SERVICE INTERVALS

Note. Trucks and Vans are identified by 2 different emissions control standard classifications: Light Duty and Heavy Duty. Light Duty refers to vehicles up to 8500lbs. GVW; Heavy Duty refers to vehicles over 8500 lbs. GVW.

Check fluid level at 12 month/7500 mile intervals (6000 miles on heavy duty vehicles). Periodic draining and refilling of transmission is not required, with the following exceptions

  1. On vehicles equipped with 5-speed manual transaxle, drain and refill transaxle at 30,000 mile intervals.
  2. On all "S" Series trucks with 4-speed transmission, change transmission fluid after the first 7500 miles and at 35,000 mile intervals thereafter.

CHECKING FLUID LEVEL

Check lubricant level at filler plug hole on side of transmission. Lubricant should be level with bottom of filler plug hole. Add lubricant as necessary to bring to correct level.

Note. If vehicle is equipped with a transaxle, check fluid level when transaxle is cold. If hot, fluid may flow from filler hole when plug is removed. This could result in burned hands or incorrect level readings.

All "S" series trucks, 4-speed manual transmission and the New Process 833 4-Speed Overdrive transmission use Dexron II automatic transmission fluid.

Isuzu 69.5 MM 5-speed transmission and all 5-speed transaxles use 5W-30 engine oil rated SF or equivalent.

All other transmissions use 80W or 80W-90 GL-5 multipurpose gear lubricant or equivalent.

FLUID CAPACITY

The capacities listed in the following chart are approximations only. Correct fluid level should be determined by level at filler plug hole, rather than by amount added.

117 MM 4-Speed8.0 (3.7)

TRANSMISSION REFILL CAPACITIES

All With Shifter on Column

  1. Place gear selector lever in reverse position. Turn transmission shift lever fully clockwise to forward stop. Turn ignition switch to "LOCK" position. Attach primary shift rod to column shift lever with retainer. (Scheme 18)
  2. Slide swivel onto end of shift rod and insert swivel into transmission shift lever. Loosely assemble with bolt and washer. Turn column shift lever down as far as possible and tighten bolt.
  3. Turn ignition switch to "UNLOCK" position and move gear selector lever to neutral. Turn transmission shift lever and cross shaft lever clockwise to full forward positions, them back 1 detent to neutral.
  4. Align gauge holes in column shift levers (3) and insert 1/4" gauge pin through holes. Repeat adjustment procedure with secondary shift rod. Remove gauge pin and check for proper linkage operation. Ignition switch should turn to "LOCK" position with shifter in reverse position only.

All With Floor-Mounted Shifter

  1. Disconnect all shift rods from transmission shift levers. With shift selector lever in neutral position, insert a 1/4" diameter pin through alignment holes in shifter assembly.
  2. Align all shift levers at transmission in neutral position. Rotate transmission output shaft to be sure all levers are in neutral. Loosen lock nuts on shift rod ends and align rod ends with shift lever holes. Install shift rods in levers, tighten lock nuts and install lock pins.
  3. Remove alignment pin and check for proper linkage operation.
