Removal Procedure
| CAUTION | Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components. For Vehicles equipped with OnStar® (UE1) with Back Up Battery: The Back Up Battery is a redundant power supply to allow limited OnStar® functionality in the event of a main vehicle battery power disruption to the VCIM (OnStar®module). Do not disconnect the main vehicle battery or remove the OnStar® fuse with the ignition key in any position other than OFF. Retained accessory power (RAP) should be allowed to time out or be disabled (simply opening the driver door should disable RAP) before disconnecting power. Disconnecting power to the OnStar® module in any way while the ignition is On or with RAP activated may cause activation of the OnStar® Back-Up Battery (BUB) system and will discharge and permanently damage the back-up battery. Once the Back-Up Battery is activated it will stay on until it has completely discharged. The BUB is not rechargeable and once activated the BUB must be replaced. |
- Disconnect the battery negative cable.
- Disable the SIR system. Refer to «DISABLING SYSTEM»(ref-98325-S28987442642001052200000) in SIR.
- Position the steering wheel half way between the upper and lower tilt stops, tilt steering column only.
- Remove the steering wheel. Refer to «Steering Wheel Replacement (With RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) or «Steering Wheel Replacement (Without RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Roll back the shift lever seal from the upper and the lower steering column trim covers.
- Remove the lower steering column trim cover. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the lower steering column shroud. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle.
- Remove the 2 TORX® screws from the upper steering column trim cover. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Lift the steering column upper trim cover to gain access to the lock cylinder access hole.
- Using a bent tip awl, insert the tip into the ignition lock cylinder access hole.
- Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the START position. Using the bent tip awl, push down on the ignition lock cylinder retaining pin.
- Release the ignition lock cylinder to the RUN position.
- Remove the ignition lock cylinder from the lock module assembly by pulling the ignition lock cylinder away from the steering column.
Installation Procedure
- Insert the ignition lock cylinder through the upper steering column trim cover.
- Install the ignition lock cylinder to the lock module assembly by doing the following: Align the positioning slot and locking tab slot on the lock module assembly to the positioning tab and locking tab on the ignition lock cylinder. Push the ignition lock cylinder into the lock module assembly until the locking tab locks against the lock module. NOTE: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the 2 TORX® screws to the upper steering column trim cover. Tighten: Tighten the screws to 1.4 N.m (12 lb in).
- Install the lower steering column trim cover. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers - Assemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Install the shift lever seal to the upper and the lower steering column trim covers.
- Install the steering wheel. Refer to «Steering Wheel Replacement (With RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) or «Steering Wheel Replacement (Without RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to «ACTIVATING SYSTEM»(ref-98325-S12300178652001052200000) in SIR.
- Connect the battery negative cable.
- Perform the Passlock learn procedure.
- Place the multifunction lever in the center or the OFF position. - Remove the horn plunger contact. Refer to «Horn Switch Replacement - On Vehicle (With RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) or «Horn Switch Replacement - On Vehicle (Without RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the steering wheel. Refer to «Steering Wheel Replacement (With RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) or «Steering Wheel Replacement (Without RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the ignition lock cylinder. Refer to «Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement - On Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the steering column upper trim cover.
- Remove the wire harness strap.
- Remove the 2 wire harness straps from the steering column wire harness.
- Remove the steering column wire harness from the instrument panel wire harness.
- Disconnect the gray and the black switch connectors from the steering column connector.
- Remove the 2 TORX® screws.
- Remove the multifunction turn signal/hazard switch assembly.
- Install the multifunction turn signal/hazard switch assembly as follows: Use a small blade screwdriver in order to compress the electrical contact. Move the multifunction switch into position. The multifunction switch electrical contact must rest on the canceling cam assembly.
- Install the 2 TORX® screws. Tighten: Tighten the 2 TORX® screws to 7 N.m (62 lb in).
- Connect the gray and the black switch connectors to the steering column connector.
- Connect the steering column connector to the instrument panel wire harness.
- Install the 2 wire harness straps to the steering column wire harness.
- Install the wire harness strap.
- Install the upper steering column trim cover.
- Install the ignition lock cylinder. Refer to «Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement - On Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Place the lever in the center or the OFF position.
- Install the steering wheel. Refer to «Steering Wheel Replacement (With RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) or «Steering Wheel Replacement (Without RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Install the horn plunger contact. Refer to «Horn Switch Replacement - On Vehicle (With RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) or «Horn Switch Replacement - On Vehicle (Without RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Install the steering wheel inflator module. Refer to «Steering Wheel Inflator Module Replacement (With RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) or «Steering Wheel Inflator Module Replacement (Without RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Enable the SIR System. Refer to «ACTIVATING SYSTEM»(ref-98325-S12300178652001052200000) in SIR.
