DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
The fuel pump is comprised of a DC motor, a circumference flow pump, a relief valve for protecting fuel line systems, a check valve for retaining residual pressure, an inlet port, and a discharge port. The pump assembly consists of the impeller (driven by motor), the pump casing (which forms the pumping chamber), and a cover of the pump.
CUT-OFF RELAY
- With ignition switch off, remove dashboard under cover and pull down fuse box panel mounting bolt and nut. Remove fuel pump cut-off relay.
- Check for continuity between No. 3 terminal and body ground. Continuity should exist. If there is no continuity, check Black wire.
- Attach positive probe of voltmeter to No. 2 terminal and negative probe to No. 3 terminal. Then turn ignition switch "ON". Battery voltage should exist. If not, check Black/Yellow wire from ignition switch and fuel cut-off relay as well as No. 1 fuse (15 Amp).
- Turn ignition switch "OFF". Attach positive probe of voltmeter to No. 4 terminal and negative probe to No. 3 terminal. Then turn ignition switch "ON". Battery voltage should exist. If not, check Blue wire from ignition coil and fuel cut-off relay.
- Turn ignition switch "OFF". Connect jumper wire between No. 1 terminal and No. 2 terminal. Turn ignition "ON". The fuel pump should run. If not, check Yellow wire between fuel pump and fuel cut-off relay, and check Black wire from fuel pump to ground. If wires are OK, replace fuel cut-off relay and retest.

FUEL PUMP TEST
- Check for clogged fuel filter and/or fuel line before checking fuel pump pressure. Remove fuel cut-off relay from fuse box. Connect No. 1 terminal to No. 2 terminal located at fuse box side of fuel cut-off relay.
- Disconnect fuel line at fuel filter in engine compartment and connect pressure gauge. Turn engine on until pressure stabilizes, then turn key off. Pressure should be 2.6-3.3 psi (0.18-0.23 kg/cm 2 ). If gauge shows at least 2.6 psi (0.18 kg/cm 2 ), go to step 3. If gauge shows less than 2.6 psi (0.18 kg/cm 2 ), replace pump and retest.
- Remove pressure gauge and hold a graduated container under hose. Turn ignition on for 60 seconds, then off and measure amount of fuel flow. Fuel flow should be more than 25.7 oz. (760 cc). If fuel flow is 25.7 oz. (760 cc) or more in 60 seconds, reconnect cut-off relay and fuel hose. If fuel flow is less than 25.7 oz. (760 cc), replace fuel pump and retest.
Note. Check for clogged fuel filter and/or fuel line before replacing pump.
Removal & Installation
- Relieve fuel pressure. Remove fuel pump access cover located inside of luggage area. Disconnect fuel lines and coupler. Remove fuel pump mounting nuts.
- Remove fuel pump from fuel tank through access hole. If fuel pump is hard to remove from tank, loosen fuel tank mounting nuts and slightly lower fuel tank. To install, reverse removal procedure.
