Power Steering System: Removal & Installation GMC Yukon III

Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement (4.3L, 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L, 6.2L)

Tools Required

  1. J 25033-C Pulley Installer. See «Special Tools»(ref-364521-S16829705432010063000000) .
  2. J 25034-C Pulley Remover. See «Special Tools»(ref-364521-S16829705432010063000000) .

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the engine coolant fan upper shroud, if equipped. Refer to «Engine Coolant Fan Upper Shroud Replacement (Mechanical)»(ref-364492-S24575716452010063000000) .
  2. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to «Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory»(ref-364523-S09180508032010063000000) .
  3. Use remover J 25034-C to remove the power steering pump pulley. See «Special Tools»(ref-364521-S16829705432010063000000) .

Installation Procedure

  1. Place the power steering pump pulley on the end of the power steering pump shaft.
  2. Install the power steering pump pulley using installer J 25033-C . See «Special Tools»(ref-364521-S16829705432010063000000) .
  3. Ensure that the power steering pump pulley (1) is flush against the power steering pump shaft (2) with an allowable variance of 0.25 mm (0.010 in).
  4. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to «Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory»(ref-364523-S09180508032010063000000) .
  5. Install the engine coolant fan upper shroud, if equipped. Refer to «Engine Coolant Fan Upper Shroud Replacement (Mechanical)»(ref-364492-S24575716452010063000000) .
  1. Remove the power steering pump pulley. Refer to «Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement (4.3L, 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L, 6.2L)»(ref-364521-S06185373182010063000000) .
  2. Remove as much power steering fluid from the power steering fluid reservoir as possible.
  3. Disconnect the steering shaft coupling from the steering gear. Refer to «Steering Shaft Coupling Replacement»(ref-364484-S10640076132010063000000) .
  4. Remove the engine shield. Refer to «Engine Shield Replacement»(ref-364494-S23909670222010063000000) .
  5. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.
  6. Disconnect the power steering gear inlet hose (2) from the power steering pump assembly from underneath the vehicle.
  7. Disconnect the power steering fluid cooler hose clamp (5) and the power steering fluid cooler hose (4) from the power steering pump assembly (1).
  8. If equipped with hydroboost, disconnect the power brake booster outlet hose clamp (3) and disconnect the power brake booster outlet hose (2) from power steering pump assembly (1).
  9. Remove the power steering pump bracket bolt from the side of the engine.
  10. Remove the power steering pump bolts.
  11. Remove the power steering pump assembly from the vehicle.
  12. Transfer any parts as needed.
  1. Install all transferable parts as needed.
  2. Install the power steering pump assembly to the vehicle.
  3. Install the power steering pump bracket bolt to the side of the engine. Tighten: Tighten the bolt to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).
  4. Install the power steering pump bolts. Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).
  5. Connect the power steering fluid cooler hose (4) and the power steering fluid cooler hose clamp (5) to the power steering pump assembly (1).
  6. If equipped with hydroboost, connect the power brake booster outlet hose (2) and the power brake booster outlet hose clamp (3) to the power steering pump assembly (1).
  7. Connect the power steering gear inlet hose (2) to the power steering pump assembly (1) from underneath the vehicle. Tighten: Tighten the fitting to 32 N.m (24 lb ft).
  8. Clean any excess fluid power steering fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
  9. Connect the steering shaft coupling. Refer to «Steering Shaft Coupling Replacement»(ref-364484-S10640076132010063000000) .
  10. Install the engine shield. Refer to «Engine Shield Replacement»(ref-364494-S23909670222010063000000) .
  11. Install the power steering pump pulley. Refer to «Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement (4.3L, 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L, 6.2L)»(ref-364521-S06185373182010063000000) .
  12. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to «Power Steering System Bleeding»(ref-364521-S18522497532010063000000) .
  1. Remove the power steering pump from the vehicle. Refer to «Power Steering Pump Replacement (4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L, and 6.2L)»(ref-364521-S22767834342010063000000) .
  2. Use a chisel in order to cut and remove the power steering pump shaft seal.
  1. Lubricate the new power steering pump shaft seal with power steering fluid.
  2. Use a deep 1 inch tall socket in order to install the new power steering pump shaft seal.
  3. Install the power steering pump. Refer to «Power Steering Pump Replacement (4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L, and 6.2L)»(ref-364521-S22767834342010063000000) .