- Connect the battery negative cable.
- Roll the shift lever boot back until the TORX® head screw is exposed.
- Remove the TORX® head screw.
- Remove the shift lever.
- Install the shift lever.
- Install the TORX® head screw. Tighten : Tighten the TORX® head screw to 22 N.m (16 lb ft).
- Roll the shift lever boot over the TORX® head screw.
- Remove the steering wheel inflator module. Refer to «Steering Wheel Inflator Module Replacement (With RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) or «Steering Wheel Inflator Module Replacement (Without RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the horn plunger contact from the steering wheel.
- Remove the 4 screws that connect the horn contact switch to the steering wheel.
- Remove the horn switch assembly.
- Install the horn contact switch assembly to the steering wheel.
- Install the four screws. Tighten: Tighten the screws until the screws are fully driven and seated. Do not strip the screws.
- Install the horn plunger contact to the cam tower in the steering wheel.
- Install the steering wheel inflator module to the steering wheel. Refer to «Steering Wheel Inflator Module Replacement (With RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) or «Steering Wheel Inflator Module Replacement (Without RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the steering wheel inflator module. Refer to «Steering Wheel Inflator Module Replacement (With RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) or «Steering Wheel Inflator Module Replacement (Without RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the steering wheel horn contact from the steering wheel.
- Install the steering wheel horn contact to the steering wheel.
- Install the steering wheel inflator module. Refer to «Steering Wheel Inflator Module Replacement (With RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) or «Steering Wheel Inflator Module Replacement (Without RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .

- Remove the steering wheel inflator module. - Remove the steering wheel nut.
- Remove the steering wheel using the J 1859-A.

- Align the mark on the steering wheel and steering shaft.
- Install the steering wheel to the steering shaft.
- Install the steering wheel nut. Tighten Tighten the steering wheel nut to 41 N.m (30 lb ft).
- Install the horn switch assembly. - Install the steering wheel inflator module. Refer to «AIR BAG MODULES»(ref-98325-S07418465432001052200000) .

- Remove the steering wheel nut.
- Remove the steering wheel using the J 1859-A .

J 42640 Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin
Note. With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components: The steering column The intermediate shaft(s) The steering gear After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has became un-centered, refer to your specific SIR coil's centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil.
- Mark the relationships of the intermediate shaft to the following components in order to ensure proper installation: The steering column shaft The steering gear input shaft
- Disable the SIR system. Refer to «DISABLING SYSTEM»(ref-98325-S28987442642001052200000) in SIR.
- Install the J 42640 in the steering column lower access hole.
- Remove the upper fan shroud.
- Remove the bolts from the underhood electrical center and set aside.
- Remove the intermediate shaft boot from the cowl.
- Remove the pinch bolt (3) from the intermediate shaft (2) at the steering column shaft (1).
- Remove the intermediate shaft boot from the steering gear.
- Remove the intermediate shaft boot from the vehicle.
- Remove the pinch bolt from the intermediate shaft at the steering gear.
- Remove the intermediate shaft.
- Align the flat on the intermediate shaft with the flat on the steering gear shaft. Observe the marks that were made before the disassembly. Install the intermediate shaft to the steering gear shaft.
- Install the intermediate shaft pinch bolt. Tighten Tighten the intermediate shaft pinch bolt to 41 N.m (30 lb ft).
- Install the intermediate shaft boot over the intermediate shaft. Do not secure the boot to the steering gear.
- Align the flat on the intermediate shaft with the flat on the steering column shaft. Observe the marks that were made before the disassembly. Install the intermediate shaft (2) to the steering column shaft (1).
- Install the intermediate shaft pinch bolt (3). Tighten Tighten the intermediate shaft pinch bolt to 41 N.m (30 lb ft).
- Measure the intermediate shaft angle. For RWD, the angle must be 38-40 degrees.
- Measure the intermediate shaft angle. For F4WD, the angle must be 38-40 degrees.
- Install the intermediate shaft boot to the steering gear.
- Install the intermediate shaft boot cowl with the 4 screws.
- Tighten Tighten the bolts to 5.5 N.m (49 lb in).
- Install the upper fan shroud.
- Remove the J 42640 .
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to «ACTIVATING SYSTEM»(ref-98325-S12300178652001052200000) in SIR.

- Disable the SIR system. Refer to «DISABLING SYSTEM»(ref-98325-S28987442642001052200000) in SIR.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position to unlock the steering wheel.
- Turn the steering wheel 90 degrees clockwise in order to access the rear shroud hole to the steering wheel inflator module.
- Insert a screwdriver and push the leaf spring in order to release the pin.
- Turn the steering wheel 180 degrees counterclockwise in order to access to the remaining rear shroud hole.
- Insert a screwdriver and push the leaf spring in order to release the pin.
- Remove the steering wheel inflator module by tilting the module rearward from the top in order to access the SIR wiring.
- Disconnect the SIR lead wire from the clip on the inflator module.
- Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) and the retainer form the steering wheel inflator module. CAUTION: When you are carrying an undeployed inflator module: Do not carry the inflator module by the wires or connector on the inflator module Make sure the bag opening points away from you When you are storing an undeployed inflator module, make sure the bag opening points away from the surface on which the inflator module rests. When you are storing a steering column, do not rest the column with the bag opening facing down and the column vertical. Provide free space for the air bag to expand in case of an accidental deployment. Otherwise, personal injury may result.
- Remove the steering wheel inflator module
- Install the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) connector position assurance (CPA) and the retainer to the steering wheel inflator module.
- Connect the SIR lead wire to the clip on the steering wheel.
- Install the steering wheel inflator module by pressing the inflator module firmly into the steering wheel. Press on the module until the notched pins in the leaf spring are securely latched. Do not pinch the wires.
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to «ACTIVATING SYSTEM»(ref-98325-S12300178652001052200000) in SIR.

- Insert a screwdriver into each access hole and push the leaf spring in order to release the notched pin that retains the inflator module.
- Turn the steering wheel 180 degrees in order to gain access to the remaining access holes.
- Insert a screwdriver into the remaining holes and push the leaf spring in order to release the notched pin that retains the inflator module.
- Tilt the top of the inflator module rearward to gain access to the SIR wiring.
- Disconnect the SIR lead wire from the clip on the inflator module.
- Disconnect the SIR lead wire from the clip on the steering wheel.
- Disconnect the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer.
- Disconnect the electrical connector. CAUTION: When you are carrying an undeployed inflator module: Do not carry the inflator module by the wires or connector on the inflator module Make sure the bag opening points away from you When you are storing an undeployed inflator module, make sure the bag opening points away from the surface on which the inflator module rests. When you are storing a steering column, do not rest the column with the bag opening facing down and the column vertical. - Remove the inflator module from the vehicle.

- Connect the SIR electrical connector.
- Connect the CPA retainer to the SIR connector.
- Connect the SIR lead wire to the clip on the steering wheel.
- Connect the SIR lead wire to the clip on the inflator module.
- Press the inflator module into the steering wheel firmly enough that the module engages and latches the notched pins in the leaf springs.
- Rotate the steering wheel back into the straight position.
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to «ACTIVATING SYSTEM»(ref-98325-S12300178652001052200000) in SIR.

Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions: Air bag deployment Personal injury Unnecessary SIR system repairs In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines: If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. |
- Disable the SIR system. Refer to «DISABLING SYSTEM»(ref-98325-S28987442642001052200000) in SIR. IMPORTANT: Remove the SIR coil from the steering shaft and let the SIR coil hang freely.
- Remove the SIR coil. Refer to «SIR COIL ASSEMBLY»(ref-98325-S01298590882001052200000) .
- Install the J 23653-SIR to the steering shaft and compress the shaft lock shield (2).
- Remove the lock shield retainer from the steering column shaft.
- Remove the J 23653-SIR from the steering shaft.
- Remove the following parts from the steering shaft: Shaft lock shield (4) Turn signal cancel cam (3)
- Rotate the steering column lock cylinder to the OFF-LOCK position.
- Insert a small screwdriver into the slot on the electronic lock module and push down on the park lock cable locking tab and remove park lock cable (1) from the electronic lock module (column shift only).
- Disconnect the electric park lock (1) electrical connector (2) (floorshift only).
- Unsnap the electric park lock (2) off of the electronic lock module (1) (floorshift only).
- Rotate the key alarm switch connector from the electronic lock module.
- Disconnect the passlock electrical connector from the electronic lock module.
- Disconnect the ignition switch (2) from the electronic lock module using the J-42759 .
- Remove the ignition switch (2) from the electronic lock module (2).
- Let the ignition switch (2) hang freely.
- Remove the electronic lock module (1) mounting screws (2).
- Remove the electronic lock module (1) from the steering column housing.
- Install the electronic lock module (1) to the steering column housing.
- Install the electronic lock module(1) mounting screws (2).
- Install the ignition switch (2) to the electronic lock module (2).
- Connect the passlock electrical connector from the lock module
- Rotate the key alarm switch connector to the electronic lock module.
- Snap the electric park lock (2) onto the electronic lock module (1).(floorshift only).
- Connect the electric park lock (1) electrical connector (2) (floorshift only).
- Install park lock cable (1) to the electronic lock module (column shift only).
