DESCRIPTION
Remote keyless entry system allows driver to operate vehicle door locks and endgate window release from outside vehicle using a hand-held transmitter. Keyless entry receiver detects and decodes signals and issues signals to control door locks and endgate window release. System uses existing power door lock components.
OPERATION
Transmitter must be within 33 feet (10 meters) of vehicle for receiver to detect coded signal. When LOCK button is depressed once, transmitter and keyless entry receiver receives a signal with a valid vehicle access code, lock function sequence is performed. Keyless entry receiver will lock all doors.
Unlock function is separated into 2 operations depending on how UNLOCK button is pressed on transmitter. If UNLOCK button is depressed once, only left door is unlocked. If UNLOCK button is depressed twice within 1-5 seconds, all other doors will be unlocked.
When REAR 2X button is depressed 2 times, remote control door lock receiver unlocks rear door only. When any UNLOCK button is depressed, interior dome lights are turned on for 40 seconds, or until ignition switch is turned ON.

TRANSMITTER
- Ground terminal No. 4 (Black wire) to terminal No. 8 (Black/White wire) of Data Link Connector (DLC) located under lower left side of instrument panel. (Scheme 69) Receiver will respond by locking and unlocking all doors. Press LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously on first transmitter to be programmed. Receiver will respond by locking/unlocking all doors.
- Press both LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously on all transmitters to be programmed (up to 4). Receiver will again respond by locking/unlocking all doors. Remove ground jumper from DLC terminals No. 4 and 8. Transmitter operation can be verified by locking and unlocking doors and automatically activating liftgate release.
Scheme 69
RESYNCHRONIZATION
- Resynchronization may be necessary due to security methods used by Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) system. Transmitters do not send the same signal twice. Receiver will not respond to a signal it has been sent previously, preventing recording and playback of transmitter signal. Resynchronization will be necessary if the following occurs: Transmitter battery is very weak. Transmitter battery is changed. Vehicle battery is replaced. Vehicle battery is disconnected. Transmitter buttons have been pushed 256 times out of range of receiver. To resynchronize transmitter to receiver, stand within 5 feet to vehicle, simultaneously depress and hold LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on transmitter for 7 seconds. Door locks should cycle to confirm resynchronization.
PRELIMINARY INSPECTION
Check PWR ACCY fuse (25-amp). Ensure all electrical connectors, circuits and grounds are good. Try second transmitter. If second transmitter operates system, replace battery in first transmitter. Ensure transmitter battery terminals are clean and making good contact. Ensure power door locks system is operational. If power door locks do not function properly, repair as necessary. See POWER DOOR LOCKS article.
SYSTEM TESTS
Note. To prevent damage to terminal, connector Test Adaptor Kit (J 35616-A) must be used whenever a diagnostic procedure requires checking or probing a terminal. To locate and identify terminals, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .
