor recirculation tube. Is the tube OK? YES - Go to step 8 . NO - Replace the fuel tank vapor recirculation tube, then go to step 29 . If necessary, replace the fuel tank (see «FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT»(ref-333562-S07903292072009072100000) ), then go to step 29 .
- Disconnect the fuel tank vapor control valve hose (A) and fresh air hose (B) from the EVAP canister (C), and plug the EVAP canister port (D).
- Disconnect the vacuum hose (engine side) (A) from the EVAP canister purge valve (B) in the engine compartment, and connect a vacuum pump/gauge, 0-30 in.Hg, to the vacuum hose as shown.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Select EVAP PCS ON in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS.
- Apply vacuum to the hose until the FTP reads 1.90 V (-0.59 in.Hg, -15.1 mmHg). NOTE: Be careful not to exceed the vacuum. If you do, the FTP sensor can be damaged.
- Select EVAP PCS OFF in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS, and disconnect the vacuum pump/gauge.
- Monitor the FTP SENSOR in the DATA LIST for 1 minute with the HDS. Does the voltage Increase more than 0.2 V (0.1 in.Hg, 2.5 mmHg)? YES - Go to step 15 . NO - Go to step 20 .
- Reconnect the vacuum hose (engine side) to the EVAP canister purge valve.
- Disconnect the vacuum hose (EVAP canister side) (A) from the EVAP canister purge valve (B) in the engine compartment, and connect a vacuum pump/gauge, 0-30 in.Hg, to the vacuum hose as shown.
- Apply vacuum to the hose until the FTP reads 1.90 V (-0.59 in.Hg, -15.1 mmHg). NOTE: Be careful not to exceed the vacuum. If you do, the FTP sensor can be damaged.
- Monitor the FTP SENSOR in the DATA LIST for 1 minute with the HDS. Does the voltage increase more than 0.2 V (0.1 in.Hg, 2.5 mmHg)? YES - Go to step 19 . NO - Replace the EVAP canister purge valve (see «EVAP CANISTER PURGE VALVE REPLACEMENT»(ref-333567-S18532595032009072100000) ), then go to step 28 .
- Check for a loose or damaged EVAP canister purge line between the EVAP canister and the EVAP canister purge valve, or a leaking EVAP canister. Is the line OK? YES - Replace these parts, then go to step 28 : FTP sensor O-ring EVAP canister vent shut valve case and O-ring EVAP canister NO - Reconnect or repair the EVAP canister purge line, then go to step 28 .
- Reconnect the fresh air hose (A) from the EVAP canister (B).
- Reconnect the vacuum hose (engine side) to the EVAP canister purge valve.
- Disconnect the vacuum hose (EVAP canister side) (A) from the EVAP canister purge valve (B) in the engine compartment, and connect a vacuum pump/gauge, 0-30 in.Hg, to the vacuum hose as shown below.
- Select EVAP CVS ON in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS.
- Apply vacuum to the EVAP canoster until the FTP reads 1.90 V (-0.59 in.Hg,-15.1 mmHg). NOTE: Be careful not to exceed the specified vacuum. If you exceed the vacuum, the FTP sensor can be damaged.
- Monitor the FTP SENSOR in the DATA LIST for 1 minute with the HDS. Does the voltage increase more than 0.2 V (0.1 in.Hg, 2.5 mmHg)? YES - Replace the EVAP canister vent shut valve (see «EVAP CANISTER VENT SHUT VALVE REPLACEMENT»(ref-333567-S12672263542009072100000) ), then go to step 28 . NO - Go to step 26 .
- Select EVAP CVS OFF in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS.
- Check these parts for looseness or damage: Fuel fill pipe Fuel vapor return pipe Are the parts OK? YES - Check the fuel tank unit base gasket (see «FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT»(ref-333562-S07903292072009072100000) ), and check the fuel tank, then go to step 28 . NO - Repair or replace the damaged parts, then go to step 28 .
- Reconnect all hoses and connectors.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Reset the PCM with the HDS.
- Do «PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE»(ref-333561-S36442749152009072100000) .
- Do the EVAP FUNCTION TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS. Is the result OK? YES - Troubleshoot is complete. NO - Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the FTP sensor, the EVAP canister purge valve, the EVAP canister vent shut valve, and the PCM, then go to step 1 .