- Install the following parts to the steering shaft: Turn signal cancel cam (3) Shaft lock shield (4).
- Install the J 23653-SIR to the steering shaft and compress the shaft lock shield (2).
- Install the lock shield retainer to the steering column shaft.
- Remove the J 23653-SIR from the steering column shaft.
- Install the SIR coil. Refer to «SIR COIL ASSEMBLY»(ref-98325-S01298590882001052200000) .
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to «ACTIVATING SYSTEM»(ref-98325-S12300178652001052200000) in SIR.

J 42640 Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin
Note. Once the steering column is removed from the vehicle, the column is extremely susceptible to damage. Dropping the column assembly on the end could collapse the steering shaft or loosen the plastic injections, which maintain column rigidity. Leaning on the column assembly could cause the jacket to bend or deform. Any of the above damage could impair the columns collapsible design. Do NOT hammer on the end of the shaft, because hammering could loosen the plastic injections, which maintain column rigidity. If you need to remove the steering wheel, refer to Steering Wheel Replacement (With RPO CTF) or Steering Wheel Replacement (Without RPO CTF) .
Note. With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components: The steering column The intermediate shaft(s) The steering gear After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has became un-centered, refer to your specific SIR coil's centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil.
| CAUTION | Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components. For Vehicles equipped with OnStar® (UE1) with Back Up Battery: The Back Up Battery is a redundant power supply to allow limited OnStar® functionality in the event of a main vehicle battery power disruption to the VCIM (OnStar®module). Do not disconnect the main vehicle battery or remove the OnStar® fuse with the ignition key in any position other than OFF. Retained accessory power (RAP) should be allowed to time out or be disabled (simply opening the driver door should disable RAP) before disconnecting power. Disconnecting power to the OnStar® module in any way while the ignition is On or with RAP activated may cause activation of the OnStar® Back-Up Battery (BUB) system and will discharge and permanently damage the back-up battery. Once the Back-Up Battery is activated it will stay on until it has completely discharged. The BUB is not rechargeable and once activated the BUB must be replaced. |
- Disconnect the battery negative cable.
- Disable the SIR system. Refer to «DISABLING SYSTEM»(ref-98325-S28987442642001052200000) in SIR.
- Install the J 42640 in the steering column lower access hole.
- Remove the driver's side knee bolster.
- Remove the driver's side knee bolster deflector.
- Remove the transmission control linkage from the column shift lever.
- Disconnect the 48-way connector wiring harness from the base of the steering column.
- Remove the steering wheel. Refer to «Steering Wheel Replacement (With RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) or «Steering Wheel Replacement (Without RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the intermediate shaft from the steering column shaft. Refer to «Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the 2 lower steering column mounting nuts.
- Remove the 2 upper steering column mounting nuts. Support the steering column while loosening the nuts.
- Disconnect the auto trans shift lock control connector.
- Remove the steering column assembly.
- Install the steering column through the cowl opening and onto the 2 lower studs.
- Raise the steering column into place.
- Loosely install the upper column mounting nuts. Do not tighten the nuts.
- Connect the auto trans shift lock control connector. CAUTION: In order to ensure the intended function of the steering column in a vehicle during a crash and in order to avoid personal injury to the driver, perform the following: Tighten the steering column lower fasteners before you tighten the steering column upper fasteners. Failure to do this can damage the steering column. Tighten the steering column fasteners to the specified torque. Overtightening the upper steering column fasteners could affect the steering column collapse. NOTE: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the lower column mounting nuts . Tighten Tighten the lower column mounting nuts to 30 N.m (22 lb ft). Tighten the upper column mounting nuts to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).
- Install the intermediate shaft to the steering column shaft. Refer to «Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Install the transmission control linkage to the column shift lever. Refer to «SHIFT LINKAGE»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-servicing__shift-linkage) .
- Install the steering wheel. Refer to «Steering Wheel Replacement (With RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) or «Steering Wheel Replacement (Without RPO CTF)»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Connect the 48-way steering column wire harness to the instrument panel wire harness. Tighten Tighten the wire harness connector bolt to 6 N.m (53 lb in).
- Install the driver's knee bolster deflector.
- Install the driver's knee bolster.
- Remove the J 42640 .
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to «ACTIVATING SYSTEM»(ref-98325-S12300178652001052200000) in SIR.
- Connect the battery negative cable.
Disassembly Procedure

J 41352 Modular Column Holding Fixture
- Set the J 41352 into a vise.
- Secure the steering column in the J 41352 .
- Remove the tilt lever (if necessary).
- Remove 2 pan head tapping screws (2) from the lower trim cover (1).
- Remove the lower trim cover (1).
- Remove the TORX® head screw (1) from the upper trim cover (2).