Scheme 8: Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement

Preliminary Procedure: Remove the front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
1Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Nut CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution . Tighten: 60 N.m (44 lb ft)
2Steering Linkage Inner Tie Rod Nut Tighten: 75 N.m (55 lb ft)
3Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod CAUTION: Do not attempt to disconnect a steering linkage joint by driving a wedge between the joint and the attached part. Seal damage may result which will cause premature failure of the joint. Procedure Use the J-24319-B: Puller in order to disconnect the steering linkage outer tie rod from the steering knuckle. Inspect the steering linkage inner tie rod for bent or damaged threads. Clean the tapered surface of the steering knuckle. Lubricate the steering linkage inner tie rod threads with chassis lubricant. Measure and adjust the front toe. Refer to Wheel Alignment - Steering Wheel Angle and/or Front Toe Adjustment . Special Tools: J-24319-B: Steering Linkage and Tie Rod Puller For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools .
CAUTION

CAUTION
Do not attempt to disconnect a steering linkage joint by driving a wedge between the joint and the attached part. Seal damage may result which will cause premature failure of the joint.
  1. Remove the steering linkage outer tie rod. Refer to «Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement»(ref-364521-S18025743722010063000000) .
  2. Remove the steering linkage inner tie rod nut from the steering linkage inner tie rod.
  3. Remove the outer boot clamp (2) from the steering gear boot (3).
  4. Remove the inner boot clamp from the steering gear boot.
  5. Remove the steering gear boot from the steering gear (5).
  1. Position the inner boot clamp onto the steering gear boot (3).
  2. Apply grease to the steering linkage inner tie rod (1) and to the steering gear (5).
  3. Install the steering gear boot onto the steering linkage inner tie rod.
  4. Ensure the steering gear boot is not twisted, puckered, or improperly folded.
  5. Install the steering gear boot onto the steering gear. Seat the steering gear boot in the groove on the steering gear housing (4).
  6. Install the inner boot clamp to the steering gear boot.
  7. Install the outer boot clamp (2) to the steering gear boot.
  8. Install the steering linkage inner tie rod nut to the steering linkage inner tie rod.
  9. Install the steering linkage outer tie rod. Refer to «Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement»(ref-364521-S18025743722010063000000) .
  1. Remove the steering linkage outer tie rod. Refer to «Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement»(ref-364521-S18025743722010063000000) .
  2. Remove the steering linkage inner tie rod nut (2) from the steering linkage inner tie rod (1).
  3. Remove the outer boot clamp (2) from the steering gear boot (1).
  4. Remove the inner boot clamp (1) from the steering gear boot (2) with side cutters.
  5. Discard the inner boot clamp.
  6. Remove the steering gear boot from the steering gear.
  1. Position the NEW inner boot clamp (1) onto the steering gear boot (2).
  2. Apply grease to the steering linkage inner tie rod (2) and to the steering gear (1).
  3. Install the steering gear boot (3) onto the steering linkage inner tie rod.
  4. Ensure the steering gear boot is not twisted, puckered, or improperly folded.
  5. Install the steering gear boot onto the steering gear. Seat the steering gear boot in the groove on the steering gear housing.
  6. Install the inner boot clamp (1) to the steering gear boot (2) with the J-22610: pliers.
  7. Install the outer boot clamp (2) to the steering gear boot (1).
  8. Install the steering linkage inner tie rod nut (2) to the steering linkage inner tie rod (1).
  9. Install the steering linkage outer tie rod. Refer to «Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement»(ref-364521-S18025743722010063000000) .
  1. Remove the fascia grille. Refer to «Fascia Grille Replacement (Escalade)»(ref-364465-S34016987052010063000000) or «Fascia Grille Replacement (Z71)»(ref-364465-S42159345192010063000000) or «Fascia Grille Replacement (GMC Denali XL)»(ref-364465-S16533707762010063000000) or «Fascia Grille Replacement (Suburban, Tahoe)»(ref-364465-S05455514182010063000000) or «Fascia Grille Replacement (Yukon)»(ref-364465-S24426520042010063000000) or «Fascia Grille Replacement (GMC Yukon Hybrid 2 Mode)»(ref-364465-S23279722522010063000000) .
  2. Remove the radiator grille reinforcement support, if equipped. Refer to «Radiator Grille Reinforcement Support Replacement»(ref-364470-S15587709842010063000000) .
  3. Remove as much power steering fluid as possible from the power steering fluid reservoir.
  4. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.
  5. Disconnect the power steering gear outlet hose (2) from the power steering fluid cooler (4).
