  1. Remove the transmission (see «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION»(ref-173139) ).
  2. Remove the pressure plate and clutch disk (see «CLUTCH REPLACEMENT»(ref-173135-S24664809792005031000000) ).
  3. Remove the six flywheel bolts, then separate the flywheel from the crankshaft flange. After installation, tighten the bolts in a crisscross pattern.
  4. Install the pressure plate and clutch disc (see «CLUTCH DISC AND PRESSURE PLATE INSTALLATION»(ref-173135-S39756395642005031000000) ).
  5. Install the transmission (see «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION»(ref-173139) ).

Scheme 233: Drive Plate Removal and Installation
  1. Remove the transmission: Automatic transmission (see «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION (EXCEPT HYBRID)»(ref-173145) ). CVT (see «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION (CVT)»(ref-173219) ).
  2. Remove the six drive plate bolts, then separate the drive plate from the crankshaft flange. After installation, tighten the bolts in a crisscross pattern
  3. Install the transmission: Automatic transmission (see «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION (EXCEPT HYBRID)»(ref-173145) ). CVT (see «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION (CVT)»(ref-173219) ).

  1. Remove the oil pump (see «OIL PUMP OVERHAUL»(ref-173105-S35418340972005030900000) ).
  2. Measure the connecting rod end play with a feeler gauge between the connecting rod and crankshaft. Connecting Rod End Play Standard (New): 0.15-0.30 mm (0.006-0.012 in.) Service Limit: 0.40 mm (0.016 in.)
  3. If the connecting rod end play is out-of-tolerance, install a new connecting rod, and recheck. If it is still out-of-tolerance; replace the crankshaft (see «Oil Pan Removal»(ref-173102-S07541859882005030900000) ).
  4. Mount a dial indicator on the block so that its tip contacts the end of the crankshaft.
  5. Push the crankshaft firmly away from the dial indicator, and zero the dial against the end of the crankshaft. Then pull the crankshaft firmly back toward the indicator; the dial reading should not exceed the service limit. Crankshaft End Play Standard (New): 0.10-0.35 mm (0.004-0.014 in.) Service Limit: 0.45 mm (0.018 in.)
  6. If the end play is excessive, replace the thrust washers and recheck. If it is still out-of-tolerance, replace the crankshaft (see «Oil Pan Removal»(ref-173102-S07541859882005030900000) ).

Scheme 236: Main Bearing Clearance Inspection
  1. Remove the main caps and bearing halves.
  2. Clean each main journal and bearing half with a clean shop towel.
  3. Place one strip of plastigage across each main journal. NOTE: If the engine is still in the car when you bolt the main cap down to check the clearance, the weight of the crankshaft and drive plate will flatten the plastigage further than just the torque on the cap bolt and give you an incorrect reading. For an accurate reading, support the crank with a jack under the counterweights, and check only one bearing at a time.
  4. Reinstall the bearings and caps, then torque the bolts to 51 N.m (5.2 kgf.m, 38 lbf.ft). Do not rotate the crankshaft.
  5. Remove the cap and bearing half, and measure the widest part of the plastigage. Main Bearing-to-Journal Oil Clearance Standard (New): No. 1, 5: 0.018-0.036mm (0.0007-0.0014 in.) No. 2, 3, 4: 0.024-0.042mm (0.0009-0.0017 in.) Service Limit: 0.05 mm (0.002 in.)
  6. If the plastigage measures too wide or too narrow, (remove the engine if it's still in the car), remove the crankshaft, and remove the upper half of the bearing. Install a new, complete bearing with the same color code, and recheck the clearance. Do not file, shim, or scrape the bearings or the caps to adjust clearance.
  7. If the plastigage shows the clearance is still incorrect, try the next larger or smaller bearing (the color listed above or below that one), and check again. If the proper clearance cannot be obtained by using the appropriate larger or smaller bearings, replace the crankshaft and start over (see «Oil Pan Removal»(ref-173102-S07541859882005030900000) ).

Crankshaft Bore Code Location

Letters have been stamped on the end of the block as a code for the size of each of the five main journal bores.

Use them, and the numbers stamped on the crankshaft (codes for main journal size), to choose the correct bearings. If the codes are indecipherable because of an accumulation of dirt and dust, do not scrub them with a wire brush or scraper. Clean them only with solvent or detergent.