- Remove the lock cylinder (if necessary).
- Remove the upper trim cover (2).
- Remove the trim cover protector (1) to the lower trim cover (2).
Assembly Procedure

J 41352 Modular Column Holding Fixture
- Install the trim cover protector (1) to the lower trim cover (2).
- Install the upper trim cover (2) and secure by using 1 TORX® head screw (1). Tighten Tighten the screw to 1.4 N.m (12 lb in).
- Install the lock cylinder (if necessary).
- Install the lower trim cover (2) and secure by using 2 pan head tapping screws (1). Tighten Tighten the screws to 3.4 N.m (30 lb n).
- Install the tilt lever (if necessary).
- Remove the column from the J 41352.
- Remove the upper and lower steering column trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Slide the shift lever seal (2) up the shift lever (4).
- Remove the shift lever screw (3).
- Remove the shift lever (4).
- Install the shift lever (4) and secure it with a shift lever screw (3). Tighten Tighten the screw to 22 N.m (16 lb ft).
- Install the upper and lower steering column trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers - Assemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the upper and lower steering column trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Pop the wire harness assembly (4) out of the wire harness strap (5). Remove the 2 wire harness straps (3) from the wire harness assembly (4). Remove the wire harness strap (2) from the steering column housing assembly (1).
- Remove the SIR coil assembly by doing the following: Remove the retaining ring (1) using the snap ring pliers. Remove the SIR coil assembly (3). Remove the wave washer (2).
- Align the block tooth on the steering shaft assembly (1) to the 12 o' clock position.
- Place the ignition switch in the lock position. Remove the key.
- Install the wave washer onto the steering shaft assembly.
- If reusing the original SIR coil assembly, refer to «Inflatable Restraint Coil Centering - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard__inflatable-restraint-coil-centering-off) .
- Align the SIR coil assembly (4) with the horn tower on the turn signal cancel cam assembly (1).
- Slide the SIR coil assembly (4) onto the steering shaft assembly (2).
- Firmly seat the retaining ring (3) into the groove on the steering shaft assembly (2).
- Remove and discard the centering tab from the new SIR coil assembly (4).
- Install the wire harness strap (2) into the steering housing assembly (1).
- Install the 2 wire harness straps (3) onto the wire harness assembly (4).
- Install the wire harness assembly (4) into the wire harness strap (5).
- Install the upper and lower steering column trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers - Assemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the upper and lower steering column trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the wire harness assembly (4) from the wire harness strap (5).
- Remove the 2 wire harness straps (3) from the wire harness assembly (4).
- Remove the wire harness strap (2) from the upper steering column housing assembly (1).
- Slide the 2 connectors of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (2) off of the bulk head connector (1).
- Remove the 2 pan head tapping screws.
- Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly.
- Remove the 2 pan head tapping screws (1).
- Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (2).
- Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (2).
- Install the 2 pan head tapping screws (1). Tighten Tighten the screws to 7 N.m (62 lb in).
- Slide the 2 connectors of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (2) onto the bulk head connector (1).
- Install the wire harness strap (2) into the steering column housing assembly (1).
- Install the 2 wire harness straps (3) onto the wire harness assembly (4).
- Install the wire harness assembly (4) into the wire harness strap (5).
- Install the upper and lower steering column trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers - Assemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the upper and lower steering column trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the wire harness assembly (4) from the wire harness strap (5).
- Remove the 2 wire harness straps (3) from the wire harness assembly (4).
- Remove the wire harness strap (2) from the upper steering column housing assembly (1).
- Slide the 2 connectors of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (2) off of the bulk head connector (1).
- Remove the key alarm connector (1) from the lock module assembly (2).
- Remove the 2 tapping screws from the ignition key alarm switch assembly (3).
- Remove the ignition and key alarm switch assembly (3).
- Install the ignition and key alarm switch assembly (3) onto the lock module assembly (2).
- Install the 2 self tapping screws into the ignition and key alarm switch assembly (3). Tighten Tighten the screws to 1.4 N.m (12 lb in).
- Install the key and alarm connector (1) into the lock module assembly (2).
- Slide the 2 connectors of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (2) onto the bulk head connector (1).
- Install the wire harness strap (2) into the steering column housing assembly (1).
- Install the 2 wire harness straps (3) onto the wire harness assembly (4).
- Install the wire harness assembly (4) into the wire harness strap (5).
- Install the upper and lower steering column trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers - Assemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the upper and lower steering column trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the automatic transmission shift lock control actuator from the steering column.
- Use a screwdriver to pry the automatic transmission shift lock control actuator from the steering column jacket assembly.
- Install the automatic transmission shift lock control actuator.
- Install the gear shift lever and put the column in the neutral position.
