Fuel Supply System: Component Locations Honda Pilot I

Special Tools Required

  1. Make sure you have the anti-theft codes for the radio and the navigation system, then write down the frequencies for the radio's preset buttons.
  2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
  3. Remove the fuel fill cap.
  4. Remove the intake manifold cover (see «INTAKE MANIFOLD REMOVAL & INSTALLATION»(ref-173990-S36628467322005041500000) ).
  5. Place a wrench on the fuel pulsation damper (A).
  6. Place a rag or shop towel (B) over the fuel pulsation damper.
  7. Slowly loosen the fuel pulsation damper one complete turn.
  8. Remove the fuel pulsation damper from its fitting, and attach the fuel pressure gauge attachment.
  9. Attach the fuel pressure gauge.
  10. Reconnect the negative cable to the battery, then start the engine, and let it idle. If the engine starts, go to step 12 . If the engine does start, go to step 11.
  11. Check to see if the fuel pump is running: listen to the injector rails underneath the intake manifold cover while an assistant turns the ignition switch ON (II). You should hear the fuel flow through the injector rails for about 2 seconds when the ignition switch is turned ON (II). If the pump runs, go to step 12. If the pump does not run, test it (see «Fuel Pump Test»(ref-174005-S17845213482005042700000) ).
  12. Read the pressure gauge. The pressure should be 330-382 kPa (3.4-3.9 kgf/cm 2 , 48-56 psi). If the pressure is OK and engine is running, the test is complete. If the engine is not running, repair the cause, then continue this test. If the pressure is too high, check for a pinched or clogged fuel return hose or line. If the pressure is too low, check for a clogged fuel filter and for leaks in the fuel lines. If the pressure is out of spec and the fuel lines are OK, replace the pressure regulator (see «Fuel Pressure Regulator Replacement»(ref-174005-S20980998372005042700000) ).
  13. Remove the pressure gauge, and reinstall the fuel pulsation damper with a new washer. Tighten the fuel pulsation damper to 22 N.m (2.2kgf.m, 16 lbf.ft).
  14. Install the intake manifold cover (see «INTAKE MANIFOLD REMOVAL & INSTALLATION»(ref-173990-S36628467322005041500000) ).

  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  2. Remove the driver's side second row seat (see «SECOND ROW SEAT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-174049-S19923431502005050300000) ).
  3. Cut the carpet at the dotted line (A). Be careful not to cut the wire harness under the carpet.
  4. Remove the access panel (A) from the floor, then disconnect the fuel pump 5P connector (B).
  5. Remove the fuel fill cap.
  6. Relieve fuel pressure (see «Fuel Pressure Relieving»(ref-174005-S05905615012005042700000) ).
  7. Disconnect the quick-connect fittings from the fuel pump.
  8. Using the tool, loosen the fuel tank unit locknut (A).
  9. Remove the fuel tank unit (A).
  10. Remove the bracket (A), the fuel filter (B), the fuel gauge sending unit (C), the housing (D), and the wire harness (E).
  11. When connecting the fuel pump, make sure the connection is secure and the suction filter (F) is firmly connected to the fuel pump (G).
  12. Check these items before installing the fuel tank unit: When connecting the wire harness, make sure the connection is secure and the connector (H) is firmly locked into place. Do not push the lower part of the suction filter. When installing the fuel gauge sending unit, make sure the connection is secure and the connector is firmly locked into place. Be careful not to bend or twist it excessively.
  13. Install the parts in the reverse order of removal with a new base gasket. When installing the fuel tank unit, align the marks (J) on the unit (K) and the fuel tank (L).

Scheme 32: Fuel Tank Replacement
  1. Relieve the fuel pressure (see «Fuel Pressure Relieving»(ref-174005-S05905615012005042700000) ).
  2. Drain the fuel tank: Remove the fuel pump (see «Fuel Filter Replacement»(ref-174005-S35089261422005042700000) ). Using a hand pump, hose, and container suitable for gasoline, draw the fuel from the fuel tank.
  3. Raise the vehicle, and support it with jackstands.
  4. Remove the propeller shaft (see «PROPELLER SHAFT REMOVAL»(ref-174020-S15368838112005041500000) ).
  5. Remove the fuel tank shield (A).
  6. Disconnect the fuel vapor hose (B), and quick-connect fittings (C). Disconnect the filler neck hoses (D). Slide back the clamps, then twist the hoses as you pull to avoid damaging them. Remove the bolt (E).
  7. Place a jack or other support under the fuel tank (F).
  8. Remove the strap bolts (G).
  9. Remove the fuel tank. If it sticks to the undercoat on its mount, carefully pry it off the mount.
  10. Install the parts in the reverse order of removal.

  1. Check the No. 9 BACK UP LIGHT INSTRUMENT LIGHT (10A) fuse in the driver's under-dash fuse/relay box before testing.
  2. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  3. Remove the driver's side second row seat (see «SECOND ROW SEAT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-174049-S19923431502005050300000) ).
  4. Cut the carpet at the dotted line (see step 3 on «Fuel Filter Replacement»(ref-174005-S35089261422005042700000) ).
  5. Remove the access panel (A) from the floor, then disconnect the fuel pump 5P connector (B).
  6. Measure voltage between fuel pump 5P connector terminals No. 1 and No. 2 with the ignition switch ON (II). There should be battery voltage. If the voltage is as specified, go to step 9. If the voltage is not as specified, go to step 7.
  7. Turn the ignition switch OFF. Check for continuity between fuel pump 5P connector terminals No. 1 and body ground. There should be continuity. If there is continuity, go to step 8. If there no continuity, check for poor ground (G505).
  8. Measure voltage between gauge assembly connector B (22P) terminal No. 22 and body ground with the ignition switch ON (II). There should be battery voltage. If the voltage is as specified, check for an open in the YEL/BLU wire. If the voltage is not as specified, replace the gauge assembly.
  9. Turn the ignition switch OFF. Remove the No. 13 BACK UP (7.5A) fuse from the passenger's underhood fuse/relay box for at least 10 seconds, then reinstall it.
  10. Install a 2 ohm resistor between fuel pump 5P connector terminals No. 1 and No. 2, then turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  11. Check that the pointer of the fuel gauge indicates "F". If the pointer does not indicate "F", replace the gauge. If the pointer indicates "F", inspect the fuel gauge sending unit, then go to step 12.
  12. Relieve the fuel pressure (see «Fuel Pressure Relieving»(ref-174005-S05905615012005042700000) ).
  13. Remove the fuel fill cap.
  14. Disconnect the quick-connect fittings from the fuel pump.
  15. Using the tool, loosen the fuel tank unit locknut (A).
  16. Measure resistance between the No. 1 and No. 2 terminals with the float at E (EMPTY), 1/2 (HALF FULL), and F (FULL) positions. If you do not get the following readings, replace the fuel gauge sending unit (see step 10 on «Fuel Pump Replacement»(ref-174005-S00191034522005042700000) ).
