Accessory DC Power Control Module Programming and Setup

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event be performed for a complete repair.

Accessory Power Module (APM) Replacement

If the APM is replaced, APM programming must be performed. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Accessory Power Module (APM) Reprogramming

When APM reprogramming must be performed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Ensure the following conditions exist in order to prepare for APM programming or reprogramming

  1. The battery is fully charged.
  2. The ignition switch is in the RUN position.
  3. The Techline equipment cable connection at the data link connector (DLC) is secure.

Program the APM using the latest software matching the vehicle. Refer to up-to-date Techline equipment user instructions.

If the APM fails to program, proceed as follows

  1. Ensure the DLC and APM connections are good.
  2. Inspect the Techline equipment for the latest software version.
  3. Attempt to program the APM. If the APM still cannot be programmed properly, replace the APM.

Accessory Power Module (APM) Setup

This device requires no setup.

Air Conditioning Compressor Control Module Replacement

If the Air Conditioning Compressor Control Module is replaced it must be programmed with the latest operating software and vehicle calibrations. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Air Conditioning Compressor Control Module Reprogramming

Do not reprogram the Air Conditioning Compressor Control Module, unless directed by a service procedure, or a service bulletin.

Reprogram Air Conditioning Compressor Control Module-Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Replace and Program ECU or Reprogram ECU

This ECU does not require SPS programming or any setup procedures.

Introduction

A new auxiliary body control module (XBCM) must be programmed with the latest operating software and vehicle calibrations. Ensure that the following conditions exist in order to prepare for BCM programming

  1. The battery is fully charged.
  2. The ignition switch is in the ON position.
  3. The data link connector (DLC) is accessible.
  4. All disconnected modules and devices are connected.

For some export vehicles the additional procedures below are designed to program the export body control module. Before you start, read these procedures carefully and completely.

Programming the XBCM

IMPORTANTThe vehicle theft system may not operate properly if a replacement XBCM is not properly programmed.

Program the auxiliary body control module. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) for more information.

Enabling the Inclination Sensor - Export

Perform auxiliary BCM special function "Enable inclination sensor".

IMPORTANTAfter programming, perform the following to avoid future misdiagnosis
  1. Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
  2. Connect the scan tool to the data link connector.
  3. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  4. Use the scan tool in order to retrieve history DTCs from all modules.
  5. Clear all history DTCs.

Blower Motor Control Module Replacement

There is no setup procedure that needs to be performed for the blower motor control module on this vehicle

A new body control module (BCM) must be programmed with the latest operating software and vehicle calibrations. Ensure that the following conditions exist in order to prepare for BCM programming

  1. The battery is fully charged.
  2. The ignition switch is in the ON position.
  3. The data link connector (DLC) is accessible.
  4. All disconnected control modules and devices are connected.

Programming the BCM

Note. After the procedure is completed, the personalization settings of the BCM are set to default settings. Inform the customer that the personalization must be set again.

To program and setup an existing or new replacement Body Control Module, perform the following procedure

  1. Access the Service Programming System (SPS) and follow the on-screen instructions. Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/gmc/sierra-2500/2012-2012/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__service-programming-system-sps) .
  2. On the SPS Supported Controllers screen, select BCM Body Control Module - Programming and Setup and follow the on-screen instructions.

Note. After programming, perform the following to avoid future misdiagnosis

  1. Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
  2. Connect the scan tool to the data link connector.
  3. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  4. Use the scan tool in order to retrieve history DTCs from all control modules.

Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the communication interface module.

Communication Interface Module Replacement

Note. It is critical to use the service replacement Communication Interface Module only in the vehicle for which it was ordered. Failure to perform the following procedures will result in a red LED, DTC(s) being set, and limited or incomplete OnStar® services. An OnStar® button press to the OnStar® call center is not required to complete the procedure. It may take up to 24 hours for OnStar® service to become fully activated after performing the procedures. Perform the following procedure only once. Repeat attempts of the procedure may result in a delay of the activation process. To fully activate an OnStar® module, both the setup and activation request procedures must be completed on all vehicles with and without an active OnStar® subscription to insure the unit has been setup properly for the vehicle it has been installed into and also to update the OnStar® with the correct unit information. To initialize the Turn-by-Turn feature, the vehicle must first be driven In open sky condition at speeds greater than 10 mph (16 kph) or more for a minimum of 5 miles (8 km), and perform at least 2 left and 2 right 90 degree turns coming to complete stops prior to each turn. On vehicles up fitted with TTY capabilities, it is necessary to perform a power cycle of the OnStar® Interface Module (OTIM), and toggle the TTY mode after completing the Communication Interface Module installation and setup procedures.

  1. Install EL-49642 SPS programming support tool.
  2. Access the Service Programming System (SPS) and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. On the SPS Supported Controllers screen, select ONSU Onstar® Module Setup and Service Activation and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. At the end of programming, choose the "Clear All DTCs" function on the SPS screen.
  5. The default language for the new Communication Interface Module is English. To change to an alternate language, access the scan tool.
  6. Inform the customer that it may take up to 24 hours for the OnStar® service to become fully activated.

Control Solenoid Valve and Transmission Control Module Assembly Programming and Setup (6L45/6L50/6L80/6L90)

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event be performed for a complete repair. The transmission control module (TCM) is part of the control solenoid (w/body and TCM) valve assembly, and is not serviced separately.

Transmission Control Module (TCM) Replacement

If the TCM is replaced, the following procedures must be performed

  1. TCM Reprogramming
  2. The Reset Transmission Adapts - Refer to «Reset Transmission Adapts»(/gmc/sierra-2500/2012-2012/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-6l806l90-diagnostic-information-and-procedures__reset-transmission-adapts)

TCM Reprogramming

  1. If the TCM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/gmc/sierra-2500/2012-2012/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__service-programming-system-sps) .
  2. Perform the Reset Transmission Adapts - Refer to «Reset Transmission Adapts»(/gmc/sierra-2500/2012-2012/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-6l806l90-diagnostic-information-and-procedures__reset-transmission-adapts) .
  1. Turn the ignition OFF for 30 seconds.
  2. Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF.
  3. Use the scan tool in order to retrieve history DTCs from all modules.
  4. Clear all history DTCs.

Setup for Component Replacement

The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.

If any of the following components are replaced, the Reset Transmission Adapts procedure must be performed

  1. Transmission replacement
  2. Any internal transmission repair
  3. Any speed sensor

Control Solenoid Valve and Transmission Control Module Assembly Programming and Setup (2ML70)

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event be performed for a complete repair. The transmission control module is part of the control solenoid valve assembly, and is not serviced separately.

Note. DO NOT program a control module unless directed to by a service procedure or a service bulletin. If the ECU is not properly configured with the correct calibration software, the ECU will not control all of the vehicle features properly. Ensure the programming tool is equipped with the latest software and is securely connected to the data link connector. If there is an interruption during programming, programming failure or ECU damage may occur. Stable battery voltage is critical during programming. Any fluctuation, spiking, over voltage or loss of voltage will interrupt programming. Install the EL-49642 SPS Programming Support Tool to maintain system voltage. If not available, connect a fully charged 12 V jumper or booster pack disconnected from the AC voltage supply. DO NOT connect a battery charger. Turn OFF or disable systems that may put a load on the vehicles battery such as; interior lights, exterior lights (including daytime running lights), HVAC, radio, etc. During the programming procedure, follow the SPS prompts for the correct ignition switch position. Clear DTCs after programming is complete. Clearing powertrain DTCs will set the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) system status indicators to NO.

To program a replacement or an existing ECU, perform the following procedure

  1. Install EL-49642 SPS Programming Support Tool.
  2. Access the Service Programming System (SPS) and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. On the SPS Supported Controllers screen, select TCM - Programming and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. At the end of programming, choose the "Clear All DTCs" function on the SPS screen.
  5. Perform the «Reset Transmission Adapts»(/gmc/sierra-2500/2012-2012/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-2ml70-diagnostic-information-and-procedures__reset-transmission-adapts) following all transmission related repairs.

Unsuccessful Programming Recovery

In the event of an interrupted or unsuccessful programming event, perform the following steps

  1. DO NOT turn the ignition OFF. Ensure that all ECU, DLC and programming tool connections are secure and the TIS terminal operating software is up to date.
  2. Attempt to reprogram the ECU.
  3. If the ECU can still not be programmed, turn the ignition OFF for at least one minute.
  4. Turn the ignition ON and attempt to reprogram the ECU. The ECU should program. If the ECU still cannot be programmed, replace the ECU.

The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.

If any of the following components are replaced, the Reset Transmission Adapts procedure must be performed

  1. Transmission replacement
  2. Any internal transmission repair
  3. Any speed sensor

Digital Radio Receiver Programming and Setup

Each of the following service procedures requires programming or setup procedures to be performed on the digital radio receiver.

XM™ Activation

Note. In UYS radios, the XM satellite radio (if equipped) is integrated into the radio. If XM was activated in the previous radio, the replacement radio will require no additional activation steps. Customer subscription information is transferred to the replacement radio when a replacement radio is ordered. After replacement of an XM™ receiver, call XM™ radio to deactivate the receiver that has been removed from the vehicle. The vehicle must be parked in view of a satellite within 24 hours after an activation call.

  1. Radio ON, tune to the XM™ channel 0 and record the radio ID. The radio ID will be required for activation of the new receiver.
  2. Call XM™ radio to deactivate the faulty receiver and activate the new receiver. US: 1-800-556-3600 Canada: 1-877-438-9677
  3. Park the vehicle outside in an area with an unobstructed view of the southern sky.
  4. Leave the vehicle outside with the ignition switch in the ACC position and the radio ON, tune to the XM™ channel 1 for 30 minutes to activate XM™ service.
  5. Once activated, the radio will receive the remaining XM™ channels.

Door Lock and Side Window Switch Programming and Setup

After replacing the driver door switch (DDS) or passenger door switch (PDS), perform the programing procedure. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Drive Motor Generator Battery Control Module Programming and Setup

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event be performed for a complete repair. The battery energy control module (BECM) is located inside the drive motor generator battery assembly, and can be serviced separately.

Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) Replacement

If the BECM is replaced, BECM Reprogramming must be performed. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) Reprogramming

When BECM Reprogramming must be performed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Ensure the following conditions exist in order to prepare for BECM programming or reprogramming

  1. The battery is fully charged.
  2. The ignition switch is in the RUN position.
  3. The Techline equipment cable connection at the data link connector (DLC) is secure.

Drive Motor Generator Power Inverter Module Programming and Setup

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.

PIM Replacement

If the drive motor generator power inverter control module (PIM) assembly is replaced, the following procedures must be performed

PIM Reprogramming

When PIM reprogramming must be performed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Insure the following conditions exist in order to prepare for PIM programming or reprogramming

  1. The battery is fully charged.
  2. The ignition switch is in the RUN position.
  3. The Techline equipment cable connection at the data link connector (DLC) is secure.

Program the PIM using the latest software matching the vehicle. Refer to up-to-date Techline equipment user instructions.

If the PIM fails to program, proceed as follows

  1. Insure the DLC and PIM connections are good.
  2. Inspect the Techline equipment for the latest software version.
  3. Attempt to program the PIM. If the PIM still cannot be programmed properly, replace the PIM.

The replacement of some components will require a learn procedure prior to the first drive trip.

If any of the following components are replaced, a Drive Motor Generator Position Sensor Learn Procedure must be performed.

  1. Transmission assembly
  2. Drive motor generator 1
  3. Drive motor generator 2

Drive Motor Generator Position Sensor Learn

IMPORTANTFailure to perform the position sensor learn procedure may result in driveability concerns during the first ignition cycle after repair.

The drive motor generator position sensor learn procedure is performed automatically whenever the ignition is turned OFF while high voltage is enabled. The PIM learns the error, or offset, of each position sensor. When a position sensor is replaced, the PIM will not attempt to learn a new offset until the ignition is turned OFF. Driving the vehicle prior to the PIM learning a new offset may result in poor drive motor generator performance until the learn is completed.

Drive Motor Generator Position Sensor Learn Procedure

  1. Ignition ON, engine OFF.
  2. Observe the battery energy control module (BECM) Contactor System Status display with a scan tool. Insure that the status indicates the high voltage contactor relays are Closed.
  3. Turn the ignition OFF and wait 60 seconds. The drive motor generator position sensor learn procedure is complete.

Electronic Brake Control Module Programming and Setup

Note. DO NOT program a control module unless directed to by a service procedure or a service bulletin. If the ECU is not properly configured with the correct calibration software, the ECU will not control all of the vehicle features properly. Ensure the programming tool is equipped with the latest software and is securely connected to the data link connector. If there is an interruption during programming, programming failure or ECU damage may occur. Stable battery voltage is critical during programming. Any fluctuation, spiking, over voltage or loss of voltage will interrupt programming. Install the EL-49642 SPS programming support tool to maintain system voltage. If not available, connect a fully charged 12 V jumper or booster pack disconnected from the AC voltage supply. DO NOT connect a battery charger. Turn OFF or disable systems that may put a load on the vehicles battery such as; interior lights, exterior lights (including daytime running lights), HVAC, radio, etc. During the programming procedure, follow the SPS prompts for the correct ignition switch position. Clear DTCs after programming is complete. Clearing powertrain DTCs will set the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) system status indicators to NO.

Electronic Brake Control Module Replacement and/or Reprogramming

To program a replacement or an existing EBCM, perform the following procedure

  1. Install EL-49642 SPS programming support tool.
  2. Access the Service Programming System (SPS) and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. On the SPS Supported Controllers screen, select Electronic Brake Control Module - Programming and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. On the SPS Supported Controllers screen, select Electronic Brake Control Module - Setup and follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. On the SPS Supported Controllers screen, select Electronic Brake Control Module - Configuration and follow the on-screen instructions.
  6. On the SPS Supported Controllers screen, select Electronic Brake Control Module - Learn / Setup and follow the on-screen instructions.
  7. At the end of programming, choose the "Clear All DTCs" function on the SPS screen.
  8. If the ABS, Traction Control and/or Stabilitrak indicators are ON after programming and setup, do the following: Disconnect the scan tool from data link connector. Ignition OFF, all access doors closed, all vehicle systems OFF, and all keys at least 3 meters away from the vehicle. It may take up to 2 minutes to power down. Ignition ON, use the scan tool to clear the DTCs.
  9. If the ABS, Traction Control and/or Stabilitrak indicators are still illuminated, operate the vehicle at speeds greater than 16 km/h (10 MPH) to complete the self test. The electronic brake control module should request all indicators to turn OFF.
  10. If indicators remain ON with no DTCs set after the drive cycle, disconnect the battery for at least 60 seconds then reconnect the battery.

In the event of an interrupted or unsuccessful programming event, perform the following steps

  1. DO NOT turn the ignition OFF. Ensure that all ECU, DLC and programming tool connections are secure and the TIS terminal operating software is up to date.
  2. Attempt to reprogram the ECU.
  3. If the ECU can still not be programmed, turn the ignition OFF for at least one minute.
  4. Turn the ignition ON and attempt to reprogram the ECU. The ECU should program. If the ECU still cannot be programmed, replace the ECU.

Electronic Compass Module Programming and Setup

The electronic compass module requires a calibration after the module is replaced, repaired, or as required for proper module operation. Refer to Compass Calibration and Magnetic Variance (without OnStar Only) .

Engine Control Module Programming and Setup (Gasoline Engines)

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.

Note. Record the engine oil and transmission fluid life remaining percentages before proceeding with any programming procedures.

ECM Replacement

If the engine control module (ECM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed

  1. ECM Reprogramming-Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/gmc/sierra-2500/2012-2012/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__service-programming-system-sps) .
  2.   8. Transmission Fluid Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Transmission Fluid Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was replaced.

ECM Reprogramming

Note. DO NOT reprogram a FlexFuel (E85) vehicle while the fuel composition learn function is active. If necessary, drive the vehicle until the scan tool indicates that the fuel composition learn parameter is inactive. Programming with the fuel composition learn active will result in fuel trim DTCs.

  1. If the ECM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/gmc/sierra-2500/2012-2012/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__service-programming-system-sps) .
  2. Engine Oil Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.
  3. Transmission Fluid Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Transmission Fluid Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.

The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.

If any of the following components are replaced, a CKP Variation Learn Procedure must be performed. Refer to Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn , for the V6, Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn , for the V8, or Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn for the Hybrid.

  1. Engine replacement
  2. Any engine repair that disturbs the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor or its relationship with the crankshaft reluctor wheel
  3. CKP sensor

If the throttle body is replaced, a Throttle Learn procedure must be performed. Refer to Throttle/Idle Learn , for the V6, Throttle/Idle Learn , for the V8, or Throttle/Idle Learn for the Hybrid.

Engine Control Module Programming and Setup (LGH or LML)

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.

If the engine control module (ECM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed

Note. Clear any DTCs that may have set after completing the programming procedure.

Enable ECM Reprogramming-Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

The power take-off module (PTOM) requires no programming or setup. When the PTOM is replaced, all programmable parameters will be defaulted back to factory settings. Remote start, if equipped and previously enabled, will have to be re-enabled through the body control module (BCM).

Module Setup

The power take-off module requires that several parameters be setup according to customer requirements. Refer to the table below for available parameters and recommended setting. Refer to the GM Upfitter Integration website, , for bulletins #79 and #80, which have extensive descriptive information about the power take-off system.

Note. When programming the PTO control module be sure to verify the ECM PTO options (stationary, variable or mobile) are synchronized with the PTOM. Example, if the PTOM is set to stationary mode then the ECM must also be set to stationary mode. If the two modules are not synchronized no PTO idle up will occur. Recommended Settings For PTOM Parameters

Fuel Pump Flow Control Module Programming and Setup

If the fuel pump control module (FPCM) is replaced, it must be programmed. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

This ECU does not require SPS programming but does require the following setup procedures after a new ECU is installed

The customer must learn the device they wish to control. This must be done at the device (garage door opener, electric gate, etc.) and cannot be performed at a dealership. Refer to the vehicle owner's manual for programming instructions.