- Adjust the automatic transmission shift lock control actuator. Pull the tab (1) out on the block side (2) of the automatic transmission shift lock control actuator. Press on the adjuster block (2) to compress the internal adjuster spring to disengage the adjuster teeth. Slide the adjuster block as far away from the solenoid as possible. Lock in place by pushing the tab (1) back in.
- Inspect the automatic transmission shift lock control actuator. The automatic transmission shift lock control actuator must lock the gear shift lever when it is put into the park position. When the column is installed in the vehicle you will not be able to shift the gear shift lever out of the park position without pressing on the brake pedal. The solenoid will be energized. Readjust if needed.
- Install the upper and lower steering column trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers - Assemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the upper and lower steering column trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the shift lever. Refer to «Shift Lever - Disassemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly. Refer to «Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the lock module assembly. Refer to «Electronic Column Lock Module - Disassemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the automatic transmission shift lock control actuator assembly. Refer to «Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Disassemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the 2 oval head 6-lobed socket tapping screws from the shift gate.
- Remove the park lock cable assembly.
- Remove the hexagon flange head bolt.
- Remove the cable shift cam assembly (1).
- Remove the cam bushing (2) from the cable shift cam assembly (1).
- Remove the 3 flat head 6-lobed socket tapping screws.
- Remove the gearshift lever assembly support bracket.
Tools Required
J 41396 Park Lock Cable Pliers
- Install the gearshift lever assembly support bracket and secure by using the 3 flat head 6-lobed socket tap screws. Tighten Tighten the screws to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
- Insert the cam bushing (2) into the cable shift cam assembly (1).
- Install the cable shift cam assembly (1).
- Install the hexagon flange head bolt. Tighten Tighten the screw to 18 N.m (13 lb ft).
- Install the park lock cable assembly and secure by using 2 oval head 6-lobed socket tap screws. Tighten Tighten the screws to 6.5 N.m (58 lb in).
- Install the shift lever clevis (1).
- Install the ball actuator assembly (2).
- Install the hexagon flanged head bolt. Tighten Tighten the bolt to 18 N.m (13 lb ft).
- Place steering column lock cylinder set into the off position.
- Place the shift lever clevis into the park position.
- Press the locking tab on the end of the park lock cable assembly (1) into the slot in the lock module assembly.
- Install the shift lever assembly only. Refer to «Shift Lever - Assemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Adjust the park lock cable assembly (1) by performing the following steps: Use the gear shift lever to place the steering column in the park position. Insert the key into the ignition switch. Place the steering column lock cylinder set in the off or lock position. Remove the key from the ignition switch. Unlock the adjuster ring on the park lock cable assembly using the J 41396 . Pull on the park lock cable until the park lock latch contacts the gear shift lever. Release the park lock cable. Lock the adjuster ring securely in place on the park lock cable assembly using the J 41396 .
- Inspect the park lock cable assembly by performing the following steps. Insert the key into the ignition switch. Place the steering column lock cylinder set in the off or lock position. The gear shift lever must remain locked in the park position. Place the steering column lock cylinder set in the run position. Place the gear shift lever in the neutral position. With the gear shift lever in the neutral position, the steering column lock cylinder set must remain out of the off or lock position. Place the gear shift lever in the park position. Put the steering column lock cylinder set in the off or lock position. Remove the key from the ignition switch.
- Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly. Refer to «Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Install the lock module assembly. Refer to «Electronic Column Lock Module - Assemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Install the automatic transmission shift lock control actuator assembly. Refer to «Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Assemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Install the upper and lower steering column trim covers. Refer to «Steering Column Trim Covers - Assemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the upper steering column housing components. Refer to «Steering Column Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the ignition and key alarm switch assembly. Refer to «Ignition and Key Alarm Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the park lock cable assembly (1) from the lock module assembly. Place the steering column lock cylinder set into the off position. Place the shift lever clevis into the park position. Use a small blade to push against the locking tab on the end of the park lock cable assembly (1). Disconnect the park lock cable assembly (1) from the lock module assembly.
- Remove the 3 pan head tapping screws (1) from the lock module assembly (2).
- Remove the lock module assembly (2) and the lock bolt assembly (4) from the steering column housing assembly (5).
- Remove the lock bolt spring (3) from the lock bolt assembly (4).
Tools Required
J 41396 Park Lock Cable Pliers
- Install the lock bolt spring (3) into the steering column housing assembly (5).
- Position the cutout in the lock bolt assembly (4) at the 6 o'clock position.
- Install the lock bolt assembly (4) into the steering column housing assembly (5).
- Push the lock bolt assembly (4) into the steering column housing assembly (5) until the lock bolt assembly is flush with the steering column housing assembly (5).
