DESCRIPTION
Wiper system consists of a 2-speed, positive-park, permanent-magnet motor. Combined wiper and washer switch, mounted on end of multifunction switch (turn signal) lever, controls system. Wiper motor and transmission assembly is mounted to tube frame under air inlet screen. Vehicle is equipped with a pulse wipe delay. Power for wiper/washer system is provided by a 25-amp WIPER fuse located in the fuse block. Wiper motor is protected by an internal, self-resetting circuit breaker. Washer motor is mounted on reservoir located in engine compartment.
OPERATION
Electronic circuit board controls all timing and washer commands. When PUSH washer switch is pressed for more than one second, washer fluid is sprayed on windshield as long as washer switch is held. Wiper will operate for 6 seconds after washer switch is released. Wiper motor operates in either low or high speed, depending on switch position. Rotating switch to DELAY position operates wiper intermittently, and delay can be varied from zero to 43 seconds by rotating switch back and forth. Immediate wiping can be activated by rotating switch to MIST position. Wiping action will continue as long as switch is held.
ADJUSTMENTS
Do not interchange left and right wiper arms. Wiper arms are stamped LH and RH. Install wiper arms onto drive shafts while measuring distance between wiper blade tip and air inlet grille panel. Distance should be 2.75" (70 mm.) for left wiper arm and 2.56" (65 mm.) for right wiper arm while holding measuring device perpendicular to wiper blade.
SYSTEM CHECK
Note. When performing following checks, maintain some moisture on front windshield so that wiper motor does not overheat.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Leave wiper switch in OFF position. Depress washer switch 2-4 seconds and release. Wipers should operate at low speed and washers should spray as long as washer switch is held in ON position. After releasing washer switch, washers should stop and wipers should return to park position after 2-4 sweeps.
- Move wiper switch to DELAY position. Activate delay time by turning wiper switch through delay range. Wipers should make one complete sweep, then pause for 0-25 seconds before making next sweep.
- Ensure wiper switch is in DELAY position. Hold washer switch on for 1-2 seconds. Washer switch should spray as long as washer switch is held in ON position. Wipers should run at low speed during spray period, continue for 2-4 sweeps after spray cycle, and then return to delay mode.
- Move wiper switch to LOW position. Wipers should run continuously at low speed. Move wiper switch to HIGH position. Wipers should run continuously at high speed.
- Move wiper switch to OFF position. Wipers should return to park position at low speed. Move wiper switch to MIST position. Wipers should make one complete sweep and return to park position. If wipers do not function properly, perform «PRELIMINARY INSPECTION»(/gmc/savana/i-1996-2002/remont/wiperwasher-systems/#wiper-system-and-washer-system__preliminary-inspection) .
PRELIMINARY INSPECTION
Check the following items prior to performing any test procedures
- Check WIPER fuse (No. 11).
- Check chassis ground point located behind left kick panel, near fuse box.
- Check wiper arm and blade condition.
- If some (but not all) delay or low speeds are inoperative, replace multifunction switch.
- Ensure aftermarket equipment is not improperly installed and interfering with operation of wiper/washer system. Correct any obvious problems before continuing testing. If problem still exists, identify wiper/washer symptom and perform appropriate system test. See «SYMPTOM INDEX»(/gmc/savana/i-1996-2002/remont/wiperwasher-systems/#wiper-system-and-washer-system) under SYSTEM TESTS.
SYSTEM TESTS
| WARNING | Vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). Air bag system must be disabled before servicing any steering column component. Disabling system will prevent accidental air bag deployment, resulting in possible serious injury or property damage. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. |
Note. Before performing any SYSTEM TESTS, perform SYSTEM CHECK under TROUBLESHOOTING.