  6. Disconnect the power steering fluid cooler hose (3) from the power steering pump (1).
  7. Remove the power steering fluid cooler bolts (2) from the power steering fluid cooler.
  8. Remove the power steering fluid cooler from the vehicle.
  1. Install the power steering fluid cooler to the vehicle.
  2. Install the power steering fluid cooler bolts (2) to the power steering fluid cooler (1). Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
  3. Connect the power steering fluid cooler hose (3) to the power steering pump (1).
  4. Connect the power steering gear outlet hose (2) to the power steering fluid cooler (4).
  5. Clean any excess fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
  6. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to «Power Steering System Bleeding»(ref-364521-S18522497532010063000000) .
  7. Install the radiator grille reinforcement support, if equipped. Refer to «Radiator Grille Reinforcement Support Replacement»(ref-364470-S15587709842010063000000) .
  8. Install the fascia grille. Refer to «Fascia Grille Replacement (Escalade)»(ref-364465-S34016987052010063000000) or «Fascia Grille Replacement (Z71)»(ref-364465-S42159345192010063000000) or «Fascia Grille Replacement (GMC Denali XL)»(ref-364465-S16533707762010063000000) or «Fascia Grille Replacement (Suburban, Tahoe)»(ref-364465-S05455514182010063000000) or «Fascia Grille Replacement (Yukon)»(ref-364465-S24426520042010063000000) or «Fascia Grille Replacement (GMC Yukon Hybrid 2 Mode)»(ref-364465-S23279722522010063000000) .
  1. Remove the fascia grille. Refer to «Fascia Grille Replacement (Escalade)»(ref-364465-S34016987052010063000000) or «Fascia Grille Replacement (Z71)»(ref-364465-S42159345192010063000000) or «Fascia Grille Replacement (GMC Denali XL)»(ref-364465-S16533707762010063000000) or «Fascia Grille Replacement (Suburban, Tahoe)»(ref-364465-S05455514182010063000000) or «Fascia Grille Replacement (Yukon)»(ref-364465-S24426520042010063000000) or «Fascia Grille Replacement (GMC Yukon Hybrid 2 Mode)»(ref-364465-S23279722522010063000000) .
  2. Remove the radiator grille reinforcement support, if equipped. Refer to «Radiator Grille Reinforcement Support Replacement»(ref-364470-S15587709842010063000000) .
  3. Remove as much power steering fluid from the power steering fluid reservoir as possible.
  4. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.
  5. Disconnect the power steering fluid cooler hose (3) from the steering gear (2).
  6. Disconnect the power steering fluid cooler hose (4) from the power steering pump (1).
  7. Remove the power steering fluid cooler bolts (2).
  8. Remove the power steering fluid cooler (1) from the vehicle.
  1. Install the power steering fluid cooler (1) to the vehicle.
  2. Install the power steering fluid cooler bolts (2). Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
  3. Connect the power steering fluid cooler hose (4) to the power steering pump (1).
  4. Connect the power steering fluid cooler hose (3) to the steering gear (2).
  5. Clean any excess fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
  6. Install the radiator grille reinforcement support, if equipped. Refer to «Radiator Grille Reinforcement Support Replacement»(ref-364470-S15587709842010063000000) .
  7. Install the fascia grille. Refer to «Fascia Grille Replacement (Escalade)»(ref-364465-S34016987052010063000000) or «Fascia Grille Replacement (Z71)»(ref-364465-S42159345192010063000000) or «Fascia Grille Replacement (GMC Denali XL)»(ref-364465-S16533707762010063000000) or «Fascia Grille Replacement (Suburban, Tahoe)»(ref-364465-S05455514182010063000000) or «Fascia Grille Replacement (Yukon)»(ref-364465-S24426520042010063000000) or «Fascia Grille Replacement (GMC Yukon Hybrid 2 Mode)»(ref-364465-S23279722522010063000000) .
  8. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to «Power Steering System Bleeding»(ref-364521-S18522497532010063000000) .
  1. Install drain pans under the vehicle as needed.
  2. Remove the power steering gear inlet hose (2) from the power brake booster (1).
  3. Remove the power steering gear inlet hose (2) from the power steering gear.
  4. Remove the power steering gear inlet hose (2) from the vehicle.
  1. Route the power steering gear inlet hose in the same position it was in prior to removal.
  2. Install the power steering gear inlet hose (2) to the power brake booster (1) and hand tighten only. Rotate the power steering gear inlet hose clockwise until the it contacts the power brake booster housing and then hold it in position while tightening it to the fitting specification.
  3. Install the power steering gear inlet hose (2) to the power steering gear. Tighten: Tighten the fittings to 32 N.m (24 lb ft).
  4. Clean any excess fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
  5. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to «Power Steering System Bleeding»(ref-364521-S18522497532010063000000) .

