Note. Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces. To avoid damaging the wiring and terminals, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion. Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses, or interfere with other parts.

- Open the hood, and secure it with the hood support rod (A) in the wide-open position (B).
- Remove the front grille cover: 2-door (see «FRONT GRILLE COVER REPLACEMENT»(ref-424905-S18421991502011100100000) ) 4-door (see «FRONT GRILLE COVER REPLACEMENT»(ref-424905-S18421991502011100100000) )
- Remove the strut brace (if equipped) (see «FRAME BRACE REPLACEMENT»(ref-424906-S23205703172011100100000) ).
- Relieve the fuel pressure (see «FUEL PRESSURE RELIEVING»(ref-424884-S22334925682011100100000) ).
- Do the battery removal procedure (see «BATTERY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-424893-S34655733102011100100000) ).
- Remove the intake air duct (see step 2 under «WATER OUTLET REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-424879-S02894204882011100100000) ).
- Remove the air cleaner (see «THROTTLE BODY CLEANING»(ref-424885-S32312340552011100100000) ).
- Remove the harness clamps (A), then remove the bolts (B) and loosen the bolts (C), then remove the battery base (D).
- Remove the water separator (see step 3 under «INTAKE MANIFOLD REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-424883-S35103715102011100100000) ).
- Disconnect the battery cables (A) from the under-hood fuse/relay box.
- Disconnect the harness connector (B), and remove the harness connector from the bracket (C).
- Remove the ECM/PCM cover (A), then remove the three bolts (B) securing the ECM/PCM.
- Disconnect the ECM/PCM connectors (A) and the engine wire harness connector (B).
- Remove the harness clamps (C) and the bracket (D).
- Disconnect the EVAP canister hose (A) and the brake booster vacuum hose (B).
- Remove the quick-connect fitting cover (A), then disconnect the fuel feed hose (B) (see «FUEL LINE/QUICK-CONNECT FITTING REMOVAL»(ref-424884-S30669989662011100100000) ).
- Remove the drive belt (see «DRIVE BELT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-424887-S12762503882011100100000) ).
- Remove the power steering pump (A) without disconnecting the power steering hoses, and the power steering hose bracket (B).
- Wait until the engine is cool, then carefully remove the radiator cap.
- Remove the A/C condenser fan shroud assembly (see «CONNECTING PIPE REPLACEMENT»(ref-424879-S11611121092011100100000) ).
- M/T model: Remove the three bolts securing the shift cable holder, then remove the shift cable and the select cable (see step 8 under «TRANSMISSION REMOVAL»(ref-424881-S21406968052011100100000) ). Do not bend the cables excessively.
- M/T model: Remove the clutch slave cylinder and the clutch line bracket mounting nut (see step 2 under «SLAVE CYLINDER REPLACEMENT»(ref-424880-S25109867162011100100000) ). Do not operate the clutch pedal once the slave cylinder has been removed.
- Raise the vehicle on the lift.
- Remove the front wheels.
- Remove the splash shield.
- Loosen the drain plug in the radiator, and drain the engine coolant (see «COOLANT CHECK»(ref-424879-S40133990312011100100000) ).
- Drain the engine oil (see «ENGINE OIL REPLACEMENT»(ref-424873-S00348703672011100100000) ).
- Drain the transmission fluid: Manual transmission (see «TRANSMISSION FLUID INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT»(ref-424881-S09475370472011100100000) ) Automatic transmission (see «ATF REPLACEMENT»(ref-424882-S42873958482011100100000) )
- Remove exhaust pipe A.
- A/T model: Remove the shift cable. Do not bend the shift cable excessively: Vehicles with JHM VINs (see step 53 under «TRANSMISSION REMOVAL»(ref-424882-S29035931562011100100000) ). Vehicles with 1HG VINs (see step 55 under «TRANSMISSION REMOVAL»(ref-424882-S29035931562011100100000) ).
- Remove the damper fork (see «DAMPER/SPRING REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-424907-S03937755122011100100000) ).
- Separate the knuckles from the lower arms (see step 11 under «KNUCKLE/HUB/WHEEL BEARING REPLACEMENT»(ref-424907-S17157431802011100100000) ).
- Remove the driveshafts (see «DRIVESHAFT INSPECTION»(ref-424877-S23660701032011100100000) ). Coat all precision-finished surfaces with new engine oil. Tie plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.