Glow Plug Control Module Programming and Setup (LGH or LML)

Note. The glow plug control module (GPCM) does not allow programming if its temperature is above 60°C (140°F).

The following service procedure requires either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.

GPCM Replacement

If the GPCM is replaced, the following procedures must be performed

  1. Enable GPCM programming - Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/gmc/sierra-2500/2012-2012/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__service-programming-system-sps) .
  2. «Fuel Injector Flow Rate Programming»(/gmc/sierra-2500/2012-2012/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controlsfuel-66l-lgh-lml-repair-instructions) for fuel injector flow rate programming.

If any of the following components are replaced, the Fuel Injector Flow Rate Programming must be performed. Refer to Fuel Injector Flow Rate Programming .

  3. GPCM

Heated Seat Module Replacement

If the heated seat module is replaced or if the module needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

HVAC System Control Module Programming and Setup

Each of the following service procedures may require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the HVAC control module or HVAC actuators.

HVAC Control Module Replacement

If the HVAC control module is replaced it must be programmed with the latest operating software and vehicle calibrations. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

HVAC Control Module Reprogramming

Do not reprogram the HVAC control module, unless directed by a service procedure, or a service bulletin.

Reprogram HVAC Control Module-Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Actuator Replacement

If an actuator is replaced, the following procedure must be performed

  1. Re-Calibrating Actuators-Refer to «Actuator Recalibration»(/gmc/sierra-2500/2012-2012/remont/manual-hvac-system/#hvac-system-manual__actuator-recalibration) for the manual system.
  2. Re-Calibrating Actuators-Refer to «Actuator Recalibration»(/gmc/sierra-2500/2012-2012/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#hvac-system-automatic__actuator-recalibration) for the automatic system.

Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module Programming and Setup

IMPORTANTThe air bag indicator light may remain ON after the body control module (BCM), or inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) is replaced, and during the programming procedure for the BCM until after the procedure is completed. When installing a new SDM, there may be several DTCs set prior to programming. Once programmed, these DTCs should be in history and can be cleared.
  1. Key on, Engine off. Program the SDM, refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/gmc/sierra-2500/2012-2012/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__service-programming-system-sps) .
  2. Key OFF then ON again. If a DTC is set current after programming, follow the diagnostic procedure for that fault. If the programming event was successful, the SIR Malfunction indicator should begin flashing with no current DTCs present.
  3. Use the scan tool to perform the "Setup SDM Primary Key in BCM" Special Function in Module Setup.
  4. Use the scan tool to perform the Setup New SDM special function. If during this procedure a fault is detected, the SDM will not allow this procedure to complete. Repair any existing DTC and then use the scan tool to command the special function again.
  5. Key off then on again. Clear all codes and verify no current faults are present.

Inflatable Restraint Vehicle Rollover Sensor Programming and Setup

  1. Key ON, Engine OFF. With the scan tool perform the Setup New ROS procedure for the inflatable restraint vehicle rollover sensor (ROS).
  2. Key OFF then ON again. Clear all codes and verify no current faults are present.

Compass Calibration and Variance Procedures

When the inside rearview mirror with compass is replaced, the compass must be setup utilizing the Compass Calibration and Magnetic Variance (without OnStar Only) .

Instrument Cluster Programming and Setup

The instrument panel cluster (IPC) must be setup using the service programming system (SPS). Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) . The odometer information will be preprogrammed to the replacement instrument panel cluster.

Memory Seat Control Module Programming and Setup

If the memory seat module is replaced or if the module needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Object Alarm Module Programming and Setup

If the object alarm module is replaced it must be programmed. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Passenger Presence System Programming and Setup

This device requires no programming or setup.

Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) Replacement and Setup

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.

If the power steering control module (PSCM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed in the following order

  1. PSCM reprogramming-Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/gmc/sierra-2500/2012-2012/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__service-programming-system-sps) .
  2. Steering Position/Torque Sensor Calibration

Power Steering Motor or Torque Sensor Replacement

IMPORTANTThe power steering motor is serviced separately from the steering gear. However, the torque sensor is serviced as part of the steering gear assembly.