- Clear the DTC with the HDS.
- Do the EVAP FUNCTION TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS. Is the result OK? YES - Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the FTP sensor, the EVAP canister vent shut valve, and the PCM. • NO - Go to step 6 .
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Remove the EVAP canister vent shut valve from the EVAP canister (see «EVAP CANISTER VENT SHUT VALVE REPLACEMENT»(ref-333567-S12672263542009072100000) ).
- Connect the 2P connector to the EVAP canister vent shut valve.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Select EVAP CVS ON in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS.
- Check the EVAP canister vent shut valve (A) operation. Does the valve operate? YES - Go to step 18 . NO - Go to step 12 .
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Replace the EVAP canister vent shut valve (see «EVAP CANISTER VENT SHUT VALVE REPLACEMENT»(ref-333567-S12672263542009072100000) ).
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Reset the PCM with the HDS.
- Do «PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE»(ref-333561-S36442749152009072100000) .
- Do the EVAP FUNCTION TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS. Is the result OK? YES - Troubleshoot is complete. NO - Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the FTP sensor, the EVAP canister vent shut valve, and the PCM, and check all EVAP line connections, then go to step 1 .
- Check the routing of the EVAP canister vent tube. Is there any damage or blockage? YES - Remove the blockage and replace the EVAP canister vent tube if needed, then go to step 19. NO - Do the DTC P0455 troubleshooting (see «DTC P0455, P0456: EVAP System Large Leak Detected; EVAP System Very Small Leak Detected»(ref-333567-S07645270112009072100000) ).
- Reinstall the EVAP canister vernt shut valve.
- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- Reset the PCM with the HDS.
- Do the PCM idle learn procedure (see «PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE»(ref-333561-S36442749152009072100000) ).
- Do the EVAP FUNCTION TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS. Is the result OK? YES - Troubleshooting is complete. NO - Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the FTP sensor, the EVAP canister vent shut valve, and the PCM, and check all EVAP line connections, then go to step 1 .

- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Clear the DTC with the HDS.
- Do the EVAP FUNCTION TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS. Is the result OK? YES - Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the FTP sensor, the EVAP canister purge valve, the EVAP canister vent shut valve, and the PCM. • NO - If the EVAP FUNCTION TEST do not finish cause by DTC, do the indicated DTC troubleshooting. Go to step 4 .
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Replace the EVAP canister purge valve (see «EVAP CANISTER PURGE VALVE REPLACEMENT»(ref-333567-S18532595032009072100000) ).
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Reset the PCM with the HDS.
- Do «PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE»(ref-333561-S36442749152009072100000) .
- Do the EVAP FUNCTION TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS. Is the result OK? YES - Troubleshooting is complete. NO - Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the FTP sensor, the EVAP canister purge valve, the EVAP canister vent shut valve, and the PCM, then go to step 1 .

- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Clear the DTC with the HDS.
- Select EVAP FUNCTION TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS. Is the result OK? YES - Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the FTP sensor, the EVAP canister purge valve, the EVAP canister vent shut valve, and the PCM. • NO - Go to step 4 .
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Check for poor connection, blockage, or damage at the EVAP canister purge line between the intake manifold and the EVAP canister. Is the line OK? YES - Go to step 6 . NO - Reconnect or repair the EVAP canister purge line, then go to step 24 .
- Disconnect the vacuum hose (A) from the EVAP canister purge valve (B).
- Disconnect the vacuum hose (A) from the purge line, and connect a T-fitting (B) from the vacuum gauge and the vacuum pump/gauge, 0-30 in.Hg, to the hose as shown below.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Apply about 2 kPa (0.6 in. Hg, 15 mmHg) of vacuum to the hose.
- Select EVAP PCS ON in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS. Does the vacuum release immediately? YES - Go to step 15 . NO - Go to step 11 .
- Select EVAP PCS OFF in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS.
- Disconnect the vacuum hose (A) from the EVAP canister purge valve (B). Connect a T-fitting (C) from the vacuum gauge, the vacuum pump/gauge, 0-30 in.Hg, and the EVAP canister purge valve as shown.
- Apply about 2 kPa (0.6 in.Hg, 15 mmHg) of vacuum to the hose.
- Select EVAP PCS ON in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS. Does the vacuum release immediately? YES - Check for a blockage in the vacuum hose between the EVAP canister purge valve and the EVAP canister, then go to step 24 . NO - Replace the EVAP canister purge valve (see «EVAP CANISTER PURGE VALVE REPLACEMENT»(ref-333567-S18532595032009072100000) ), then go to step 24 .
- Connect the vacuum pump/gauge vacuum hose (A) as shown below.
- Start the engine, and let it idle. Is there vacuum? YES - Go to step 17 . NO - Check for blockage in the vacuum hose between the EVAP canister purge valve and the intake manifold, then go to step 24 .
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Remove the FTP sensor with its connector connected (see «FTP SENSOR REPLACEMENT»(ref-333567-S14401838932009072100000) ).
- Connect a T-fitting (A) from the vacuum pump/gauge vacuum pump to the FTP sensor (B) as shown.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Check and record the FTP SENSOR reading in the DATA LIST with the HDS.
- Slowly apply about 1.3 kPa (0.4 in.Hg, 10 mmHg) of vacuum to the hose.
- Check the FTP SENSOR in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Does the value change? YES - Check for debris or blockage at the EVAP canister port, then go to step 24 . NO - Replace the FTP sensor (see «FTP SENSOR REPLACEMENT»(ref-333567-S14401838932009072100000) ), then go to step 24 .
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Reset the PCM with the HDS.
- Do «PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE»(ref-333561-S36442749152009072100000) .
- Do the EVAP FUNCTION TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS. Is the result OK? YES - Troubleshooting is complete. NO - Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the FTP sensor, the EVAP canister purge valve, the FTP sensor, and the PCM, then go to step 1 .
- Vacuum Pump/Gauge, 0-30 inHg Snap-on YA4000A or equivalent, commercially available
Note. Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review the general troubleshooting information (see GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION ). If any of DTCs listed below are indicated at the same time as DTC P1458, troubleshoot those DTCs first, then recheck for P1458. P0451, P0452, P0453, P1454: FTP sensor P2422: EVAP canister vent shut valve Do not start the engine during this troubleshooting.

- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Note the recorded on-board snapshot parameters with the HDS: Max Value of FTP SENSOR Min Value of FTP SENSOR FUEL LEVEL
- Check the FUEL LEVEL in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is the FUEL LEVEL less than it is on the on- board snapshot? YES Go to step 4. NO Drain the fuel until the FUEL LEVEL is less than it is on the on-board snapshot, then go to step 4.
- Take a snapshot with the HDS for 3 minutes without starting the engine.
- Check the recorded snapshot parameters with the HDS: Max Value of FTP SENSOR (FINE) Min Value of FTP SENSOR (FINE) Is the difference between the MAX and MIN values of the FTP SENSOR (FINE) about 0.67 kPa (0.2 inHg, 5 mmHg) or less? YES - Go to step 6. NO -Go to step 12 12 .
- Check the FTP SENSOR (FINE) in the recorded snapshot with the HDS. Does it vary 0.067 kPa (0.02 inHg, 0.5 mmHg) or more for 3 seconds? YES - Go to step 7. NO - Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the FTP sensor, the EVAP canister vent shut valve, and the PCM. Also check for a blockage in the EVAP vent hose.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Remove the FTP sensor (see «FTP Sensor Replacement»(ref-333567-S14401838932009072100000) )
- Reconnect the FTP sensor 2P connecter.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Check the FTP SENSOR (FINE) in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Does it vary 0.067 kPa (0.02 inHg, 0.5 mmHg) or more for 3 seconds? YES - Replace the FTP sensor (see «FTP Sensor Replacement»(ref-333567-S14401838932009072100000) ), then go to step 28 28 . NO - Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the FTP sensor, the EVAP canister vent shut valve, and the PCM. Also check for a blockage in the EVAP vent hose.
- Remove the fuel fill cap.
- Check the FTP SENSOR (FINE) in the DATA LIST with the HDS.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Remove the FTP sensor (see «FTP Sensor Replacement»(ref-333567-S14401838932009072100000) ).
- Reconnect the FTP sensor 2P connecter.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Check the FTP SENSOR (FINE) in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is the value about 0.67 kPa (0.2 inHg, 5 mmHg) or more, or about -0.67 kPa (-0.2 inHg, -5 mmHg) or less? YES - Remove the blockage in the EVAP vent hose, and replace it if needed. NO - Go to step 19.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Disconnect the FTP sensor 2P connector.
- Check for a blockage or damage at the FTP sensor ports (EVAP canister side and vent side). Is there any blockage or damage? YES - Remove the blockage and replace the FTP sensor if needed, then go to step 28 28 . NO - Replace the FTP sensor, then go to step 28 28 .
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Disconnect the fresh air hose (A) from the EVAP canister (B), then connect a vacuum pump/gauge, 0-30 inHg, to the EVAP vent shut valve as shown.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Try to apply vacuum to the hose valve (not more than 5.3 kPa (1.6 inHg, 40 mmHg)) while checking the FTP SENSOR (FINE) in the DATA LIST with the HDS. NOTE: To avoid damaging the FTP sensor, do not apply more than 5.3 kPa (1.6 inHg, 40 mmHg) of vacuum. Does the valve hold more than 1.3 kPa (0.4 inHg, 10 mmHg) of vacuum? YES - Replace the EVAP canister vent shut valve, then go to step 26. NO - Remove the blockage in the fresh air hose, and replace it if needed, then go to step 26.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Reconnect all connecters and the fresh air hose.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Reset the PCM with the HDS «PCM RESET»(ref-333557-S12821483362009072100000) .
- Do the PCM idle learn procedure «PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE»(ref-333561-S36442749152009072100000) .
- Take a snapshot with the HDS for 3 minutes without starting the engine.
- Check the recorded snapshot parameters with the HDS: Max Value of FTP SENSOR (FINE) Min Value of FTP SENSOR (FINE) Is the difference between the MAX and MIN values of the FTP SENSOR (FINE) about 0.67 kPa (0.2 inHg, 5 mmHg) or less? YES - Troubleshooting is complete. NO - Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the FTP sensor, the EVAP canister vent shut valve, and the PCM, then go to step 1 1 .
Note. Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION . If DTC P145C is indicated alone, do the troubleshooting for DTC P0496 and P0497 using the freeze data for P145C. If DTC P0497 and P145C are stored at the same time, check for a poor connection, a blockage, or damage at the EVAP canister purge line between the EVAP canister purge valve and the EVAP canister, or a stuck closed EVAP canister purge valve. If any of DTCs listed below are indicated at the same time as DTC P145C, troubleshoot those DTCs first, then recheck for P145C.
P0496, P0497: EVAP system purge flow
- Vacuum Pump/Gauge, 0-30 in.Hg, Snap-on YA4000A or equivalent, commercially available
- Vacuum/Pressure Gauge, 0-4 in.Hg, 07JAZ-001000B
Do this procedure if the fuel fill cap warning message comes on frequent, or if the message does not go off after fuel fill is cap tightened, and the vehicle is driven several days.