Scheme 9: Power Steering Gear Inlet Pipe/Hose Replacement (Gas Without Hydroboost)

1Power Steering Gear Inlet Hose Fitting CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution . Procedure Remove as much power steering fluid from the power steering fluid reservoir as possible. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed. Tighten: 32 N.m (24 lb ft)
2Power Steering Gear Inlet Hose Retaining Plate Bolt Tighten: 12 N.m (106 lb in)
3Power Steering Gear Inlet Hose CAUTION: Refer to Power Steering Hose Disconnected Caution . Procedure Use the remover/installer J 44586 to replace the steering gear seals if necessary. See Special Tools . Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding . Tip: Note the routing of the power steering gear inlet hose to ensure proper installation. Keep all open connections in the power steering system clean and free of debris.

  1. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.
  2. Disconnect the power steering fluid cooler hose clamp and hose (3) from the steering gear (2).
  3. Remove the power steering gear outlet pipe (1) from the steering gear (2).
  1. Install the power steering gear outlet pipe (1) to the steering gear (2).
  2. Connect the power steering fluid cooler hose (3) and hose clamp to the steering gear (2).
  3. Clean any excess fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
  4. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to «Power Steering System Bleeding»(ref-364521-S18522497532010063000000) .

Scheme 10: Electronic Power Steering Motor Control Module Replacement

WARNING: Always perform the High Voltage Disabling procedure prior to servicing any High Voltage component or connection. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and proper procedures must be followed. The High Voltage Disabling procedure will perform the following tasks: Identify how to disable high voltage. Identify how to test for the presence of high voltage. Identify condition under which high voltage is always present and personal protection equipment (PPE) and proper procedures must be followed. Failure to follow the procedures exactly as written may result in serious injury or death. Preliminary Procedures Perform the high voltage disabling procedure. Refer to High Voltage Disabling . Remove the drive motor generator control module. Refer to Drive Motor Generator Control Module Assembly Replacement .
1Electronic Power Steering Control Module Bolt (Qty: 3) CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution . Tighten: 9 N.m (80 lb in)
2Electronic Power Steering Control Module Procedure Disconnect any electrical connectors as needed. After repairs, perform the high voltage system connect procedure. Refer to High Voltage Enabling . After enabling the high voltage system, perform the power steering control module setup procedure. Refer to Power Steering Control Module Programming and Setup .

Scheme 11: Steering Gear Replacement (Hydraulic Rack and Pinion)

CAUTION: With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components: The steering column The intermediate shaft(s) The steering gear After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has became un-centered, refer to your specific SIR coil's centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil. Preliminary Procedures With the front wheels of the vehicle in the straight ahead position, use the J-42640: pin in order to lock the steering column. Place drain pans under the vehicle. Remove as much power steering fluid from the power steering fluid reservoir as possible. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation . Remove the front differential shield, if equipped. Refer to Shield Replacement . Disconnect the steering shaft coupling from the steering gear. Refer to Steering Shaft Coupling Replacement . Special Tools: J-42640: Steering Column Anti-Rotation PinFor equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools .
1Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Nut (Qty: 2) CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution . Tighten: 60 N.m (44 lb ft)
2Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod (Qty: 2) Procedure: Disconnect the steering linkage outer tie rods from the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement .
3Power Steering Gear Inlet Hose Retaining Plate Bolt Tighten: 12 N.m (106 lb in)
4Power Steering Gear Inlet/Outlet Hose (Qty: 2) CAUTION: Refer to Power Steering Hose Disconnected Caution . Procedure: Disconnect the power steering gear inlet and outlet hoses from the steering gear. Tip: Keep the area around the power steering gear inlet and outlet hoses and the steering gear openings clean.
5Left Side Steering Gear Bolt (Qty: 2) Tighten: 200 N.m (148 lb ft)
6Right Side Steering Gear Bolt (Qty: 2) Tighten: 100 N.m (74 lb ft)
7Steering Gear Procedure Use the J-44586: remover/installer in order to replace the steering gear seals if necessary. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding . Clean any excess power steering fluid from the vehicle. Measure and adjust the front toe. Refer to Wheel Alignment - Steering Wheel Angle and/or Front Toe Adjustment . Special Tools: J-44586: Power Steering Gear Oil Seal Remover/Installer For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools .
CAUTION
With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components: The steering column The intermediate shaft(s) The steering gear After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has became un-centered, refer to your specific SIR coil's centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil.