After replacing either the steering gear assembly or the power steering motor, only the Steering Position/Torque Sensor Calibration procedure must be performed. Certain steering symptoms can be corrected by performing the Steering Position/Torque Sensor Calibration procedure such as

  1. Poor, or uneven return to center
  2. Poor, or uneven on center feel

Steering Position/Torque Sensor Calibration

IMPORTANTSince there is no steering assist while performing this procedure, the procedure might be easier to accomplish if the vehicle is raised slightly off the ground using a hoist. Follow all on-screen instructions displayed on the scan tool in order of appearance.
  1. Install the scan tool.
  2. Engine ON.
  3. With the scan tool select Chassis, Power Steering Control Module and then Special Functions.
  4. Center the steering wheel.
  5. Turn the steering wheel 90 degrees from center to the right, and 90 degrees from center to the left, return the steering wheel to center.
  6. With the steering wheel centered, remove hands from the steering wheel and then press the calibrate key. The steering wheel may vibrate slightly for approximately 2-3 seconds.
  7. Wait until the scan tool screen displays "Calibration Complete". If the scan tool displays "Procedure Incomplete", repeat the calibration procedure.
  8. Press the exit key. Verify there is no uneven steering feel by turning the steering wheel from left to right. If the steering feel seems uneven as the steering wheel is turned in either direction, repeat the calibration procedure.
  9. Use the scan tool in order to clear any PSCM DTCs.
  10. Turn OFF the ignition.

Radio Programming and Setup

Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the radio.

Radio Replacement

Uplevel and Navigation Radios

Setup is completed using the Service Programming System (SPS). Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Base Radios

No programming or setup procedures are required. The radio learns the correct VIN sequence upon the initial power-up ignition cycle after replacement.

Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Programming and Setup

IMPORTANTWhen replacing the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR), the tire pressure monitoring (TPM) information can be learned to the new RCDLR in one of two ways. These two methods are reflected in the selections below. Only choose one of the methods; it is not required to do both methods when replacing the RCDLR. If you choose to perform the Copy and Paste TPM Information procedure, Step 1 must be performed BEFORE removing the old RCDLR. This procedure requires that specific TPM information be extracted from the old RCDLR prior to its removal.

Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Replacement - Copy and Paste TPM Information

This procedure will learn the TPM information to the new RCDLR using the Copy and Paste function on the scan tool. This procedure will extract the TPM Tire Type information as well as the sensor data from the existing RCDLR prior to its replacement and store this information in the scan tool. After RCDLR replacement and SPS programming, the tire type and sensor data stored in the scan tool is written to the new RCDLR, negating the need to perform the tire type setup and sensor learn procedure.

This procedure should be considered as the first programming choice when replacing an RCDLR. The Copy and Paste procedure eliminates the possibility of incorrectly inputting the tire type or learning stray TPM sensors.

  1. Using a scan tool, navigate to the Copy and Paste TPM Information procedure and copy the existing TPM information from the RCDLR using the outline below. Follow the on-screen instructions after selecting Step 1: Vehicle Control Systems Module Setup Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Copy and Paste TPM Information Step 1
  2. At this point, install the new RCDLR.
  3. Program the RCDLR - Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/gmc/sierra-2500/2012-2012/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__service-programming-system-sps) .
  4. Using a scan tool, navigate to the Copy and Paste TPM Information procedure to paste the stored TPM information using the outline below. Follow the on-screen instructions after selecting Step 2: Vehicle Control Systems Module Setup Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Copy and Paste TPM Information Step 2
  5. Program the keyless entry transmitters - Refer to «Remote Control Door Lock Transmitter Learn»(/gmc/sierra-2500/2012-2012/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#keyless-entry-system-and-remote-functions) .

Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Replacement - TPM Sensor Learn

This procedure will learn TPM information to the new RCDLR by manually inputting the tire type using the scan tool and performing the TPM sensor learn. This procedure should be performed if the above Copy and Paste procedure can not be completed. An example of this would be an RCDLR that is unable to communicate with the scan tool and is required to be replaced.

  1. RCDLR Programming-Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/gmc/sierra-2500/2012-2012/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems__service-programming-system-sps) .
  2. Keyless Entry Transmitter Programming-Refer to «Remote Control Door Lock Transmitter Learn»(/gmc/sierra-2500/2012-2012/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#keyless-entry-system-and-remote-functions) .
  3. Tire Type Setup: Install a scan tool. Select Remote Control Door Lock Receiver under Module Setup in the Vehicle Control System menu. Select Tire Type/Pressure Selection. Follow the on-sceen instructions.
  4. Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensor Learn-Refer to «Tire Pressure Indicator Sensor Learn»(/gmc/sierra-2500/2012-2012/remont/warning-system/#tire-pressure-monitoring-system__tire-pressure-indicator-sensor-learn) .

Seat Climate Control Module Programming and Setup

This device requires no programming or setup.

Serial Data Gateway Module Programming and Setup

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event be performed for a complete repair.

