  1. Vehicle Lift Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.
  2. Warm Up The Engine Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3, 000 rpm without load in P or N until the radiator fan comes on. Park the vehicle on level ground. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  3. ATF Level Check NOTE: Keep all foreign particles out of the transmission. Check the fluid level within 60 - 90 seconds after turning the engine off. Higher fluid level may be indicated if the radiator fan comes on twice or more. Remove the ATF dipstick (yellow loop) (A), and wipe it with a clean cloth. Insert the dipstick into the guide tube aligning the notch (B) with the guide tab (C). Remove the dipstick, and check the ATF level. It should be between the upper mark (A) and the lower mark (B). If the ATF level is below the lower mark, check for fluid leaks at the transmission, the hoses, and the line joints. If a problem is found, fix it before filling the transmission with ATF. NOTE: If the vehicle is driven when the ATF level is below the lower mark, one or more of these symptoms may occur: Transmission damage. Vehicle does not move in any gear. Vehicle accelerates poorly, and engine rpm abnormally rises when starting off in forward and reverse positions. Engine vibrates at idle. If the ATF level is above the upper mark, drain the ATF to proper level. NOTE: If the vehicle is driven when the ATF level is above the upper mark, the vehicle may creep forward while in N, or have shifting problems. If necessary, fill the transmission with ATF through the dipstick guide tube opening (A) to bring the fluid level between the upper mark and the lower mark of the dipstick. Do not fill the fluid above the upper mark. Always use ATF DW-1 (genuine Honda automatic transmission fluid). Using a non-Honda ATF can affect shift quality. Insert the dipstick into the guide tube aligning the notch with the guide tab.
  4. Front Splash Shield Remove the bolts (A), then remove the clips (B) that secure the front inner fender and the front splash shield (C) to the body. From under the front bumper (D), remove the clips (E). From under the body, remove the clips (F), then pull out the front splash shield.
  5. HDS DLC - Connection Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II). Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle. If it does not communicate, go to the DLC circuit troubleshooting.

Note. Check for DTCs. If any DTCs are stored, troubleshoot and clear them first. Do not allow dust or other foreign particles to enter the port while installing the A/T oil pressure gauge. Be sure to check the ATF level after each pressure port test. When installing or removing the A/T oil pressure gauge, ATF may run out of the pressure inspection ports. Disable the VSA by pressing the VSA OFF button. VSA DTC(s) may appear when running the wheels off the ground. If the VSA DTC(s) appears, clear the DTC (s) with the HDS after pressure testing.

