Steering Column: Removal & Installation Honda Passport II

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Note. On models equipped with anti-theft protection system, obtain 5-digit radio security code from vehicle owner before disconnecting battery.

Removal (Amigo, Rodeo, Trooper & VehiCROSS)

Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Using appropriate Torx bit, remove air bag fixing bolt from behind steering wheel. Carefully lift air bag out of steering wheel. Disconnect Yellow 2-way connector and remove air bag.

Installation (Amigo, Rodeo, Trooper & VehiCROSS)

To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten air bag fixing bolt to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Reactivate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .

Removal (Hombre)

1. Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See «SERVICE PRECAUTIONS»(ref-5212-S29542984312000080900000). Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-5212-S03230603742000080900000). Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Turn steering wheel 90 degrees to access holes to air bag. (Scheme 3) Insert screwdriver and push leaf spring to release pin. Turn steering wheel 180 degrees and repeat procedure on opposite side.
3. Tilt air bag out to access wiring harness. Detach wiring harness from clips. Pull Connector Position Assurance (CPA) clip out and disconnect air bag wiring harness.

Installation (Hombre)

To install, reverse removal procedure. Press air bag firmly onto steering wheel, ensuring leaf spring engages all 4 notched pins. Reactivate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .

Removal & Installation (Amigo, Rodeo, Trooper & VehiCROSS)

1. Ensure wheels are in straight-ahead position. Remove driver's side air bag. See «DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG»(ref-5212-S08758625062000080900000) . Disconnect horn lead. Remove steering wheel nut.
2. Mark steering wheel and shaft for installation reference. Using Puller (J-29752), pull steering wheel from shaft. Feed wiring through wheel and remove steering wheel. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten steering wheel nut to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-5212-S01802292002000080900000) .

Removal & Installation (Hombre)

1. Remove driver's side air bag. See «DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG»(ref-5212-S08758625062000080900000) . Disconnect horn lead. Remove steering wheel nut. Remove horn plunger contact.
2. Ensure wheels are in straight-ahead position. Mark steering wheel and shaft for installation reference. Using Puller (J-1859-A and J-42578), pull steering wheel from shaft. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten steering wheel nut to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-5212-S01802292002000080900000) .

1. Remove steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD»(ref-5212-S26108119362000080900000). Remove transmission shift knob (if necessary). Remove front console assembly and disconnect wiring harness. Remove steering column upper cover. Remove steering column lower cover and engine hood release lever.
2. Disconnect wiring harness connectors located at base of steering column. Remove combination switch and SRS coil assembly. see scheme 2 To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure SRS coil assembly is centered. See «SRS COIL ASSEMBLY CENTERING»(ref-5212-S40604231732000080900000) under ADJUSTMENTS. Tighten fasteners to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-5212-S01802292002000080900000).

1. Remove steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD»(ref-5212-S26108119362000080900000). Remove retaining ring and SRS coil assembly. see scheme 1 If necessary, remove wave washer. Cut SRS coil assembly wiring harness tie straps. Remove SRS coil assembly from vehicle.
2. To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure wheels are in straight-ahead position. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Ensure SRS coil assembly is centered. See «SRS COIL ASSEMBLY CENTERING»(ref-5212-S40604231732000080900000) under ADJUSTMENTS. Tighten fasteners to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-5212-S01802292002000080900000).

1. Ensure lever is in centered (OFF) position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-5212-S03230603742000080900000). Remove necessary trim panels and lower steering column.
2. Remove upper and lower column covers. Remove wiring harness retaining straps. Disconnect multifunction switch Gray and Black connectors. Remove multifunction switch mounting bolts, and remove switch from steering column. see scheme 1
3. To install, place multifunction switch onto column. Using a small screwdriver, compress electrical contact while moving switch into position. Ensure electrical contact of switch is resting on canceling cam assembly. To complete installation, reverse removal procedures. Tighten fasteners to specifications. 1. Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-5212-S03230603742000080900000). Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove column shrouds and lower instrument panel trim. Disconnect ignition switch 8-wire harness connector and remove tie-straps retaining harness to column.
2. Remove ignition switch retaining screw from ignition switch/column lock assembly. (Scheme 4) To access switch retaining screw, it may be necessary to remove upper column bracket bolts from instrument panel in order to lower steering column. Remove ignition switch from rear of ignition switch/column lock assembly. (Scheme 4) To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten fasteners to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-5212-S01802292002000080900000).