- Remove the bolt (A) securing the power steering fluid line bracket, and unclamp the power steering fluid line clamp (B) on the front subframe.
- Remove the bolts securing the steering gearbox mounting bracket (A) and the heat shield (B). (right side)
- Lower the vehicle on the lift.
- Remove the two bolts (A) securing the power steering fluid line brackets.
- Remove the bolts securing the steering gearbox stiffeners (A) and the washers (B). (left side)
- A/T model (without ATF warmer): Disconnect the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) cooler hoses, then plug the lines and hoses.
- Disconnect the heater hoses (A) and the upper radiator hose (B).
- Disconnect the quick connector from the thermostat cover (see step 3 under «THERMOSTAT REPLACEMENT»(ref-424879-S36758338532011100100000) ).
- Attach the engine hanger adapter (VSB02C000015) to the threaded hole in the cylinder head.
- Install the engine support hanger (AAR-T1256) onto the vehicle as shown, and attach the hook to the slotted hole in the engine hanger adapter. Tighten the wing nut (A) by hand, and lift and support the engine/transmission. NOTE: Be careful when working around the windshield. Be careful not to damage the hood opener cable when installing the engine support hanger at the front bulkhead.
- Disconnect the vacuum hose (A) and remove the front engine mount stop (B), then remove the front engine mount mounting bolt (C).
- A/T model (without ATF warmer): Remove the ATF line brackets (D).
- M/T model: Lift and support the engine/transmission with a jack and a wood block under the engine/transmission. Remove the rear engine mount mounting bolt (A), then remove the mount-to-subframe bolts (B).
- A/T model: Lift and support the engine/transmission with a jack and a wood block under the engine/transmission. Remove the rear engine mount mounting bolt (A), then remove the mount-to-subframe bolts (B).
- A/T model: Remove the rear engine mount upper bracket (C).
- Raise the vehicle on the lift.
- Remove the nuts securing the lower transmission mount.
- Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch connector (A), then remove the A/C compressor (B) without disconnecting the A/C hoses. Do not bend the A/C hoses excessively.
- Remove the subframe middle mount on both sides.
- Attach the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the front subframe by looping the belt (A) over the front of the front subframe (B), then secure the belt with its stop (C).
- Raise the jack and line up the slots in the subframe adapter arms with the bolt holes on the jack base, then securely attach them with four bolts.
- Remove the front subframe mounting bolts (A), the four 12 x 1.25 mm bolts (B), (C) securing four stiffeners (D), then lower the front subframe (E).
- Lower the vehicle on the lift.
- Remove the ground cable (A).
- Remove the side engine mount bracket (B).
- Install the universal lifting eyelet (07AAK-SNAA120).
- Attach a chain hoist (A) to the universal lifting eyelet (B) and the transmission hanger (C), then lift the engine/transmission until it is securely supported by the chain hoist, and remove the engine support hanger and the engine hanger adapter.
- Remove the upper transmission mount bracket mounting bolts (A). NOTE: Do not remove the TORX bolt (B) from the upper transmission mount. If the TORX bolt is removed, the upper transmission mount must be replaced as an assembly. M/T model A/T model
- Remove the ground cable (C).
- Check that the engine/transmission is completely free of the vacuum hoses, the fuel hoses, the coolant hoses, and the electrical wiring.
- Slowly lower the engine/transmission about 150 mm (5.91 in). Check once again that all the hoses and the electrical wiring are disconnected and free from the engine/transmission, then lower it all the way and support it.
- Disconnect the chain hoist from the engine/transmission.
- Raise the vehicle, and remove the engine/transmission from under the vehicle.
Engine Installation

- Install the engine mount brackets and the accessory brackets, and tighten their bolts to the specified torque.
- Raise the vehicle on the lift, and position the engine/transmission under the vehicle. Lower the vehicle, and attach the universal lifting eyelet (07AAK-SNAA120) and the chain hoist to the universal lifting eyelet and the transmission hanger, then lift the engine into position in the vehicle. NOTE: Reinstall the mounting bolts/support nuts in the sequence given in the following steps. Failure to follow this sequence may cause excessive noise and vibration, and reduce engine mount life.
- Attach the engine hanger adapter (VSB02C000015) to the threaded hole in the cylinder head.
- Install the engine support hanger (AAR-T1256) onto the vehicle as shown, and attach the hook to the slotted hole in the engine hanger adapter. Tighten the wing nut (A) by hand, and lift and support the engine/transmission. NOTE: Be careful when working around the windshield. Be careful not to damage the hood opener cable when installing the engine support hanger at the front bulkhead.