Steering Gear Replacement (Recirculating Ball Without LMM)

Special Tools

  1. J-24319-B: Steering Linkage and Tie Rod Puller
  2. J-42640: Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin

For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools .

  1. With the front wheels of the vehicle in the straight ahead position, use the J-42640: Pin in order to lock the steering column.
  2. Remove as much power steering fluid from the power steering fluid reservoir as possible.
  3. Place drain pans under the vehicle.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-364496-S07186948972010063000000) .
  5. Remove the engine shield, if equipped. Refer to «Engine Shield Replacement»(ref-364494-S23909670222010063000000) .
  6. Disconnect the steering hoses from the steering gear.
  7. Disconnect the steering shaft coupling from the steering gear. Refer to «Steering Shaft Coupling Replacement»(ref-364484-S10640076132010063000000) .
  8. Remove the pitman arm nut (1). Discard the pitman arm nut.
  9. Use the J-24319-B: Puller in order to disconnect the pitman arm from the relay rod.
  10. Remove the steering gear bolts (1).
  11. Remove the steering gear from the vehicle.
  12. Transfer the pitman arm if necessary. Refer to «Pitman Arm Replacement»(ref-364573-S07070508002010063000000) .
  1. Install the pitman arm if necessary. Refer to «Pitman Arm Replacement»(ref-364573-S07070508002010063000000) .
  2. Position the steering gear in the vehicle.
  3. Install the steering gear bolts (1).
  4. Tighten the steering gear bolts to 150 N.m (110 lb ft).
  5. Connect the pitman arm to the relay rod.
  6. Install the pitman arm nut (1) and tighten to 62 N.m (46 lb ft).
  7. Connect the power steering hoses to the steering gear. Tighten the hose fittings to 32 N.m (24 lb ft).
  8. Connect the steering shaft coupling to the steering gear. Refer to «Steering Shaft Coupling Replacement»(ref-364484-S10640076132010063000000) .
  9. Install the engine shield, if equipped. Refer to «Engine Shield Replacement»(ref-364494-S23909670222010063000000) .
  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Remove the J-42640: Pin from the steering column.
  12. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to «Power Steering System Bleeding»(ref-364521-S18522497532010063000000) .
  13. Remove the drain pans.
  14. Clean any excess fluid from the vehicle.
  1. Perform the high voltage disabling procedure. Refer to «High Voltage Disabling»(ref-364532-S04350868292010063000000) .
  2. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-364499-S02143103562010063000000) .
  3. Remove the steering shaft coupling bolt (1) at the steering gear.
  4. Separate the steering shaft coupling from the steering gear.
  5. Remove the steering linkage outer tie rod nuts from the steering linkage outer tie rods (1) and discard them.
  6. Separate the steering linkage outer tie rods from the steering knuckles.
  7. Support the steering gear with jackstands.
  8. Remove the steering gear bolts (1) from the left side of the steering gear.
  9. Remove the steering gear bolts (1) from the right side of the steering gear.
  10. Remove the steering gear from the vehicle.
  11. Transfer any parts as needed.
  1. Position the steering gear in the vehicle and support it with jackstands.
  2. Install the steering gear bolts (1) at the right side of the steering gear and tighten to 100 N.m (74 lb ft).
  3. Install the steering gear bolts (1) to the left side of the steering gear and tighten to 200 N.m (148 lb ft).
  4. Connect the steering linkage outer tie rods (1) to the steering knuckles.
  5. Install the new steering linkage outer tie rod nuts and tighten to 60 N.m (44 lb ft).
  6. Connect the steering shaft coupling to the steering gear.
  7. Install the steering shaft coupling bolt (1) at the steering gear and tighten to 47 N.m (35 lb ft).
  8. Install the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to «Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation»(ref-364499-S02143103562010063000000) .
  9. Perform the high voltage enabling procedure. Refer to «High Voltage Enabling»(ref-364532-S08767662232010063000000) .
  10. Perform the power steering control module setup procedure. Refer to «Power Steering Control Module Programming and Setup»(ref-364489-S06487418762010063000000) .
  1. Remove the steering gear boot. Refer to «Steering Gear Boot Replacement (HP2)»(ref-364521-S03282025842010063000000) or «Steering Gear Boot Replacement (Without HP2)»(ref-364521-S15958725972010063000000) .
