A/C Service Tips and Precautions

WARNINGCompressed air mixed with R-134a forms a combustible vapor. The vapor can burn or explode causing serious injury. Never use compressed air to pressure test R-134a service equipment or vehicle air conditioning systems.
CAUTIONAir conditioning refrigerant or lubricant vapor can irritate your eyes, nose, or throat. Be careful when connecting service equipment. Do not breathe refrigerant or vapor.

The air conditioning system uses HFC-134a (R-134a) refrigerant and polyalkyleneglycol (PAG) refrigerant oil, which are not compatible with CFC-12 (R-12) refrigerant and mineral oil. Do not use R-12 refrigerant or mineral oil in this system, and do not attempt to use R-12 servicing equipment; damage to the air conditioning system or your servicing equipment will result. Use only service equipment that is U.L.-listed and is certified to meet the requirements of SAE J2210 to remove R-134a from the air conditioning system.

If accidental system discharge occurs, ventilate work area before resuming service.

R-134a service equipment or vehicle air conditioning systems should not be pressure tested or leak tested with compressed air.

Additional health and safety information may be obtained from the refrigerant and lubricant manufacturers.

  1. Always disconnect the negative cable from the battery whenever replacing air conditioning parts.
  2. Keep moisture and dirt out of the system. When disconnecting any lines, plug or cap the fittings immediately; don't remove the caps or plugs until just before you reconnect each line.
  3. Before connecting any hose or line, apply a few drops of refrigerant oil to the O-ring.
  4. When tightening or loosening a fitting, use a second wrench to support the matching fitting.
  5. When discharging the system, use an R-134a refrigerant recovery/recycling/charging station; don't release refrigerant into the atmosphere.

Checking for DTCs

The A/C control panel has a self-diagnostic function for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system. To run the self-diagnostic function, do the following

  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  2. Set the fan control dial OFF, the temperature control dial on Max Cool, the mode control dial to select Vent, and the rear fan control dial OFF.
  3. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  4. Press and hold the recirculation control button. While holding the button, press the rear window defogger button five times within 10 seconds. The recirculation indicator blinks two times, then the self-diagnostic begins. If there is any problem in the system after self-diagnostic is finished, the recirculation indicator will blink Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 1 through 15. If there are any problems in the evaporator temperature sensor circuit, the A/C indicator will blink DTC 7 or 8. If no DTC's are found, the indicator will not blink.   5. Turn the ignition switch OFF to cancel the self-diagnostic function. After completing repair work, run the self-diagnostic function again to make sure that there are no other malfunctions.

Max Cool Position Function

When the mode control dial is in the MAX A/C position, the A/C control panel will automatically select the recirculation mode and turn the A/C on. The recirculation switch and A/C switch are disabled and cannot be turned off in this mode. If the A/C control panel fails to function as described, replace it.

DTC (A/C INDICATOR BLINKS) REFERENCE

In case of multiple problems, the recirculation indicator will indicate only the DTC with the least number of blinks.

Scheme 98: Checking for DTCs with the HDS
  1. Make sure the ignition switch is OFF.
  2. Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard.
  3. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  4. Select DTCs in the body electrical/climate control mode MENU of the HDS.
  5. Check for DTCs. If a DTC is indicated, go to the next step. If no DTC(s) is indicated, refer to «THE SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING»(ref-220982-S22949990102006022200000) .
  6. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  7. Disconnect the HDS from the DLC.
  8. Do the troubleshooting procedure for the DTC indicated.

A/C Pressure Switch

The A/C pressure switch consists of a high-low pressure switch (A/C pressure switch A) and a middle pressure switch (A/C pressure switch B).

  1. High-low pressure switch If the refrigerant pressure becomes too high (due to blockage or lack of airflow at the condenser), or too low (due to leakage), the A/C pressure switch stops the A/C request signal to the PCM and the A/C compressor stops operating.
  2. Middle pressure switch If the refrigerant pressure goes above 1,520 kPa (15.5 kgf/cm 2 , 221 psi), the A/C pressure switch closes to signal the PCM to change the speed of the A/C condenser fan and radiator fan to high. When the refrigerant pressure drops below 1,230 kPa (12.5 kgf/cm 2 , 178 psi), the A/C pressure switch opens to signal the PCM to change the speed of the A/C condenser fan and radiator fan to low.

Refrigerant Recovery

  1. Connect an R-134a refrigerant recovery/recycling/charging station (A) to the high-pressure service port (B) and the low-pressure service port (C) (Scheme 106), following the equipment manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Measure the amount of refrigerant oil removed from the A/C system after the recovery process is completed. Be sure to put the same amount of new refrigerant oil back into the A/C system before charging.

  1. When an A/C System has been opened to the atmosphere, such as during installation or repair, it must be evacuated using an R-134a refrigerant recovery/recycling/charging station. (If the system has been open for several days, the receiver/dryer should be replaced, and the system should be evacuated for several hours.)
  2. Connect an R-134a refrigerant recovery/recycling/charging station (A) to the high-pressure service port (B) and the low-pressure service port (C) (Scheme 107), following the equipment manufacturer's instructions. Evacuate the system.
  3. If the low-pressure does not reach more than 93.3 kPa (700 mmHg, 27.6 in.Hg) in 15 minutes, there is probably a leak in the system. Partially charge the system, and check for leaks (see step 1 «REFRIGERANT LEAK TEST»(ref-220982-S07404047412006022200000) ).

System Charging

  1. Connect an R-134a refrigerant recovery/recycling/charging station (A) to the high-pressure service port (B) and the low-pressure service port (C) (Scheme 108), following the equipment manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Evacuate the system (see «SYSTEM EVACUATION»(ref-220982-S10749429402006022200000) ).
  3. Add the same amount of new refrigerant oil to the system that was removed during recovery. Use only DENSO ND-OIL 8 refrigerant oil.
  4. Charge the system with the specified amount of R-134a refrigerant. Do not overcharge the system; the A/C compressor will be damaged. Select the appropriate units of measure for your refrigerant charging station. Refrigerant Capacity: 700 to 750 g 0.70 to 0.75 kg 1.5 to 1.7 lbs 24.7 to 26.5 oz
  5. Check for refrigerant leaks (see «REFRIGERANT LEAK TEST»(ref-220982-S07404047412006022200000) ).
  6. Check for system performance (see «A/C SYSTEM TEST»(ref-220982-S40724196972006022200000) ).
