Key Interlock System Circuit Troubleshooting

  1. Check the A/T system DTCs with the HDS. Are DTCs P0705 and/or P0706 indicated? YES -Go to DTC troubleshooting P0705 (see «DTC P0705: SHORT IN TRANSMISSION RANGE SWITCH CIRCUIT (MULTIPLE SHIFT-POSITION INPUT)»(ref-513160-S24524276932012110700000) ), P0706 (see «DTC P0706: OPEN IN TRANSMISSION RANGE SWITCH CIRCUIT»(ref-513160-S30865992382012110700000) ). NO -Go to step 2.
  2. Move the shift lever to P and set the parking brake.
  3. Remove the steering column covers (see «COLUMN COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-513196-S12359952412012110700000) ).
  4. Disconnect the steering lock 6P connector.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to ACCESSORY (I).
  6. Check if the ignition switch can be turned to LOCK (0). Can the ignition switch be turned to LOCK (0)? YES -Go to step 7. NO -Replace the steering lock (see «CHECK OF LOCK LEVER FORCE»(ref-513156-S23877537152012110700000) ).
  7. Check the No. 14(7.5 A) fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box. Is the fuse OK? YES -Go to step 8. NO -Replace the fuse. If the fuse blows again, repair a short to ground in the No. 14 (7.5 A) fuse circuit.
  8. Make sure the ignition switch is turned to LOCK (0).
  9. Disconnect under-dash fuse/relay box connector M (34P).
  10. Check for continuity between steering lock 6P connector terminal No. 3 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES -Repair a short to body ground in the wire between the key interlock solenoid and the MICU. NO -Go to step 11.
  11. Check for continuity between under-dash fuse/relay box connector M (34P) terminal No. 17 and steering lock 6P connector terminal No. 3. Is there continuity? YES -Go to step 12. NO -Repair an open or high resistance in the wire between the key interlock solenoid and the MICU.
  12. Move the shift lever to P.
  13. Remove the center console (see «CENTER CONSOLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-513202-S39188521932012110700000) ).
  14. Disconnect the park pin switch 2P connector, and disconnect under-dash fuse/relay box connector Q (16P).
  15. Do the park pin switch test (see «PARK PIN SWITCH TEST»(ref-513171-S03396872012012110700000) ). Is the switch OK? YES -Go to step 16. NO -Check the park pin switch installation. If the switch installation is OK, the park pin switch is faulty; replace the park pin switch (see «PARK PIN SWITCH REPLACEMENT»(ref-513160-S40154285602012110700000) ), and retest.
  16. Check for continuity between park pin switch 2P connector terminal No. 2 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES -Repair a short to body ground in the wire between park pin switch 2P connector terminal No. 2 and the MICU. NO -Go to step 17.
  17. Check for continuity between park pin switch 2P connector terminal No. 1 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES -Go to step 18. NO -Repair an open or high resistance in the wire between the park pin switch and body ground (G502).
  18. Check the A/T system Data List with the HDS. Is the transmission range switch indicated ON when the shift lever is in P, and is the transmission range switch indicated OFF when the shift lever is shifted to any position other than P? YES -Go to step 20 . NO -Go to step 19.
  19. Do the transmission range switch test (see «TRANSMISSION RANGE SWITCH TEST»(ref-513160-S30007462352012110700000) ). Is the switch OK? YES -Go to step 20. NO -Check the transmission range switch installation. If the switch installation is OK, replace the transmission range switch (see «TRANSMISSION RANGE SWITCH REPLACEMENT»(ref-513160-S08383140752012110700000) ), and retest.
  20. Disconnect the transmission range switch 8P connector.
  21. Check for continuity between under-dash fuse/relay box connector B (36P) terminal No. 32 and transmission range switch 8P connector terminal No. 6. Is there continuity? YES -Go to step 22. NO -Repair an open or high resistance in the wire between the under-dash fuse/relay box and the transmission range switch.
  22. Check for continuity between transmission range switch 8P connector terminal No. 2 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES -Faulty MICU; replace the under-dash fuse/relay box. USA model (see «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-513189-S16875978532012110700000) ) Canada model (see «CANADA MODEL»(ref-513189-S10776284102012110700000) ) NO -Repair an open or high resistance in the ground wire or poor ground (G101).

Scheme 9: Key Interlock Solenoid Test
  1. Remove the steering column covers (see «COLUMN COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-513196-S12359952412012110700000) ).
  2. Disconnect the steering lock 6P connector (A).
  3. Insert the ignition key in the key cylinder, then turn the ignition key to ACCESSERY (I).
  4. Connect the positive battery terminal to steering lock 6P connector terminal No. 4, and connect the negative battery terminal to terminal No. 3. Check that the ignition key cannot be turned to LOCK (0). Release the battery terminals, and check that the key can be turned to the LOCK (0) position and removed from the cylinder.
  5. If the key interlock solenoid does not work as specified, replace the steering lock (see «CHECK OF LOCK LEVER FORCE»(ref-513156-S23877537152012110700000) ).

Scheme 10: Park Pin Switch Test
  1. Remove the center console (see «CENTER CONSOLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-513202-S39188521932012110700000) ).
  2. Disconnect the park pin switch 2P connector (A).
  3. Check for continuity between terminals No. 1 and No. 2. There should be continuity when the shift lever button is pressed or the shift lever is moved out of P. There should be no continuity when the shift lever is moved to P and the shift lever button is released.
  4. If the continuity is not as specified, check the shift cable adjustment (see «SHIFT CABLE ADJUSTMENT»(ref-513160-S16763293882012110700000) ). If the cable adjustment is OK, go to step 5. If the park pin switch fails the test, replace the park pin switch (see «PARK PIN SWITCH REPLACEMENT»(ref-513160-S40154285602012110700000) ).
  5. Install the parts in the reverse order of removal (see «CENTER CONSOLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-513202-S39188521932012110700000) ).

  1. Do the 12 volt battery terminal disconnection procedure (see «USING THE GR8 BATTERY DIAGNOSTIC STATION»(ref-513168-S03188703672012110700000) ).
  2. Remove the steering column covers (see «COLUMN COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-513196-S12359952412012110700000) ).
  3. Disconnect the 7P connector (A) from the ignition switch (B).
  4. Check for continuity between the terminals in each switch position according to the table.
  5. If the continuity is not as specified, replace the ignition switch (see «IGNITION SWITCH REPLACEMENT»(ref-513171-S36269789492012110700000) ).
  6. Do the 12 volt battery terminal reconnection procedure, (see «RECONNECTION»(ref-513168-S09107234022012110700000) )

Scheme 13: Ignition Switch Replacement
  1. Do the 12 volt battery terminal disconnection procedure, (see «USING THE GR8 BATTERY DIAGNOSTIC STATION»(ref-513168-S03188703672012110700000) )
  2. Remove the steering column covers (see «COLUMN COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-513196-S12359952412012110700000) ).
  3. Disconnect the 7P connector (A) from the ignition switch (B).
  4. Remove the two screws and the ignition switch.
  5. Install the parts in the reverse order of removal.
  6. Do the 12 volt battery terminal reconnection procedure, (see «RECONNECTION»(ref-513168-S09107234022012110700000) )