- Tighten the new upper transmission mount bracket mounting bolts (A) to the specified torque. M/T model A/T model
- M/T: Install the ground cable (B).
- Remove the chain hoist.
- Remove the universal lifting eyelet.
- Install the side engine mount bracket (A), and tighten the new side engine mount bracket mounting bolts (B), then tighten the side engine mount mounting bolt (C).
- Install the ground cable (D).
- Raise the vehicle on the lift.
- Support the front subframe (A) with the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) and a jack, raise the front subframe up to the body.
- Loosely install the new front subframe mounting bolts (four) (B), the 12 x 1.25 mm bolts (four) (C) (D), and the stiffeners (four) (E).
- Install the subframe middle mount (A) on both sides, then loosely tighten the new subframe middle mount mounting bolts (B).
- Remove the jack and the subframe adapter.
- Insert the 15.7 mm side of the subframe alignment pin through the positioning slot (A) on the right rear stiffener, through the positioning hole (B) on the subframe, and into the positioning hole (C) on the body, then loosely tighten the subframe right rear mounting bolt.
- Insert the 15.7 mm side of the subframe alignment pin through the positioning slot on the left rear stiffener, through the positioning hole on the subframe, and into the positioning hole on the body, then loosely tighten the subframe left rear mounting bolt.
- Using the subframe alignment pin, tighten the subframe right rear mounting bolt.
- Using the subframe alignment pin, tighten the subframe left rear mounting bolt.
- Tighten the stiffener mounting bolts to the specified torque.
- Tighten the front and rear subframe mounting bolts to the specified torque.
- Check that the positioning slots on the right/left rear stiffener, the positioning holes on the subframe, and the positioning holes on the body are aligned using the subframe alignment pin.
- Tighten the bolts securing the subframe middle mount on both sides.
- Tighten the nuts securing the lower transmission mount.
- Lower the vehicle on the lift.
- Remove the engine support hanger and the engine hanger adapter.
- Tighten the new front engine mount mounting bolt (A), then install the front engine mount stop (B) using new nuts (C), and connect the vacuum hose (D).
- A/T: (without ATF warmer): Install the ATF cooler line brackets (E).
- M/T: Lift and support the engine/transmission with a jack and a wood block under the engine/transmission, then install the rear engine mount.
- M/T: Remove the jack, then tighten the new rear engine mount mounting bolts in the numbered sequence shown.
- A/T: Install the rear engine mount upper bracket (A) using new bolt (B) and the bolt (C). Lift and support the engine/transmission with a jack and a wood block under the engine/transmission, then install the rear engine mount (D).
- A/T: Remove the jack, then tighten the new rear engine mount mounting bolts in the numbered sequence shown.
- Loosen the side engine mount bracket mounting bolts, then retighten the bolts in the numbered sequence shown.
- Loosen the upper transmission mount bracket mounting bolts, then retighten them to the specified torque. M/T model A/T model
- Connect the quick connector to the thermostat cover (see step 11 under «THERMOSTAT REPLACEMENT»(ref-424879-S36758338532011100100000) ).
- Connect the heater hoses (A) and the upper radiator hose (B).
- A/T model (without ATF warmer): Connect the ATF cooler hoses (A), and secure the hoses with the clips (B) (see «ATF COOLER HOSE REPLACEMENT»(ref-424882-S28923606392011100100000) ).
- Install the bolts securing the steering gearbox stiffeners (A) and the washers (B). (left side)
- Install the two bolts (A) securing the power steering fluid line brackets.
- Raise the vehicle on the lift.
- Install the bolts securing the steering gearbox mounting bracket (A) and the heat shield (B). (right side)
- Install the power steering fluid line bracket (A), and clamp the power steering fluid line clamp (B) on the front subframe.
- Install the A/C compressor (A), then connect the A/C compressor clutch connector (B).
- Install a new set ring on the end of each driveshaft, then install the driveshafts (see «DRIVESHAFT INSTALLATION»(ref-424877-S17774821142011100100000) ). Make sure each ring "clicks" into place in the differential and the intermediate shaft.
- Connect the lower arms to the knuckles (see step 5 under «LOWER ARM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-424907-S21736754832011100100000) ).
- Install the damper fork (see step 3 under «LOWER ARM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-424907-S21736754832011100100000) ).