Scheme 240: Rod Bearing Clearance Inspection
  1. Remove the connecting rod cap and bearing half.
  2. Clean the crankshaft rod journal and bearing half with a clean shop towel.
  3. Place a strip of plastigage across the rod journal.
  4. Reinstall the bearing half and cap, and torque the bolts to 32 N.m (3.3 kgf.m, 24 lbf.ft). Do not rotate the crankshaft.
  5. Remove the rod cap and bearing half and measure the widest part of the plastigage. Connecting Rod Bearing-to-Journal Oil Clearance Standard (New): 0.024-0.042 mm (0.0009-0.0017 in.) Service Limit: 0.05 mm (0.002 in.)
  6. If the plastigage measures too wide or too narrow, remove the upper half of the bearing, install a new, complete bearing with the same color code, and recheck the clearance. Do not file, shim, or scrape the bearings or the caps to adjust clearance.
  7. If the plastigage shows the clearance is still incorrect, try the next larger or smaller bearing (the color listed above or below that one), and check clearance again. If the proper clearance cannot be obtained by using the appropriate larger or smaller bearings, replace the crankshaft and start over (see «Oil Pan Removal»(ref-173102-S07541859882005030900000) ).

Numbers have been stamped on the side of each connecting rod as a code for the size of the big end. Use them, and the letters stamped on the crank (codes for rod journal size), to choose the correct bearings. If the codes are indecipherable because of an accumulation of dirt and dust, do not scrub them with a wire brush or scraper. Clean them only with solvent or detergent.

  1. Remove the piston from the cylinder block (see «Oil Pan Removal»(ref-173102-S07541859882005030900000) ).
  2. Assemble the special tool as shown.
  3. Assemble and adjust the length of the piston pin driver head and shaft to 53 mm (2.1 in.).
  4. With the embossed mark facing up, place the piston assembly (A) on the special tool (B). Be sure you position the recessed flat on the piston against the lugs on the base attachment.
  5. Press the pin (C) out with the pin driver (D), pilot collar (E) and a hydraulic press.

  1. Measure the diameter of the piston pin. Piston Pin Diameter Standard (New): 18.996-19.000 mm (0.7479-0.7480 in.)
  2. Zero the dial indicator to the piston pin diameter.
  3. Measure the piston pin-to-piston clearance. Piston Pin-to-Piston Clearance Standard (New): 0.010-0.020 mm (0.0004-0.0008 in.)
  4. Check the difference between the piston pin diameter and connecting rod small end diameter. Piston Pin-to-Connecting Rod Interference Standard (New): 0.016-0.036 mm (0.0006-0.0014 in.)

  1. Assemble the piston and connecting rod with the connecting rod oil hole (A) facing the "IN" mark (B).
  2. Insert the pilot collar (A) into the piston and connecting rod.
  3. With the embossed mark facing up, place the piston assembly (B) on the special tool (C). Be sure you position the recessed flat on the piston against the lugs on the base attachment.
  4. Press the pin (D) in with the pin driver (E) and a hydraulic press.

  1. Remove the piston from the cylinder block (see «Oil Pan Removal»(ref-173102-S07541859882005030900000) ).
  2. Using a ring expander (A), remove the old piston rings (B).
  3. Clean all ring grooves thoroughly with a squared-off broken ring or ring groove cleaner with a blade to fit the piston grooves. The top ring groove is 1.0 mm (0.04 in.) wide. The second ring groove is 1.2 mm (0.05 in.) wide. The oil ring groove is 2.0 mm (0.08 in.) wide. File down a blade if necessary. Do not use a wire brush to clean the ring grooves, or cut the ring grooves deeper with cleaning tools. NOTE: If the piston is to be separated from the connecting rod, do not install new rings yet.
  4. Using a piston, push a new ring (A) into the cylinder bore 15-20 mm (0.6-0.8 in.) from the bottom.
  5. Measure the piston ring end-gap (B) with a feeler gauge: If the gap is too small, check to see if you have the proper rings for your engine. If the gap is too large, recheck the cylinder bore diameter against the wear limits (see «Block and Piston Inspection»(ref-173102-S24918677982005030900000) ). If the bore is over the service limit, the cylinder block must be rebored. Piston Ring End-Gap Top Ring Standard (New): 0.15-0.30 mm (0.006-0.012 in.) Service Limit: 0.60 mm (0.024 in.) Second Ring Standard (New): 0.30-0.45 mm (0.0120-0.018 in.) Service Limit: 0.60 mm (0.024 in.) Oil Ring Standard (New): 0.20-0.70 mm (0.008-0.028 in.) Service Limit: 0.80 mm (0.031 in.)
  6. Install the top ring (A) and second ring (B) as shown. The manufacturing marks (C) must be facing upward.
  7. Rotate the rings in their grooves to make sure they do not bind.
  8. Position the ring end gaps as shown
  9. After installing a new set of rings, measure the ring-to-groove clearances: Top Ring Clearance Standard (New): 0.035-0.060 mm (0.0014-0.0024 in.) Service Limit: 0.13 mm (0.005 in.) Second Ring Clearance Standard (New): 0.030-0.055 mm (0.0012-0.0022 in.) Service Limit: 0.13 mm (0.005 in.)

