MODEL IDENTIFICATION
DESCRIPTION
The transmission shift interlock system prevents driver from moving gear selector from Park unless ignition switch is turned to ON position, and prevents ignition key from being removed until gear selector is returned to Park. On models equipped with Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) solenoid, gear selector cannot be moved from Park while ignition is on until brake pedal is depressed. This prevents accidental movement of gear selector from Park while engine is running. BTSI solenoid is located in steering column or center console.
BRAKE TRANSMISSION INTERLOCK SOLENOID
Note. Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) solenoid may also be known as shift interlock actuator.
Gear selector cannot be moved from Park without depressing brake pedal if ignition is on. When pressure is applied to brake pedal, BTSI solenoid is de-energized to release gear selector from Park. Brakelight switch interrupts circuit to mechanically unlock gear selector by de-energizing BTSI solenoid. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
PARK LOCK CABLE
Gear selector is locked in Park when ignition switch is in LOCK position. With ignition on, gear selector is allowed movement to desired position. Ignition key cannot be removed until gear selector is returned to Park. Park lock cable is located on steering column. (Scheme 6)

TROUBLE SHOOTING
Note. Individual component testing procedures are not available from manufacturer. For component location, wire color, circuit and terminal identification, or to identify model specific components within shift interlock system, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .
VISUAL INSPECTION
Note. Diagnosis of shift interlock system should begin with a general visual inspection. Each model is similar in function, but may be equipped with a variety of components depending upon application. Before beginning any diagnosis, refer to appropriate wiring diagram to become familiar with the system and for use as a guide to pinpoint areas of concern. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
Inspect mechanical operation of ignition switch, gear selector assembly, shift cable/linkage and internal transmission linkage. Adjust or repair as necessary. See ADJUSTMENTS . If no mechanical problems are found, inspect all electrical components while referring to appropriate wiring diagram as a guide. Ensure all system electrical harness connections are tight and free of corrosion. Check for misrouted wires and damaged components. Ensure system fuses are good and appropriate circuits are properly grounded. Repair as necessary. Once system passes visual inspection, check system operation. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK
Confirm the following system operation
- With ignition switch in LOCK position, gear selector should be locked in Park.
- With gear selector in Park, ignition switch should be allowed movement from LOCK position to any other position, and then back to LOCK position. Ignition key should be removable while in LOCK position.
- With ignition switch in ON position, gear selector should be allowed movement from Park. Models equipped with BTSI solenoid require that brake pedal be depressed for this operation.
- With ignition switch in ON position and gear selector in any position other than Park, ignition key is non-removable. Ignition key is removable only when gear selector is returned to Park.
If shift interlock system operates as specified, system is functioning properly at this time. If system does not operate as specified, diagnose by symptom. See SYMPTOM TESTS .
SYMPTOM TESTS
Note. Symptom testing is not available for "P" series vehicles. Use appropriate wiring diagram to aid in diagnosis. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
BTSI CONTROL INOPERATIVE
Note. Ensure Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch is adjusted properly. See appropriate AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SERVICING article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Verify system operation after performing any repairs. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