  2. Disengage the steering linkage inner tie rod washer (1) from the steering linkage inner tie rod.
  3. Rotate the steering linkage inner tie rod (2) counterclockwise while holding the steering gear rack stationary until the steering linkage inner tie rod separates from the steering gear rack (1).
  4. Discard the steering linkage inner tie rod washer.
  1. Install the new steering linkage inner tie rod washer on the steering gear rack.
  2. Apply LOCTITE® 262 or equivalent to the steering linkage inner tie rod threads.
  3. Attach the steering linkage inner tie rod to the steering gear rack and hand tighten it.
  4. Tighten the steering linkage inner tie rod using wrench CH-49009 . See «Special Tools»(ref-364521-S16829705432010063000000) . Tighten: Tighten the steering linkage inner tie rod to 145 N.m (107 lb ft).
  5. Align the new steering linkage inner tie rod washer (1) to the flats on the steering linkage inner tie rod and bend the tabs over the flats.
  6. Install the steering gear boot. Refer to «Steering Gear Boot Replacement (HP2)»(ref-364521-S03282025842010063000000) or «Steering Gear Boot Replacement (Without HP2)»(ref-364521-S15958725972010063000000) .
  1. Remove the steering gear boot. Refer to «Steering Gear Boot Replacement (HP2)»(ref-364521-S03282025842010063000000) or «Steering Gear Boot Replacement (Without HP2)»(ref-364521-S15958725972010063000000) .
  2. Place a pipe wrench on the flats on the steering gear rack (1) next to the steering linkage inner tie rod (2).
  3. Place a wrench on the flats of the steering linkage inner tie rod (2).
  4. Rotate the steering linkage inner tie rod (2) counterclockwise, while holding the steering gear rack stationary, until the steering linkage inner tie rod separates from the steering gear rack (1).
  1. Apply LOCTITE® 262, or equivalent, to the steering gear inner tie rod threads.
  2. Attach the steering linkage inner tie rod onto the steering gear rack.
  3. Place a pipe wrench on the flats on the steering gear rack (1) next to the steering linkage inner tie rod (2).
  4. Tighten the steering linkage inner tie rod (2). Tighten: Tighten the steering linkage inner tie rod to 150 N.m (111 lb ft).
  5. Install the steering gear boot. Refer to «Steering Gear Boot Replacement (HP2)»(ref-364521-S03282025842010063000000) or «Steering Gear Boot Replacement (Without HP2)»(ref-364521-S15958725972010063000000) .
  1. Remove the steering gear. Refer to «Steering Gear Replacement (Hydraulic Rack and Pinion)»(ref-364521-S01455014912010063000000) or «Steering Gear Replacement (Recirculating Ball Without LMM)»(ref-364521-S12670477072010063000000) or «Steering Gear Replacement (Two Mode Hybrid)»(ref-364521-S23943396982010063000000) .
  2. Remove the power steering gear inlet hose retaining plate bolt (1) and the power steering gear inlet hose retaining plate (2).
  3. Loosen both steering gear cylinder pipe fittings (3) on the steering gear (4).
  4. Remove both steering gear cylinder pipes (2) from the steering gear (4).
  5. Remove and discard the steering gear cylinder pipe seals (1) from the steering gear (4).
  1. Inspect the steering gear cylinder pipes for the following items: Cracks Dents Damage to the threads
  2. Replace the steering gear cylinder pipes as needed.
  3. Lubricate and install the new steering gear cylinder pipe seal (1) onto the shorter steering gear cylinder pipe.
  4. Place the non-threaded steering gear cylinder pipe end (2) into the steering gear.
  5. Place the threaded end of the steering gear cylinder pipe (3) onto the steering gear fitting (4). Start the steering gear cylinder pipe fitting (3) but do not tighten it entirely.
  6. Lubricate and install the new steering gear cylinder pipe seal (1) onto the longer steering gear cylinder pipe.
  7. Place the non-threaded steering gear cylinder pipe end (2) into the steering gear.
  8. Place the threaded end of the steering gear cylinder pipe (3) onto the steering gear fitting (4). Start the steering gear cylinder pipe fitting (3) but do not tighten it entirely.
  9. Install the power steering gear inlet hose retaining plate (2) and the power steering gear inlet hose retaining plate bolt (1). Tighten: Tighten the bolt to 12 N.m (106 lb in).
  10. Tighten the steering gear cylinder pipe fittings. Tighten: Tighten the fittings to 34 N.m (25 lb ft).