  1. Set the crankshaft to BDC for each cylinder.
  2. Remove the connecting rod caps, and slip short sections of rubber hoses (A) over the connecting rod bolts. Then install the ring compressor, and check that the bearing is securely in place.
  3. Position the arrow (B) facing the timing belt side of the engine.
  4. Position the piston in the cylinder, and tap it in using the wooden handle of a hammer (A). Maintain downward force on the ring compressor (B) to prevent the rings from expanding before entering the cylinder bore.
  5. Stop after the ring compressor pops free, and check the connecting rod-to-crank journal alignment before pushing the piston into place.
  6. Check the connecting rod bearing clearance with plastigage (see «Connecting Rod Bearing Replacement»(ref-173102-S36515247372005030900000) ).
  7. Apply new engine oil to the bolt threads, then install the rod caps with bearings. Torque the nuts to 32 N.m (3.3 kgf.m, 24 lbf.ft).

  1. Remove the connecting rod caps, then install the ring compressor, and check that the bearing is securely in place.
  2. Position the arrow (A) facing the timing belt side of the engine.
  3. Position the piston in the cylinder, and tap it in using the wooden handle of a hammer (A). Maintain downward force on the ring compressor (B) to prevent the rings from expanding before entering the cylinder bore.

  1. Check the connecting rod bearing clearance with plastigage (see «Connecting Rod Bearing Replacement»(ref-173102-S36515247372005030900000) ).
  2. Check the main bearing clearance with plastigage (see «Crankshaft Main Bearing Replacement»(ref-173102-S13196347112005030900000) ).
  3. Apply new engine oil to the main bearings and rod bearings.
  4. Install the bearing halves in the cylinder block and connecting rods.
  5. Hold the crankshaft so rod journal No. 2 and rod journal No. 3 are straight up, and lower the crankshaft into the block.
  6. Apply new engine oil to the thrust washer surfaces. Install the thrust washers (A) on both edges of the No. 4 main bearing recess.
  7. Apply new engine oil to the threads of the connecting rod bolts.
  8. Seat the rod journals into connecting rod No. 1 and connecting rod No. 4. Install the caps and nuts finger tight. Install the cap so the bearing recess is on the same side as the recess in the rod.
  9. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise, and seat the journals into connecting rod No. 2 and connecting rod No. 3. Install the connecting rod cap and bolts finger tight.
  10. Tighten the connecting rod bolts to 32 N.m (3.3 kgf.m, 24 lbf.ft).
  11. Install the bearing cap bridge. Coat the bolt threads with engine oil.
  12. Torque the bearing cap bridge bolts sequentially in two steps. 1st step torque: 25 N.m (2.5 kgf.m, 18 lbf.ft) 2nd step torque: 51 N.m (5.2 kgf.m, 38 lbf.ft) NOTE: Whenever any crankshaft or connecting rod bearing is replaced, it is necessary after reassembly to run the engine at idling speed until it reaches normal operating temperature, then continue to run it for about 15 minutes.
  13. The seal mating surface on the engine block end cover should be dry. Apply a light coat of multipurpose grease to the crankshaft and to the lip of the seal.
  14. Drive the crankshaft oil seal until the special tool bottoms on the engine block end cover.
  15. Confirm that the clearance is equal all the way around with a feeler gauge. Clearance: 0.5-0.8 mm (0.02-0.03 in.)
  16. Remove any old liquid gasket from the engine block end cover mating surfaces, bolts, and bolt holes.
  17. Clean and dry the engine block end cover mating surfaces.
  18. Apply liquid gasket, P/N 08718-0001 or 08718-0003, evenly to the block mating surface of the engine block end cover and to the inner threads of the bolt holes. Install the dowel pins (A), and the engine block end cover (B) on the cylinder block. NOTE: Do not install the parts if 4 minutes or more have elapsed since applying the liquid gasket. Instead, reapply liquid gasket after removing the old residue.
  19. After assembly, wait at least 30 minutes before filling the engine with new engine oil.
  20. Remove any old liquid gasket from the oil pump mating surfaces, bolts, and bolt holes.
  21. Clean and dry the oil pump mating surfaces.
  22. Install the oil pump (A). 1 Install a new crankshaft oil seal in the oil pump. 2 Apply liquid gasket, P/N 08718-0001 or 08718-0003, evenly to the block mating surface of the oil pump and to the inner threads of the bolt holes. NOTE: Do not install the parts if 4 minutes or more have elapsed since applying the liquid gasket. Instead, reapply liquid gasket after removing the old residue. 3 Grease the lip of the oil seal and apply oil to the new O-ring (B). 4 Install the dowel pins (C), then align the inner rotor with the crankshaft and install the oil pump. 5 Clean the excess grease off the crankshaft and check the seal for distortion.
  23. Install the oil screen (D) with a new gasket (E).
  24. Install the oil pan: Aluminum Oil Pan (see «Aluminum Oil Pan (EX, HX models)»(ref-173102-S16155564162005030900000) ). Steel Oil Pan (see «Steel Oil Pan (LX, DX models)»(ref-173102-S31282748732005030900000) ).
  25. Install the cylinder head (see «Cylinder Head Installation»(ref-173102-S05728060162005030900000) ).
  26. Install the transmission: Manual transmission (see «TRANSMISSION FLUID INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT»(ref-173137-S11962751392005031000000) ). Automatic transmission (see «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION (EXCEPT HYBRID)»(ref-173145) ). CVT (see «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION (CVT)»(ref-173219) ).
  27. Install the engine assembly (see «Engine Installation»(ref-173102-S30250513432005030900000) ).