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove driver's side air bag. See «DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG»(ref-5212-S08758625062000080900000). Remove lock cylinder. See «IGNITION SWITCH/LOCK ASSEMBLY»(ref-5212-S15459949062000080900000). Remove multifunction switch. See «MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH»(ref-5212-S30327695812000080900000).
2. Using a small screwdriver, gently pry retaining clip on key alarm. Rotate key alarm switch 1/4 turn and remove. Remove 2 ignition switch mounting screws. Remove ignition and key alarm switch as an assembly. see scheme 1 To install, reverse removal procedures. Tighten fasteners to specifications. Scheme 4

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove driver's side air bag (if equipped). See «DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG»(ref-5212-S08758625062000080900000). Remove steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD»(ref-5212-S26108119362000080900000). Remove upper and lower column shrouds and lower instrument panel. Disconnect both ignition switch and combination switch wiring connectors located behind lower instrument panel. Remove tie-straps retaining harnesses to column.
2. Remove combination switch retaining screws and slide switch from shaft. see scheme 5 Remove snap ring and bushing from front of ignition switch. Turn ignition switch to ON position to unlock column.
3. Remove ignition switch and column lock assembly retaining bolts from switch assembly. To access switch assembly retaining bolts, it may be necessary to remove upper column bracket bolts from instrument panel in order to lower steering column. Slide switch assembly from shaft.
4. To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure proper operation of steering lock and ignition switch mechanism before completing reassembly of column components. Tighten fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-5212-S01802292002000080900000).

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-5212-S03230603742000080900000). Remove tilt lever (if equipped) and upper/lower steering column covers. see scheme 1 Lower steering column.
2. Hold ignition in OFF-LOCK position. Using a 1/16" Allen wrench, depress lock cylinder retaining pin through access hole of lock module assembly. Release key to ON position and remove lock cylinder from lock module assembly.
3. To install, place lock cylinder in lock module while in OFF-LOCK position to align lock cylinder with lock module assembly. To complete installation, reverse removal procedures. Tighten fasteners to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-5212-S01802292002000080900000).

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove driver's side air bag (if equipped). See «DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG»(ref-5212-S08758625062000080900000). Remove horn pad and steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD»(ref-5212-S26108119362000080900000). Remove steering column shrouds and lower instrument panel trim. Disconnect all steering column harness connectors and remove tie-straps retaining harnesses to column. Remove combination switch retaining screws and slide switch from shaft. see scheme 2
2. Remove snap ring and bushing. Remove ignition switch/column lock assembly retaining bolts and slide switch from shaft. In engine compartment, make marks on universal joint/coupler and steering gear unit shaft for reassembly reference. (Scheme 5) Remove universal joint/coupler clamp bolt.
3. Remove lower column bracket bolts. Remove upper column bracket bolts. Separate universal joint/coupler from steering gear unit shaft. Remove steering column.

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Place ignition switch in LOCK position. Remove driver's side air bag. See «DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG»(ref-5212-S08758625062000080900000) . Remove steering column trim panels. On column shift models, disconnect transmission shifter cable. On all models, disconnect electrical connectors.
2. Remove nut and bolt from upper and lower shaft connection. Remove upper and lower steering column support nuts. On column shift models, rotate column to allow shifter lever to clear instrument panel opening. On all models, remove steering column. To install, reverse removal procedures. To install, reverse removal procedure. Align reassembly alignment marks on steering gear unit and universal joint/coupler. Tighten fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