Steering Gear Pitman Shaft Seal and Bearing Replacement - Off Vehicle

Tools Required

  1. Remove the power steering assist motor. Refer to «Power Steering Assist Motor Replacement»(ref-364521-S21884022962010063000000) .
  2. Mark the position and directional orientation of every fastener on the two harnesses before separating them.
  3. Separate the power steering wiring harness extension harness from the power steering assist motor wiring harness.
  1. When replacing either harness, lay the replacement harness side by side with the old harness and transfer every alignment mark.
  2. After all alignment marks have been transferred, replace every fastener, installing each one in the correct position with the correct directional orientation.
  3. If the alignment marks are lost or not made before separating the harnesses then the following procedure will need to be followed. Otherwise proceed to Step 11.
  4. Measure Distance A on the power steering wiring harness extension harness from the top of the electrical connector and make a mark. Distance A is 11 cm (4.33 in).
  5. Measure Distance B on the power steering assist motor wiring harness from the top of the electrical connector and make a mark. Distance B is 12.5 cm (5 in).
  6. Align the two harnesses by the marks and install the appropriate fastener.
  7. Measure Distance A on the power steering wiring harness extension harness from the previously installed fastener and make a mark. Distance A is 20.5 cm (8 in).
  8. Pull any slack out of the two harnesses, hold them together at the mark that was made, and install the appropriate fastener.
  9. Measure Distance A on the power steering wiring harness extension harness from the previously installed fastener and make a mark. Distance A is 20.5 cm (8 in).
  10. Pull any slack out of the two harnesses, hold them together at the mark that was made, and install the appropriate fastener.
  11. Install the power steering assist motor. Refer to «Power Steering Assist Motor Replacement»(ref-364521-S21884022962010063000000) .
  1. Perform the high voltage disabling procedure. Refer to «High Voltage Disabling»(ref-364532-S04350868292010063000000) .
  2. Remove the air cleaner resonator outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Resonator Outlet Duct Replacement»(ref-364536-S06877126472010063000000) .
  3. Release the power steering assist motor electrical harness connector position assurance tab (3). The connector in the graphic is shown upside down for clarity.
  4. Press down on the connector cam lever lock tab (2).
  5. Push the connector cam lever (3) toward the rear of vehicle.
  6. Separate the power steering assist motor electrical harness retainers from the electronic power steering control module bracket and disengage the electrical connectors (1).
  7. Remove the engine shield. Refer to «Engine Shield Replacement»(ref-364494-S23909670222010063000000) .
  8. Remove the steering linkage shield bolts (1) and the steering linkage shield (2).
  9. Separate the power steering assist motor electrical harness retainers from the frame of the vehicle.
  10. Pull the power steering assist motor electrical harness through the engine compartment to the bottom of the vehicle.
  11. Disconnect the power steering assist motor electrical connector at the torque sensor.
  12. Remove the power steering assist motor bolts (1).
  13. Remove the power steering assist motor and electrical harness (2).
  14. Remove and ensure the power steering assist motor seal (3) is kept protected while out of the vehicle as it will be needed for reinstallation.
  1. Install any new wiring harness retainers as needed.
  2. Position the power steering assist motor (2) and seal (3) to the steering gear.
  3. Install the power steering assist motor bolts (1). Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 13 N.m (115 lb in).
  4. Connect the power steering assist motor electrical connector at the torque sensor.
  5. Route the power steering assist motor electrical harness back through the engine compartment to its previous position and secure the lower part of the wiring harness to the frame.
  6. Install the steering linkage shield (2) and the steering linkage shield bolts (1). Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 12 N.m (106 lb in).
  7. Engage the power steering assist motor electrical harness connectors (1) to the electronic power steering control module.
  8. Ensure the connector cam lever (3) and the connector cam lever lock tab (2) are fully engaged. The connector in the graphic is shown upside down for clarity.
  9. Secure the power steering assist motor electrical harness connector position assurance tab (3).
  10. Install the engine shield. Refer to «Engine Shield Replacement»(ref-364494-S23909670222010063000000) .
  11. Install the air cleaner resonator outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Resonator Outlet Duct Replacement»(ref-364536-S06877126472010063000000) .
  12. Perform the high voltage enabling procedure. Refer to «High Voltage Enabling»(ref-364532-S08767662232010063000000) .
  13. Perform the power steering control module setup procedure. Refer to «Power Steering Control Module Programming and Setup»(ref-364489-S06487418762010063000000) .
  1. Remove the engine shield. Refer to «Engine Shield Replacement»(ref-364494-S23909670222010063000000) .
  2. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.
  3. Remove as much power steering fluid from the power steering fluid reservoir as possible.
  4. Disconnect the power brake booster inlet hose from the power steering pump (3).
  5. Disconnect the power brake booster inlet hose (1) from the power brake booster (2).
  6. Remove the power brake booster inlet hose (1) from the vehicle.
  1. Install the power brake booster inlet hose (1) to the vehicle.
  2. Connect the power brake booster inlet hose (1) to the power brake booster (2). Tighten: Tighten the fitting to 32 N.m (24 lb ft).
  3. Connect the power brake booster inlet hose (1) to the power steering pump (3). Tighten: Tighten the fitting to 32 N.m (24 lb ft).
  4. Clean any excess fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
  5. Install the engine shield. Refer to «Engine Shield Replacement»(ref-364494-S23909670222010063000000) .
  6. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to «Power Steering System Bleeding»(ref-364521-S18522497532010063000000) .
  1. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.
  2. Remove as much power steering fluid from the power steering fluid reservoir as possible.
  3. Disconnect the power brake booster outlet hose (1) from the power brake booster (2).
  4. Disconnect the power brake booster outlet hose (1) from the power steering fluid reservoir (3).
  5. Remove the power brake booster outlet hose (1) from the vehicle.
  1. Install the power brake booster outlet hose (1) to the vehicle.
  2. Connect the power brake booster outlet hose (1) to the power steering fluid reservoir (3).
  3. Connect the power brake booster outlet hose (1) to the power brake booster (2).
  4. Clean any excess fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
  5. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to «Power Steering System Bleeding»(ref-364521-S18522497532010063000000) .