Scheme 268: Aluminum Oil Pan (EX, HX models)

  1. Remove any old liquid gasket from the oil pan mating surfaces, bolts, and bolt holes.
  2. Clean and dry the oil pan mating surfaces.
  3. Apply liquid gasket, P/N 08718-0001 or 08718-0003, evenly to the oil pan mating surface of the block and to the inner threads of the bolt holes. NOTE: Apply a 4 mm wide bead of liquid gasket. Apply a second bead where the two ends of the first bead meet. Do not install the parts if 4 minutes or more have elapsed since applying liquid gasket. Instead, reapply liquid gasket after removing the old residue.
  4. Install the oil pan on the cylinder block.
  5. Tighten the bolts and nuts in two or three steps. In the final step, tighten all bolts and nuts, in sequence to 12 N.m (1.2 kgf.m, 8.7 lbf.ft). NOTE: After assembly, wait at least 30 minutes before filling the engine with oil.

  1. Remove any old liquid gasket from the oil pan mating surfaces, bolts, and bolt holes.
  2. Clean and dry the oil pan mating surfaces.
  3. Apply liquid gasket, P/N 08718-0001 or 08718-0003, on the oil pump and engine block end cover mating areas. NOTE: Do not install the parts if 4 minutes or more have elapsed since applying liquid gasket. Instead, reapply liquid gasket after removing the old residue.
  4. Apply liquid gasket, P/N 08718-0001 or 08718-0003, to the new oil pan gasket (A) at the four corners of the recesses (B), then install the oil pan (C) on the cylinder block. NOTE: Do not install the parts if 4 minutes or more have elapsed since applying liquid gasket. Instead, reapply liquid gasket after removing the old residue.
  5. Tighten the bolts and nuts finger tight at six points as shown.
  6. Tighten all bolts and nuts, clockwise in three steps. In the final step, tighten all bolts, in sequence to 12 N.m (1.2 kgf.m, 8.7 lbf.ft).
  7. After assembly, wait at least 30 minutes before filling the engine with new engine oil.

  1. Clean and dry the crankshaft oil seal housing.
  2. Apply a light coat of multipurpose grease to the crankshaft and to the lip of the seal.
  3. Using the special tool, drive in the crankshaft oil seal until the driver bottoms against the oil pump. When the seal is in place, clean any excess grease off the crankshaft and check that the oil seal lip is not distorted.