  1. A/T Line Pressure - Test Line Pressure Test Connect the A/T oil pressure gauge to the line pressure inspection port (A). Start the engine, and warm it up to normal operating temperature (the radiator fan comes on). Measure the line pressure from the A/T oil pressure gauge while holding the engine speed at 2, 000 rpm with the shift lever in P or N. NOTE: Do not measure the line pressure with the shift lever in other than P or N. Pressure Fluid Pressure Standard Service Limit Line 926.6 - 985.4 kPa (9.449 - 10.048 kgf/cm 2 , 134.39 - 142.92 psi) 877 kPa (8.94 kgf/cm 2 , 127.1 psi) If the line pressure is out of the service limit, refer to the problem and probable causes listed in the table. Problem Probable causes No or low line pressure Torque converter ATF pump Regulator valve Torque converter check valve Clogged ATF strainer Turn the engine off, then disconnect the A/T oil pressure gauge from the line pressure inspection port. Install the sealing bolt to the line pressure inspection port using a new sealing washer, and tighten the bolt to 18 N.m (1.8 kgf.m, 13 lbf.ft). NOTE: Do not reuse the old sealing washer.
  2. A/T 1st Clutch Pressure - Test 1st Clutch Pressure Test Connect the A/T oil pressure gauge to the 1st clutch pressure inspection port (A). Start the engine, and run the vehicle in 1st gear. Measure the 1st clutch pressure from the A/T oil pressure gauge while holding the engine speed at 2, 000 rpm. Pressure Fluid Pressure Standard Service Limit 1st Clutch 916.8 - 995.2 kPa (9.349 - 10.148 kgf/cm 2 , 132.97 - 144.34 psi) 867 kPa (8.84 kgf/cm 2 , 125.7 psi) If the 1st clutch pressure is out of the service limit, refer to the problem and probable cause listed in the table. Problem Probable cause No or low 1st clutch pressure 1st clutch Turn the engine off, then disconnect the A/T oil pressure gauge from the 1st clutch pressure inspection port. Install the sealing bolt to the 1st clutch pressure inspection port using a new sealing washer, and tighten the bolt to 18 N.m (1.8 kgf.m, 13 lbf.ft). NOTE: Do not reuse the old sealing washer.
  3. A/T 3rd Clutch Pressure - Test 3rd Clutch Pressure Test Connect the A/T oil pressure gauge to the 3rd clutch pressure inspection port (A). Start the engine, and run the vehicle in 3rd gear. Measure the 3rd clutch pressure from the A/T oil pressure gauge while holding the engine speed at 2, 000 rpm.   4. A/T 4th Clutch Pressure - Test 4th Clutch Pressure Test - Engaging 4th Gear Connect the A/T oil pressure gauge to the 4th clutch pressure inspection port (A). Start the engine, and run the vehicle in 4th gear. Measure the 4th clutch pressure from the A/T oil pressure gauge while holding the engine speed at 2, 000 rpm. Pressure Fluid Pressure Standard Service Limit 4th Clutch 916.8 - 995.2 kPa (9.349 - 10.148 kgf/cm 2 , 132.97 - 144.34 psi) 867 kPa (8.84 kgf/cm 2 , 125.7 psi) If the 4th clutch pressure is out of the service limit, refer to the problem and probable cause listed in the table. Problem Probable causes No or low 4th clutch pressure in R Servo valve 4th clutch Turn the engine off, then disconnect the A/T oil pressure gauge from the 4th clutch pressure inspection port. Install the sealing bolt to the 4th clutch pressure inspection port using a new sealing washer, and tighten the bolt to 18 N.m (1.8 kgf.m, 13 lbf.ft). NOTE: Do not reuse the old sealing washer.
  5. A/T 5th Clutch Pressure - Test 5th Clutch Pressure Test Connect the A/T oil pressure gauge to the 5th clutch pressure inspection port (A). Start the engine, and run the vehicle in 5th gear. Measure the 5th clutch pressure from the A/T oil pressure gauge while holding the engine speed at 2, 000 rpm. Pressure Fluid Pressure Standard Service Limit 5th Clutch 916.8 - 995.2 kPa (9.349 - 10.148 kgf/cm 2 , 132.97 - 144.34 psi) 867 kPa (8.84 kgf/cm 2 , 125.7 psi) If the 5th clutch pressure is out of the service limit, refer to the problem and probable cause listed in the table.   1. Air Cleaner Assembly Disconnect the MAF sensor/IAT sensor connector (A). Remove the harness clamp (B). Disconnect the intake air duct (C) and the intake air pipe (D). Remove the air cleaner (E).
  2. Intake Air Duct Remove the intake air duct.

Note. Check for DTCs. If any DTCs are stored, troubleshoot and clear them first. Do not allow dust or other foreign particles to enter the port while installing the A/T oil pressure gauge. Be sure to check the ATF level after each pressure port test. When installing or removing the A/T oil pressure gauge, ATF may run out of the pressure inspection ports. Disable the VSA by pressing the VSA OFF button. VSA DTC(s) may appear when running the wheels off the ground. If the VSA DTC(s) appears, clear the DTC (s) with the HDS after pressure testing.

  1. A/T 2nd Clutch Pressure - Test 2nd Clutch Pressure Test Connect the A/T oil pressure gauge to the 2nd clutch pressure inspection port (A). Temporarily install the intake air duct and the air cleaner assembly, and reconnect the MAF sensor/IAT sensor connector. Start the engine, and run the vehicle in 2nd gear. Measure the 2nd clutch pressure from the A/T oil pressure gauge while holding the engine speed at 2, 000 rpm. Pressure Fluid Pressure Standard Service Limit 2nd Clutch 916.8 - 995.2 kPa (9.349 - 10.148 kgf/cm 2 , 132.97 - 144.34 psi) 867 kPa (8.84 kgf/cm 2 , 125.7 psi) If the 2nd clutch pressure is out of the service limit, refer to the problem and probable cause listed in the table. Problem Probable cause No or low 2nd clutch pressure 2nd clutch Turn the engine off, remove the air cleaner assembly and the intake air duct. Disconnect the A/T oil pressure gauge from the 2nd clutch pressure inspection port. Install the sealing bolt to the 2nd clutch pressure inspection port using a new sealing washer, and tighten the bolt to 18 N.m (1.8 kgf.m, 13 lbf.ft). NOTE: Do not reuse the old sealing washer.

  1. Intake Air Duct Install the intake air duct.
  2. Air Cleaner Assembly Install the air cleaner (A). Connect the intake air pipe (B) and the intake air duct (C). Install the harness clamp (D). Connect the MAF sensor/IAT sensor connector (E).
  3. Front Splash Shield Install the front splash shield (A), then install the bolts (B) and the clips (C, D). Make sure the clips snap into place securely.