Serial Data Gateway Module (SDGM) Replacement

If the SDGM is replaced, SDGM programming must be performed. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Serial Data Gateway Module (SDGM) Reprogramming

When SDGM reprogramming must be performed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Ensure the following conditions exist in order to prepare for SDGM programming or reprogramming

  1. The battery is fully charged.
  2. The ignition switch is in the RUN position.
  3. The Techline equipment cable connection at the data link connector (DLC) is secure.

Program the SDGM using the latest software matching the vehicle. Refer to up-to-date Techline equipment user instructions.

If the SDGM fails to program, proceed as follows

  1. Ensure the DLC and SDGM connections are good.
  2. Inspect the Techline equipment for the latest software version.
  3. Attempt to program the SDGM. If the SDGM still cannot be programmed properly, replace the SDGM.

Serial Data Gateway Module (SDGM) Setup

This device requires no setup.

Service Programming System (SPS)

For step-by-step control module programming instructions, please refer to the techline information system (TIS) terminal.

Review the information below to ensure proper programming protocol.

Note. DO NOT program a control module unless you are directed by a service procedure or you are directed by a General Motors service bulletin. Programming a control module at any other time will not permanently correct a customers concern. It is essential that the TIS terminal, MDI, and/or Scan Tool, is equipped with the latest software before performing service programming. Due to the time requirements of programming a controller, install EL-49642 SPS Programming Support Tool to maintain system voltage. Stable battery voltage is critical during programming. Any fluctuation, spiking, over voltage or loss of voltage will interrupt programming. If the above tool is not available, DO NOT connect a battery charger, connect a fully charged 12V jumper or booster pack disconnected from the AC voltage supply. Some modules will require additional programming/setup events to be performed before or after programming. Some vehicles may require the use of a CANDi or MDI module for programming. Review the appropriate service information for these procedures. DTCs may set during programming. Clear DTCs after programming is complete. Clearing powertrain DTCs will set the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) system status indicators to NO.

Ensure the following conditions are met before programming a control module

  1. Vehicle system voltage: There is not a charging system concern. All charging system concerns must be repaired before programming a control module. Battery voltage is greater than 12 volts but less than 16 volts. The battery must be fully charged before programming the control module. Turn OFF or disable any system that may put a load on the vehicles battery, such as the following components: Interior lights Exterior lights including daytime running lights (DRL)-Applying the parking brake, on most vehicles, disables the DRL system Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems Engine cooling fans Radio, etc.
  2. The ignition switch must be in the proper position. SPS prompts you to turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. DO NOT change the position of the ignition switch during the programming procedure, unless instructed to do so.
  3. Make certain all tool connections are secure, including the following components and circuits: Scan Tool The RS-232 communication cable port The connection at the data link connector (DLC) The voltage supply circuits MDI The USB, Ethernet or Wireless communication port The connection at the data link connector (DLC)
  4. DO NOT disturb the tool harnesses while programming. If an interruption occurs during the programming procedure, programming failure or control module damage may occur.

In the event of an interrupted or unsuccessful programming event, perform the following steps

  1. DO NOT turn the ignition OFF. Ensure that all control module and DLC connections are secure and the TIS terminal operating software is up to date.
  2. Attempt to reprogram the control module.
  3. If the control module can still not be programmed, turn the ignition OFF for at least one minute.
  4. Turn the ignition ON and attempt to reprogram the control module. The control module should program. If the control module still cannot be programmed, replace the control module.

After successfully programming the control module, ensure that all post programming procedures are performed; refer to Control Module References for the appropriate control module Programming and Setup document for any required procedures.

Sunroof Control Module Programming and Setup

Theft Deterrent Module Programming and Setup

  1. Connect a scan tool to the vehicle in the Pass-thru arrangement.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Ensure that all power consuming devices are turned OFF on the vehicle.
  4. On the Techline Terminal, select Service Programming System and follow the Techline Terminal on-screen instructions. Go to TDM Theft Deterrent Module from the controller list and select the appropriate on-screen calibration options.
  5. After the programming has completed, turn the ignition OFF for 30 seconds.
  6. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
  7. On the Techline Terminal, go to V.T.D. Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn from the controller list and select Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn, ECM or PK3 Replaced. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  8. At this point the scan tool must remain connected for the duration of the 10-minute relearn procedure.
  9. Observe the scan tool, after approximately 12 minutes the scan tool will display "Programming Successful, Turn OFF Ignition". The vehicle is now ready to relearn the key information and/or the passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
  10. Turn OFF the ignition and wait 2 minutes.
  11. With a master vehicle key, turn the ignition to the RUN position for 15 seconds, then start the vehicle. The TDM and ECM have now relearned the pre-release password and the challenge/response data.
  12. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs.