- Align the lock module assembly (2) with the steering column housing assembly (5). Install the lock module assembly (2) onto the steering column housing assembly (5). NOTE: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. - Screw the 3 pan head tapping screws (1) into the lock module assembly (2). Tighten Tighten the 3 pan head tapping screws to 7 N.m (62 lb in).
- Place steering column lock cylinder set into the off position.
- Place the shift lever into the park position.
- Press the locking tab on the end of the park lock cable assembly (1) into the slot in the lock module assembly.
- Adjust the park lock cable assembly (1) by performing the following steps: Use the shift lever clevis to place the steering column in the park position. Insert the key into the ignition switch. Place the steering column lock cylinder set in the off or lock position. Remove the key from the ignition switch. Unlock the adjuster ring on the park lock cable assembly using the J 41396 . Pull on the park lock cable until the park lock latch contacts the shift lever clevis. Release the park lock cable. Lock the adjuster ring securely in place on the park lock cable assembly using the J 41396 .
- Inspect the park lock cable assembly by performing the following steps: Insert the key into the ignition switch. Place the steering column lock cylinder set in the off or lock position. The shift lever clevis must remain locked in the park position. Place the steering column lock cylinder set in the run position. Place the shift lever clevis in the neutral position. With the shift lever clevis in the neutral position, the steering column lock cylinder set must remain out of the off or lock position. Place the shift lever clevis in the park position. Put the steering column lock cylinder set in the off or lock position. Remove the key from the ignition switch.
- Install the ignition and key alarm switch assembly only. Refer to «Ignition and Key Alarm Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Install the upper steering column housing components. Refer to «Steering Column Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard__steering-column-jacket-assemble) .

- Remove the retaining ring using the J 23653-SIR .
- Remove the shaft lock shield assembly (1).
- Remove the turn signal cancel cam assembly (2).
- Remove the upper bearing spring (3).
- Remove the thrust washer (4)
- Remove the 4 TORX® screws from the steering column housing assembly.
- Remove the steering column housing assembly from the steering column housing jacket.

- Install the steering column housing assembly onto the steering column housing jacket secured by 4 TORX® screws. Tightens Tighten the screws to 17 N.m (13 lb ft).
- Install the thrust washer.
- Install the upper bearing spring.
- Install the turn signal cancel cam assembly and lubricate with synthetic grease.
- Align the race and upper shaft assembly to the 12 o'clock position.
- Install the shaft lock shield assembly.
- Install the retaining ring using the J 23653-SIR .
- Install the SIR coil assembly. Refer to «Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Disassemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
Inflatable Restraint Coil Centering - Off Vehicle
- Set the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
- Remove the steering wheel inflator module coil assembly.
- Hold the steering wheel inflator module coil assembly with the bottom up.
- Depress the spring lock to rotate the hub in the direction of the arrow until it stops. The coil ribbon should be wound up snug against the center hub.
- Rotate the coil hub in the opposite direction approximately 21/2 turns. Release the spring lock between the locking tabs.
Steering Column Accident Damage Inspection - Off Vehicle
- Check the capsules on the steering column bracket assembly: all must be securely seated in the bracket slots and checked for any loose conditions when pushed or pulled by hand. If not, the bracket should be replaced if bolted to the jacket assembly. If the bracket is welded to the jacket assembly replace the jacket assembly.
- Check for jacket assembly collapse by measuring the distance from the lower edge of the upper jacket to a defined point on the lower jacket. If measured dimensions are not within specifications, a new jacket must be installed.
- Visually inspect steering shaft for sheared injected plastic (1). If steering shaft shows sheared plastic, a new steering shaft must be installed.
- Any frame damage that could cause a bent steering shaft must have the steering shaft runout checked in the following manner. Using a dial indicator at the lower end of the steering shaft, have the steering wheel rotated. Runout must not exceed 1.60 MM.
- Remove the lock module assembly. Refer to «Electronic Column Lock Module - Disassemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly. Refer to «Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Remove the automatic transmission shift lock control actuator.
- Use a screwdriver to pry the electrical automatic transmission shift lock control actuator from the steering column jacket assembly.
- Remove the 3 flat head 6-lobed socket tapping screws (2).
- Remove the park lock cable assembly (3).
- Remove the gearshift lever assembly support bracket (1).
- Remove the steering column seal (3).
- Remove the EVO sensor assembly from the end of the steering shaft assembly.
- Remove the adapter and bearing assembly (2).
- Remove the lower steering shaft (1).
- Install the lower steering shaft (1).
- Install the adapter and bearing assembly (2).
- Install the EVO sensor assembly to the end of the steering shaft assembly.
- Install the steering column seal (3).
- Install the gearshift lever assembly support bracket (1).
