Frame and Underbody: Removal & Installation GMC Sierra III

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-650992-S00449252152014081900000) .
  2. Remove the steering gear skid shield mounting fasteners (1).
  3. Remove the steering gear skid shield (2).
  4. Remove the left steering gear skid shield bracket fasteners (1) and remove the left steering gear shield bracket (2).
  5. Remove the right steering gear skid shield bracket fasteners (4) and remove the right steering gear skid shield bracket (3).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the right steering gear skid shield bracket (3) and tighten the fasteners (4) to 20 (15 lb ft).
  2. Install the left steering gear skid shield bracket (2) and tighten the fasteners (1) to 20 (15 lb ft).
  3. Position the steering gear skid shield (2) on the frame.
  4. Install the steering gear skid shield mounting fasteners (1) and tighten to: Tighten the steering gear skid shield to frame bolts to 20 (15 lb ft). Tighten the steering gear skid shield to steering gear skid shield bracket bolts to 9 (80 lb in).

Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (Four Wheel Drive - Light Duty)

  1. Remove the master cylinder. Perform the following steps: Remove the nuts retaining the master cylinder to the brake booster. Remove the master cylinder from the brake booster. Secure the cylinder away from the booster.
  2. On vehicles equipped with the 4.3L engine, remove the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(ref-651029-S17583717992014081900000) .
  3. On vehicles equipped with the 5.3L engine, remove the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(ref-651035-S07307479992014081900000) .
  4. Raise the vehicle on the hoist. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-650992-S00449252152014081900000) .
  5. Remove the park brake equalizer intermediate cable. Perform the following steps: Remove the nut from the park brake equalizer intermediate cable. Remove the intermediate cable from the equalizer. Depress the retaining tabs that secure the park brake cable to the frame. Pull slightly on the cable from the mounting area in order to provide slack for body movement without binding the cable.
  6. Properly support the body in the area that the mounts will be replaced.
  7. Remove the body mount fasteners (1, 2).
  8. Remove the body mount bolt (3).
  9. Lower the chassis accordingly in order to remove the cushions (4) as necessary.
  10. Properly support the body in the area that the mounts will be replaced.
  11. Remove the body mount fastener (1) and the fasteners (2).
  12. Lower the chassis accordingly in order to remove the cushions (3) as necessary.
  13. Properly support the body in the area that the mounts will be replaced.
  14. Remove the body mount fastener (1) and the fasteners (2).
  15. Lower the chassis accordingly in order to remove the cushions (3) as necessary.
  1. Install the cushions (4) as necessary and raise the chassis accordingly.
  2. Perform the following procedure before installing the body mount fasteners. Remove all traces of the original adhesive patch. Clean the threads of the bolt with denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry. Apply Threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488).
  3. Install the body mount bolt (3) and tighten the fastener (1) to 70 (52 lb ft).
  4. Install the body mount fasteners (2) and tighten to 43 (32 lb ft).
  5. Install the cushions (3) as necessary and raise the chassis accordingly.
  6. Perform the following procedure before installing the body mount fasteners. Remove all traces of the original adhesive patch. Clean the threads of the bolt with denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry. Apply Threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488).
  7. Install the body mount bolt (1) and tighten to 165 (122 lb ft).
  8. Install the body mount fasteners (2) and tighten to 43 (32 lb ft).
  9. Install the cushions (3) as necessary and raise the chassis accordingly.
  10. Perform the following procedure before installing the body mount fasteners. Remove all traces of the original adhesive patch. Clean the threads of the bolt with denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry. Apply Threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488).
  11. Install the body mount bolt (1) and tighten to 165 (122 lb ft).
  12. Install the body mount fasteners (2) and tighten to 43 (32 lb ft).
  13. Install the park brake equalizer intermediate cable. Perform the following steps: Pull rearward on the park brake cable to the original position. Secure the cable retaining tabs to the frame. Install the intermediate cable end to the equalizer. Install the nut to the threaded end of the intermediate cable. Tighten the nut to 4 (35 lb in).
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Install the master cylinder. Perform the following steps: Mount the master cylinder to the brake booster. Install the master cylinder mounting nuts and tighten to 36 (27 lb ft).
  16. On vehicles equipped with the 4.3L engine, install the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(ref-651029-S17583717992014081900000) .
  17. On vehicles equipped with the 5.3L engine, Install the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(ref-651035-S07307479992014081900000) .