Trailer Brake Control Module Programming and Setup

If the Trailer Brake Control Module or the combination Fuel Pump/Trailer Brake Control Module is replaced or needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) . The calibrations for either of these modules are accessed through the FPCM Fuel Pump Control Module selection in the supported controllers list. The Trailer Brake Control Module is not listed as a separate choice. Once the Fuel Pump Control Module is selected, the SPS system will download the proper calibration for the vehicle based on the VIN entered.

Transfer Case Shift Control Module Programming and Setup (MP 1625/26-NQF)

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.

Transfer Case Shift Control Module Replacement

If the transfer case shift control module is replaced, the transfer case shift control module reprogramming procedure and the Transfer Case High/Low Clutch Reset procedures must be performed. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS)

Transfer Case Shift Control Module Reprogramming

If the transfer case shift control module needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Ensure that the following conditions exist in order to prepare for transfer case shift control module programming or reprogramming

  1. The battery is fully charged.
  2. The ignition switch is in the RUN position.
  3. The Techline equipment cable connection at the data link connector (DLC) is secure.

Program the transfer case shift control module using the latest software matching the vehicle. Refer to up-to-date Techline equipment user instructions.

If the transfer case shift control module fails to program, proceed as follows

  1. Ensure that the transfer case shift control module connection is OK.
  2. Inspect the Techline equipment for the latest software version.
  3. Attempt to program the transfer case shift control module. If the transfer case shift control module still cannot be programmed properly, replace the transfer case shift control module.

Transfer Case Shift Control Module Setup

Perform the Transfer Case High/Low Clutch Retest (Motor Learn Procedure). Refer to Transfer Case High/Low Clutch Reset for NQF.

Transfer Case Shift Control Module Programming and Setup (MP 3023/3024-NQH)

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.

If the transfer case shift control module is replaced, the transfer case shift control module reprogramming procedure and the Transfer Case High/Low Clutch Reset procedures must be performed. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

If the transfer case shift control module needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Ensure that the following conditions exist in order to prepare for transfer case shift control module programming or reprogramming

  1. The battery is fully charged.
  2. The ignition switch is in the RUN position.
  3. The Techline equipment cable connection at the data link connector (DLC) is secure.

Program the transfer case shift control module using the latest software matching the vehicle. Refer to up-to-date Techline equipment user instructions.

If the transfer case shift control module fails to program, proceed as follows

  1. Ensure that the transfer case shift control module connection is OK.
  2. Inspect the Techline equipment for the latest software version.
  3. Attempt to program the transfer case shift control module. If the transfer case shift control module still cannot be programmed properly, replace the transfer case shift control module.

Perform the Transfer Case High/Low Clutch Retest (Motor Learn Procedure). Refer to Transfer Case High/Low Clutch Reset for NQH.

Transmission Auxiliary Fluid Pump Control Module Programming and Setup

This device requires no programming or setup.

Transmission Control Module Programming and Setup (Allison)

The following service procedures require a programming and a setup event be performed for a complete repair.

If the TCM is replaced, TCM Reprogramming must be performed. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

If programming is required, perform the following procedure. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Ensure the following conditions exist in order to prepare for TCM programming or reprogramming

  1. The battery is fully charged.
  2. The ignition switch is in the RUN position.
  3. Ensure that the TCM has the latest software version.
  4. The Techline equipment cable connection at the data link connector (DLC) is secure.
  5. Inspect the Techline equipment for the latest software version.

Program the TCM using the latest software matching the vehicle. Refer to up-to-date Techline equipment user instructions.

If the TCM fails to program, proceed as follows

  1. Ensure the TCM connection is good.
  2. Inspect the Techline equipment for the latest software version.
  3. Attempt to program the TCM. If the TCM still cannot be programmed properly, replace the TCM.

TCM Setup

Refer to FastLearn Procedure to complete repair.

Transmission Control Module Programming and Setup (4L60-E/4L65-E/4L70-E)

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event be performed for a complete repair.

If the TCM is replaced, TCM Reprogramming must be performed. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

If the TCM is reprogrammed, TCM Reprogramming must be performed. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Ensure the following conditions exist in order to prepare for TCM programming or reprogramming

  1. The battery is fully charged.
  2. The ignition switch is in the RUN position.
  3. The Techline equipment cable connection at the data link connector (DLC) is secure.

Program the TCM using the latest software matching the vehicle. Refer to up-to-date Techline equipment user instructions.

If the TCM fails to program, proceed as follows

  1. Ensure the TCM connection is good.
  2. Inspect the Techline equipment for the latest software version.
  3. Attempt to program the TCM. If the TCM still cannot be programmed properly, replace the TCM.

This device requires no setup.
