Silicone Fluid Leaks
Small fluid leaks that are present around the bearing assembly do not affect the fan clutch operation. If leakage appears extensive, replace the fan clutch. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement .
Draining Procedure
Tools Required
- J 26568 Coolant and Battery Tester
- J 38185 Hose Clamp Pliers
| WARNING | To avoid being burned, do not remove the radiator cap or surge tank cap while the engine is hot. The cooling system will release scalding fluid and steam under pressure if radiator cap or surge tank cap is removed while the engine and radiator are still hot. |
| CAUTION | If the procedure below is not followed a low or high coolant level condition and/or vehicle damage could result. |
Important: Draining the cooling system with the pressure cap installed will siphon the coolant from the overflow tank.
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Place a drain pan under the lower radiator hose.
- Using the J 38185 , reposition the lower radiator hose clamp.
- Remove the lower radiator hose from the radiator.
- Drain the cooling system.
- Remove the coolant pressure cap.
- If a complete engine block drain is required, remove the engine block drain plug.
- Inspect the coolant.
- Follow the appropriate procedure based on the condition of the coolant. Normal in appearance - follow the filling procedure. Discolored - follow the flush procedure. Refer to «Flushing»(ref-173517-S09324028642005031700000) .
Scheme 97
- Install the lower radiator hose to the radiator.
- Using the J 38185 , reposition the lower radiator hose clamp. CAUTION: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- If the engine block drain plug was removed, perform the following: Apply pipe sealer to the drain plug. Install the drain plug. Tighten Tighten the drain plug to 22 N.m (16 ft lbs).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Using the J 38185 , reposition the upper radiator hose clamp at the radiator.
- Remove the upper radiator hose from the radiator.
- Remove the air bleed hose from the radiator.
- Place a funnel into the upper radiator hose. Important: Use a 50/50 mixture of DEX-COOL antifreeze and clean, drinkable water.
- Slowly fill the cooling system through the upper hose with a 50/50 coolant mixture until the coolant comes out of the coolant air bleed hose.
- Connect the upper radiator hose to the radiator.
- Using the J 38185 , position the hose clamp into the original position on the hose.
- Connect the coolant air bleed hose at the radiator.
- Fill the radiator with coolant through the filler neck.
- Rinse away any excess coolant from the engine and the engine compartment.
Flushing
Important
- Do not use a chemical flush.
- Store used coolant in the proper manner, such as in a used engine coolant holding tank. Do not pour used coolant down a drain. Ethylene glycol antifreeze is a very toxic chemical. Do not dispose of coolant into the sewer system or ground water. This is illegal and ecologically unsound.
- Various methods and equipment can be used to flush the cooling system. If special equipment is used - such as a back flusher - follow the manufacturer's instructions. However, always remove the thermostat before back flushing the system.
- Block the drive wheels.
- Place the transmission in park (P) or neutral (N).
- Engage the park brake.
- Run the engine until the thermostat opens.
- Stop the engine.
- Follow the drain and fill procedure using only clean drinkable water. Repeat the procedure if necessary, until the fluid is nearly colorless. Refer to «Draining and Filling Cooling System»(ref-173517-S30886144552005031700000) .
- Fill the coolant surge tank to the FULL HOT mark. Refer to «Draining and Filling Cooling System»(ref-173517-S30886144552005031700000) .