The hydraulic power steering pump is a constant displacement vane-type pump that provides hydraulic pressure and flow for the power steering gear. The hydraulic power steering pump is belt-driven.

The power steering fluid reservoir holds the power steering fluid and may be integral with the power steering pump or remotely located. The following locations are typical locations for the remote reservoir

  1. Mounted to the front of the dash panel
  2. Mounted to the inner fender
  3. Mounted to a bracket on the engine

The 2 basic types of power steering gears are listed below

  1. A recirculating ball system
  2. A rack and pinion system

In the recirculating ball system, a worm gear converts steering wheel movement to movement of a sector shaft. A pitman arm attached to the bottom of the sector shaft actually moves one tie rod and an intermediate rod move the other tie rod.

In the rack and pinion system, the rack and the pinion are the 2 components that convert steering wheel rotation to lateral movement. The steering shaft is attached to the pinion in the steering gear. The pinion rotates with the steering wheel. Gear teeth on the pinion mesh with the gear teeth on the rack. The rotating pinion moves the rack from side to side. The lateral action of the rack pushes and pulls the tie rods in order to change the direction of the vehicle's front wheels.

The power steering pressure hose connects the power steering pump union fitting to the power steering gear and allows pressurized power steering fluid to flow from the pump to the gear.

The power steering return hose returns fluid from the power steering gear back to the power steering fluid reservoir. The power steering return line may contain an integral fin-type or line-type power steering fluid cooler.

In a typical power steering system, a pump generates hydraulic pressure, causing fluid to flow, via the pressure hose, to the steering gear valve assembly. The steering gear valve assembly regulates the incoming fluid to the right and left chambers in order to assist in right and left turns.

Turning the steering wheel activates the valve assembly, which applies greater fluid pressure and flow to 1 side of the steering gear piston, and lower pressure and flow to the other side of the piston. The pressure assists the movement of the gear piston. Tie rods transfer this force to the front wheels, which turn the vehicle right or left.

The 42-volt rack & pinion electric power steering (EPS) system reduces the amount of effort needed to steer the vehicle using the power steering control module (PSCM) to control the power steering motor to maneuver the steering gear. The PSCM also uses a combination of the torque sensor, motor rotational sensor, 42-volt circuit, battery voltage circuit and serial data circuit to perform the system functions. The PSCM monitors vehicle speed from the engine control module (ECM) via the serial data circuit to determine the amount of steering assist needed to steer the vehicle. At low speeds more assist is provided for easy turning during parking maneuvers. At higher speeds less assist is provided for improved road feel and directional stability.

The EPS system consists of the following components

  1. The PSCM
  2. The power steering motor
  3. The power steering motor rotational sensor
  4. The torque sensor
  5. The steering gear (rack and pinion)
  6. The accessory power module (APM)

The PSCM and power steering motor are both serviced separately. The power steering motor is serviced separately from the steering gear; however the power steering motor rotational sensor is serviced as part of the steering motor. The torque sensor is integrated with the steering gear pinion and is serviced as part of the steering gear.