- Install the park lock cable assembly (3).
- Install the 3 flat head 6-lobed socket tapping screws (2). Tighten Tighten the screws to 6.5 N.m (58 lb in).
- Install the automatic transmission shift lock control actuator.
- Install the gear shift lever and put the column in the neutral position.
- Adjust the automatic transmission shift lock control actuator. Pull the tab (1) out on the block side (2) of the electrical automatic transmission shift lock control actuator. Press on the adjuster block (2) to compress the internal adjuster spring to disengage the adjuster teeth. Slide the adjuster block as far away from the solenoid as possible. Lock in place by pushing the tab (1) back in.
- Inspect the automatic transmission shift lock control actuator. The automatic transmission shift lock control actuator must lock the gear shift lever when it is put into the park position. When the column is installed in the vehicle you will not be able to shift the gear shift lever out of the park position without pressing on the brake pedal. The solenoid will be energized. Readjust if needed.
- Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly. Refer to «Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
- Install the lock module assembly. Refer to «Electronic Column Lock Module - Assemble - Off Vehicle»(/gmc/sierra/i-1991-2007/remont/steering-column/#steering-column-standard) .
Steering Wheel and Column Description
The steering wheel and column components include the following items
- The steering wheel
- The horn pad or inflator module
- The steering column
The locking, energy-absorbing steering column includes 3 important features in addition to the steering function
- The column is energy-absorbing. The column is designed to compress in a front-end collision in order to minimize the possibility of injury to the driver of the vehicle.
- The ignition switch and the lock are mounted conveniently on the column.
- With the column-mounted lock, the ignition, steering, and gear shifting operation can be locked in order to inhibit a theft of the vehicle.
Note. When the column is removed from the vehicle, actions such as a sharp blow on the end of the steering shaft or shift lever, leaning on the column assembly, or dropping the assembly could shear or loosen the plastic fasteners that maintain column rigidity.
The column may be disassembled and reassembled. In order to ensure the energy-absorbing action, use only the designated screws, bolts, and nuts. Fasten the screws, the bolts and the nuts to the specified torque. Apply a thin coat of lithium grease to all of the friction points when assembling the steering wheel and column.
The following actions could shear or loosen the plastic fasteners that maintain the column rigidity when the column is removed from the vehicle
- A sharp blow on the end of the steering shaft
- A sharp blow on the shift lever
- Leaning on the column assembly
- Dropping the assembly
Ignition Lock System Description
The starting system contains both a mechanical and an electrical neutral safety start systems. The systems rely on a mechanical block as well as an electrical switch. The systems prevent starting the engine in any gear other than PARK or NEUTRAL.
The mechanical block is a wedge-shaped lock bolt added to the ignition switch actuator rod.
The wedge-shaped lock bolt passes through the slots in the shift bowl in order to allow the lock cylinder to turn and start the engine in either the PARK or the NEUTRAL position.
Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Circuit Description
| IMPORTANT | The auto transmission shift lock control portion of the brake pedal position (BPP) switch (terminals E and F) contacts are closed with the brakes released. Depressing the brake pedal opens the switch contacts. Open switch contacts cause the solenoid to de-energize and unlocks the shift lever. The auto transmission shift lock control portion of the park/neutral position and backup lamp switch contacts, terminals B and C, are closed in the PARK position only. The circuit is not active when the key in the OFF position. |
The solenoid locks the shift lever mechanism in the PARK position when the auto transmission shift lock control is energized. The auto transmission shift lock control solenoid returns to the unlocked position when the auto transmission shift lock control is not energized.
The following components are involved in the auto transmission shift lock control circuit
- The park/neutral position and backup lamp switch
- The Brake Pedal Position (BPP) switch
- The auto transmission shift lock control solenoid
Fuse #16, TURN-B/U, supplies battery voltage (12V) to the following components in order
- The ignition switch
- The park/neutral position and backup lamp switch
- The Brake Pedal Position (BPP) switch
- The auto transmission shift lock control solenoid
The solenoid is energized when following conditions are present
- The ignition switch is in the RUN or the START position.
- The shift lever is in the PARK position.
- The brake pedal is released.
The energized solenoid locks the shift lever in the PARK position.
Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Description
The auto transmission shift lock control system prevents the automatic transmission from being shifted out of the PARK position unless the brake pedal is depressed and the ignition switch is in the RUN position. When the brake pedal is depressed, the auto transmission shift lock control solenoid releases a lock paw. The released lock paw enables the movement of the shift linkage and the operation of the shift lever.
When service operations are required, overriding the auto transmission shift lock control is possible. In order to override the auto transmission shift lock control, turn the ignition switch to the OFF (not LOCK) position, and remove the battery voltage from the solenoid.