  11. Lower the chassis accordingly in order to remove the cushions (4) as necessary.

  2. Perform the following procedure before installing the bolt. Remove all traces of the original adhesive patch. Clean the threads of the bolt with denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry. Apply Threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488).
  3. Install the front body mount bolt (3) and tighten the fastener (1) to 70 (52 lb ft).
  4. Install the front body mount fasteners (2) and tighten to 43 (32 lb ft).
  5. Install the cushions (3) as necessary and raise the chassis accordingly.
  6. Perform the following procedure before installing the bolts. Remove all traces of the original adhesive patch. Clean the threads of the bolt with denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry. Apply Threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488).
  7. Install the mid body mount bolt (1) and tighten to 165 (122 lb ft).
  8. Install the mid body mount fasteners (2) and tighten to 43 (32 lb ft).
  9. Install the park brake equalizer intermediate cable. Perform the following steps: Pull rearward on the park brake cable to the original position. Secure the cable retaining tabs to the frame. Install the intermediate cable end to the equalizer. Install the nut to the threaded end of the intermediate cable. Tighten the nut to 4 (35 lb in).

Assist Step Replacement

  2. Remove the spare tire. Refer to «Spare Wheel Hoist Replacement»(ref-651001-S10866736022014081900000) .
  3. Support the trailer hitch with a suitable jack.
  4. Remove the rear bumper bar fasteners (1) to the trailer hitch (2).
  5. Remove the nuts (1), securing the trailer hitch platform (2), to the right frame rail.
  6. Remove the through bolts (1) along with the retainer plate (2).
  7. Remove the trailer hitch mounting bolt (3) and nut (4), from the right frame rail.
  8. Remove the nuts (1) securing the trailer hitch platform (2) to the left frame rail.
  9. Remove the through bolts (2) and the retaining plate (1) from the left frame rail.
  10. Remove the trailer hitch (4) mounting bolt (5) and nut (3) from the left frame rail.
  11. Remove the 4 remaining mounting nuts (1) and lower the trailer hitch (2).
  1. Position the trailer hitch platform (2) to the vehicle.
  2. Install the trailer hitch platform mounting nuts (1) and tighten to 112 (83 lb ft).
  3. Install the trailer hitch mounting bolt (5) and nut (3) to the left side frame rail and tighten to 160 (118 lb ft).
  4. Install the retaining plate (1) and bolts (2) through the frame rail.
  5. Install the nuts (1) to the through bolts and tighten to 70 (52 lb ft).
  6. Install the trailer hitch mounting bolt (3) and nut (4) and tighten to 160 (118 lb ft).
  7. Install the retaining plate (2) and install the bolts through the right frame rail.
  8. Install the nuts (1) to the through bolts and tighten to 70 (52 lb ft).
  9. Install the rear bumper bar fasteners (1) to the trailer hitch and tighten to 22 (16 lb ft).
  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Install the spare tire. Refer to «Spare Wheel Hoist Replacement»(ref-651001-S10866736022014081900000) .
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(ref-650992-S00449252152014081900000) .
  2. Support the trailer hitch with a suitable jack.
  3. Remove the rear bumper bar fasteners (1) to the trailer hitch (2).
  4. Remove the nuts (1) securing the trailer hitch (2) to the right frame rail.
  5. Remove the frame through bolts (1) and the retaining plate (2).
  6. Remove the trailer hitch mounting bolt (3) and nut (4).
  7. Remove the nuts (1) securing the trailer hitch (2) to the left frame rail.
  8. Remove the frame through bolts (2) and the retaining plate (1).
  9. Remove the trailer hitch mounting bolt (4) and nut (3).
  10. Remove the 2 remaining trailer hitch mounting nuts (1) and lower the trailer hitch platform (2) to the floor.
  1. Position the trailer hitch platform (2) to the vehicle.
  2. Install the trailer hitch mounting fasteners (1) and tighten to 112 (83 lb ft).
  3. Install the trailer hitch mounting bolt (4) and nut (3) to the left side frame rail and tighten to 160 (118 lb ft).
  4. Install the retaining plate (1) and the frame through bolts (2).
  5. Install the nuts (1) to the through bolts and tighten to 70 (52 lb ft).
  6. Install the trailer hitch mounting bolt (3) and nut (4) to the right frame rail. Tighten to 160 (118 lb ft).
  7. Install the retaining plate (2) and the bolts (1) through the right frame rail.
  8. Install the nuts (1) to the through bolts and tighten to 70 (52 lb ft).
  9. Install the rear bumper bar fasteners (1) to the trailer hitch (2) and tighten to 22 (16 lb ft).