  1. Warm Up The Engine Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3, 000 rpm without load in P or N until the radiator fan comes on. Park the vehicle on level ground. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  2. HDS DLC - Connection Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II). Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle. If it does not communicate, go to the DLC circuit troubleshooting.
  3. Automatic Transmission Road - Test Apply the parking brake, and block all four wheels. Start the engine. Shift to D while pressing the brake pedal. Press the accelerator pedal, and release it suddenly. The engine should not stall. Repeat step 3 in all shift lever positions. Prepare the HDS and the MVCI to take a SNAPSHOT (refer to the user's guide for more details if needed): Set the Trigger Type to Parameter. Adjust the Parameter setting to APP Sensor A (V) above 1.2 V. Set the recording time to 60 seconds. Set the trigger point to (Negative) - 30 seconds. Find a suitable level road. When you are ready to do the test, press OK on the HDS. Accelerate quickly until APP Sensor A reads 1.3 V. Maintain a steady throttle until the transmission shifts to 5th gear, then slow the vehicle and come to a stop. Save the snapshot if the entire event was recorded or increase the recording time setting as necessary, and repeat step 8 . Adjust the APP Sensor A parameter setting to 2.4 V. Test-drive the vehicle again. Accelerate quickly until APP Sensor A reads 2.5 V. Maintain a steady throttle until the transmission shifts to 5th gear (or a reasonable speed), then slow the vehicle and come to a stop. Save the snapshot if the entire event was recorded or increase the recording time setting as necessary, and repeat step 11 . Adjust the APP Sensor A parameter setting to 4.5 V. Accelerate quickly until the accelerator pedal is to the floor. Maintain a steady pedal until the transmission shifts to 4th gear, then slow to a stop, and save the snapshot. Review each snapshot individually, and compare the Shift Control, APP Sensor A (V), and the Vehicle Speed to the following table. The vehicle should immediately begin to slow down from engine braking. Shift to 1, accelerate from a stop at full throttle, and check for abnormal noise and clutch slippage. Upshifts should not occur in this position. Shift to 2, accelerate from a stop at full throttle, and check for abnormal noise and clutch slippage. Upshifts and downshifts should not occur in this position. Shift to R, accelerate from a stop at to full throttle momentarily, and check for abnormal noise and clutch slippage. Park the vehicle on an upward slope (about 16 degrees), apply the parking brake, and shift into P. Release the brake; the vehicle should not move. NOTE: Always use the parking brake to hold the vehicle when stopped on an incline in gear. Depending on the grade of the incline, the vehicle could roll if the brake is released.

Insert the dipstick into the guide tube aligning the notch with the guide tab.
  3. HDS DLC - Connection Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II). Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle. If it does not communicate, go to the DLC circuit troubleshooting.
  4. Automatic Transmission Stall Speed - Test Make sure the A/C switch is OFF. Shift to D while pressing the brake pedal firmly, then press the accelerator pedal for 6 to 8 seconds, and note the engine speed. NOTE: Do not move the shift lever or remove your foot off the brake pedal, while raising the engine speed. Allow 2 minutes for cooling, then repeat the test in the all shift lever positions. NOTE: Do not test stall speed for more than 10 seconds at a time. Record the engine speed at 6 to 8 seconds after pressing the accelerator pedal. Higher engine speed will be indicated for 5 seconds. Stall speed tests should be used for diagnostic purposes only. The stall speed should be the same in the all shift lever positions. Do not test stall speed with A/T pressure gauges installed. Stall Speed rpm Specification: 2, 200 rpm Service Limit: 2, 050 - 2, 350 rpm If any of the stall speeds are out of the service limit, refer to the problems and probable causes listed in the table. Scheme 142: Removal
  1. Vehicle Lift Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.
  2. Front Splash Shield Remove the bolts (A), then remove the clips (B) that secure the front inner fender and the front splash shield (C) to the body. From under the front bumper (D), remove the clips (E). From under the body, remove the clips (F), then pull out the front splash shield.

Scheme 143: Test
  1. ATF Temperature Sensor - Test Disconnect the connector. Measure the resistance between shift solenoid wire harness 7P connector (A) terminals No. 5 and No. 6 for ATF temperature sensor. Standard: 50 ohms - 25 kohms If the resistance is out of the standard, replace the ATF temperature sensor and the solenoid wire harness. NOTE: The ATF temperature sensor is not available separately from the shift solenoid wire harness. If the resistance is within the standard, the test is complete. Check the connector for corrosion, dirt, or oil, and clean or repair if necessary, then connect the connector securely.

  1. Front Splash Shield Install the front splash shield (A), then install the bolts (B) and the clips (C, D). Make sure the clips snap into place securely.