- A/T model: Install the shift cable: Vehicles with JHM VINs (see step 32 under «TRANSMISSION INSTALLATION»(ref-424882-S41527673502011100100000) ). Vehicles with 1HG VINs (see step 35 under «TRANSMISSION INSTALLATION»(ref-424882-S41527673502011100100000) ).
- Install exhaust pipe A using new gaskets (B) and new self-locking nuts (C).
- Install the splash shield.
- Install the front wheels.
- Lower the vehicle on the lift.
- M/T: Install the clutch slave cylinder and the clutch line bracket mounting nut (see step 49 under «TRANSMISSION INSTALLATION»(ref-424881-S38076163412011100100000) ).
- M/T: Install the shift cable and the select cable, then tighten the three bolts securing the shift cable holder, (see step 47 under «TRANSMISSION INSTALLATION»(ref-424881-S38076163412011100100000) )
- Install the A/C condenser fan shroud assembly (see «INSTALLATION»(ref-424879-S32357429322011100100000) ).
- Install the power steering pump (A), and the power steering pump outlet hose bracket (B).
- Install the drive belt (see «DRIVE BELT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-424887-S12762503882011100100000) ).
- Connect the fuel feed hose (A), then install the quick-connect fitting cover (B) (see «FUEL LINE/QUICK-CONNECT FITTING INSTALLATION»(ref-424884-S08601778662011100100000) ).
- Connect the EVAP canister hose (A) and the brake booster vacuum hose (B).
- Connect the ECM/PCM connectors (A) and the engine wire harness connector (B).
- Install the harness clamps (C) and the bracket (D).
- Install the ECM/PCM (A), then install the ECM/PCM cover (B).
- Connect the battery cables (A) to the under-hood fuse/relay box.
- Connect the harness connector (B), and install the harness connector to the bracket (C).
- Install the water separator (see step 10 under «INSTALLATION»(ref-424883-S17549031272011100100000) ).
- Install the battery base (A), then install the harness clamps (B) and the bolts (C).
- Install the air cleaner (see «THROTTLE BODY CLEANING»(ref-424885-S32312340552011100100000) ).
- Install the intake air duct (see step 2 under «WATER OUTLET REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-424879-S02894204882011100100000) ).
- Install the strut brace (if equipped) (see «FRAME BRACE REPLACEMENT»(ref-424906-S23205703172011100100000) ).
- Install the front grille cover. 2-door (see «FRONT GRILLE COVER REPLACEMENT»(ref-424905-S18421991502011100100000) ) 4-door (see «FRONT GRILLE COVER REPLACEMENT»(ref-424905-S18421991502011100100000) )
- Do the battery installation procedure (see «BATTERY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-424893-S34655733102011100100000) ).
- Inspect for fuel leaks. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II) (do not operate the starter) so the fuel pump runs for about 2 seconds and pressurizes the fuel line. Repeat this operation three times, then check for fuel leakage at any point in the fuel line.
- Refill the engine with engine oil (see «ENGINE OIL REPLACEMENT»(ref-424873-S00348703672011100100000) ).
- Refill the transmission with fluid: Manual transmission (see «TRANSMISSION FLUID INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT»(ref-424881-S09475370472011100100000) ) Automatic transmission (see «ATF REPLACEMENT»(ref-424882-S42873958482011100100000) )
- A/T: Move the shift lever to each gear, and verify that the A/T gear position indicator follows the transmission range switch.
- M/T: Check that the transmission shifts into all gears smoothly.
- Refill the radiator with engine coolant, and bleed the air from the cooling system (see «COOLANT CHECK»(ref-424879-S40133990312011100100000) ).
- Check for fluid leaks.
- Do the ECM/PCM reset procedure (see «HDS CLEAR COMMAND»(ref-424896-S05872897322011100100000) ).
- Do the CKP pattern clear/CKP pattern learn procedure (see «CKP PATTERN CLEAR/CKP PATTERN LEARN»(ref-424896-S34443197862011100100000) ).
- Inspect the idle speed (see «IDLE SPEED INSPECTION»(ref-424898-S02875553102011100100000) ).
- Inspect the ignition timing (see «IGNITION TIMING INSPECTION»(ref-424888-S42278114692011100100000) ).
- Check the wheel alignment (see «WHEEL ALIGNMENT»(ref-424876-S29503753732011100100000) ).