- Check the fuel fill cap (the cap must say "Tighten to click"). It should turn 1/4 after it's tight, then it clicks. Is the correct fuel fill cap installed and properly tightened? YES - Go to step 2 . NO - Replace or tighten the cap, then go to step 13 .
- Check the fuel fill cap seal (A) and the fuel fill pipe mating surface (B). Verify that the fuel fill cap tether cord (C) is not caught under the cap. Is the fuel fill cap seal missing or damaged, is the fuel fill pipe damaged, or is the tether cord caught under the cap? YES - Replace the fuel fill cap or the fuel fill pipe (see «FUEL FILL PIPE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-333562-S21842352532009072100000) ), then go to step 13 . NO - Go to step 3 .
- Reinstall and tighten the fuel fill cap until it clicks.
- Clear the DTC with the HDS.
- Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 RPM without load (in P or N) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle for 1 minute.
- Test-drive at 45 mph (72 km/h) for 1 minute or more. Does the fuel cap message come on? YES - Go to step 7 . NO - Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Disconnect the vacuum hose (A) from the EVAP canister purge valve (B) in the engine compartment. Connect a T-fitting (C) from the vacuum gauge and the vacuum pump/gauge, 0-30 in.Hg, to the EVAP canister purge valve as shown below.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Apply about 2 kPa (0.6 in.Hg, 15 mm Hg) of vacuum to the hose.
- Select the EVAP PCS ON in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS. Does the vacuum release immediately? YES - Check for a blockage between the EVAP canister purge valve and the EVAP canister, then go to step 12 . NO - Replace the EVAP canister purge valve (see «EVAP CANISTER PURGE VALVE REPLACEMENT»(ref-333567-S18532595032009072100000) ), then go to step 12 .
- Install the parts in the reverse order of removal.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Reset the PCM with the HDS.
- Do «PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE»(ref-333561-S36442749152009072100000) .
- Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 RPM without load (in P or N) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle for 1 minute.
- Test-drive at 45 mph (72 km/h) for 1 minute or more. Does the fuel fill cap message warning come on? YES - Go to step 1 and recheck. NO - Troubleshooting is complete.

- Raise the vehicle on a lift.
- Remove the EVAP canister cover (A).
- Disconnect the quick-connect fittings (A) (see «FUEL LINE/QUICK-CONNECT FITTING PRECAUTIONS»(ref-333562-S32504828362009072100000) ), the hoses (B), the EVAP canister vent shut valve connector (C), and the FTP sensor connector (D), then remove the harness clamps.
- Remove the bolts (E).
- Remove the EVAP canister assembly (F).
- Remove the EVAP canister vent shut valve (A) and the FTP sensor (B) from the canister (C).
- Reassemble the EVAP canister vent shut valve and the FTP sensor onto the EVAP canister with new O-rings (D) and a new retainer (E). NOTE: Do not coat the O-rings with oil.
- Install the parts in the reverse order of removal.

- Raise the vehicle on a lift.
- Remove the EVAP canister cover (see step 2 on «EVAP CANISTER REPLACEMENT»(ref-333567-S22632199162009072100000) ).
- Disconnect the FTP sensor connector (A).
- Disconnect the hose (B), and remove the FTP sensor (C).
- Install the parts in the reverse order of removal with a new O-ring (D) and a new retainer (E). NOTE: Do not coat the O-ring with oil.
