Disconnect negative battery cable at battery. Drain cooling system. Remove all drive belts, coolant hoses and mounting brackets attached to water pump. If necessary, remove fan shroud and position rearward toward engine. Remove fan and pulley. Remove water pump and gaskets.
Installation
Clean all gasket surfaces. Apply 1/8" bead silicone sealer to water pump gasket surfaces. Using new gaskets, install and tighten water pump. Install remaining components in reverse order of removal.
Note. For further information on cooling systems, refer to the COOLING SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS article in the ENGINE COOLING section.
- Disconnect batteries. Remove fan and fan shroud. Drain radiator. If A/C equipped, remove A/C hose bracket nuts. Remove oil fill tube.
- Remove alternator pivot bolt, belt and lower bracket. Remove power steering belt. Remove power steering pump and position aside.
- Remove A/C belt, if equipped. Disconnect by-pass hose and lower radiator hose. Remove water pump bolts, plate and pump.
Apply anaerobic sealant (No. 1052357) to sealing surface of plate so that sealer is wet to touch when bolts are tightened. Reverse removal procedure to complete installation.
Note. For further information on cooling systems, refer to the COOLING SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS article in the ENGINE COOLING section.
- Disconnect negative battery ground cable. Drain cooling system and remove accessory drive belts. Remove fan hub attaching bolts. Remove fan and pulley.
- Remove bolts attaching upper and lower alternator braces to water pump and swing brace aside. Remove lower radiator hose, heater hose, and by-pass hose from water pump. Remove water pump attaching bolts and water pump.
- Transfer heater and by-pass hose fittings to new water pump. Clean all gasket mating surfaces. Apply silicone to gasket surfaces. Reverse removal procedures to complete installation.
- Fill cooling system and start engine. Run engine with radiator cap off until thermostat opens (upper radiator hose gets hot). Top radiator up until coolant level reaches bottom of filler neck with engine idling. Install radiator cap, making sure arrows line up with overflow tube.
Note. For further information on cooling systems, refer to the COOLING SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS article in the ENGINE COOLING section.
