Control Module References
Programming the BCM
Note. The vehicle will not start and many other functions may not operate properly if a replacement BCM is not properly set up. The following procedures must be followed
- Programming the BCM
- Brake Pedal Position Sensor Calibration. Refer to «Brake Pedal Position Sensor Calibration»(ref-478448-S17785921642012061100000) .
- Learning the restraints ID
Note. After the procedure is completed, the personalization settings of the BCM are set to default settings. Inform the customer that the personalization must be set again.
Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) for more information.
Learning the Restraints ID
Navigate on the scan tool to Vehicle Control Systems > Module Setup > Body Control Module > Setup SDM Primary Key in BCM, then follow the instructions on the screen.
Note. After programming, perform the following to avoid future misdiagnosis
- Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
- Connect the scan tool to the data link connector.
- Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
- Use the scan tool in order to retrieve history DTCs from all modules.
- Clear all history DTCs.
TCM Reprogramming
- If the TCM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(ref-478463-S04899301762012061100000) .
- Perform the Reset Transmission Adapts - Refer to «Reset Transmission Adapts»(ref-478509-S11791080292012061100000) .
- Turn the ignition OFF for 30 seconds.
- Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF.
- Use the scan tool in order to retrieve history DTCs from all modules.
- Clear all history DTCs.
Electronic Compass Module Programming and Setup
The electronic compass module requires a calibration after the module is replaced, repaired, or as required for proper module operation. Refer to Compass Calibration and Magnetic Variance (without OnStar Only) .
Engine Control Module Programming and Setup (Gasoline Engines)
The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.
ECM Reprogramming
Note. DO NOT reprogram a FlexFuel (E85) vehicle while the fuel composition learn function is active. If necessary, drive the vehicle until the scan tool indicates that the fuel composition learn parameter is inactive. Programming with the fuel composition learn active will result in fuel trim DTCs.
- If the ECM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(ref-478463-S04899301762012061100000) .
- Engine Oil Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.
- Transmission Fluid Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Transmission Fluid Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.
Engine Control Module Programming and Setup (LGH or LML)
The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.
Note. Clear any DTCs that may have set after completing the programming procedure.
Enable ECM Reprogramming-Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .
Fuel Pump Flow Control Module Programming and Setup
If the fuel pump control module (FPCM) is replaced, it must be programmed. Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .
Glow Plug Control Module Programming and Setup (LGH or LML)
Note. The glow plug control module (GPCM) does not allow programming if its temperature is above 60°C (140°F).
The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.
Inflatable Restraint Vehicle Rollover Sensor Programming and Setup
- Key ON, Engine OFF. With the scan tool perform the Setup New ROS procedure for the inflatable restraint vehicle rollover sensor (ROS).
- Key OFF then ON again. Clear all codes and verify no current faults are present.
Instrument Cluster Programming and Setup
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) must be setup using the service programming system (SPS). Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) . The odometer information will be preprogrammed to the replacement instrument panel cluster.
Passenger Presence System Programming and Setup
| IMPORTANT | Before performing the preload procedure the passenger presence system (PPS), the front passenger seat must be completely empty of all items. The presence of any items on the front passenger seat will affect the calibration and operation of the PPS. When performing the PPS preload procedure, the instrument panel cluster (IPC) and dash lights will begin dimming ON and OFF. This is normal operation during the preload procedure and does not indicate additional system faults. |
If the PPS is replaced or serviced, perform the preload procedure for the PPS. Refer to Passenger Presence System Preload Test for the rezeroing procedure.
Radio Programming and Setup
| IMPORTANT | The radio setup files will configure the radio amplifier (if equipped), internal equalization settings, and program the vehicle identification number (VIN). Without the following setup procedure, the sound quality and volume of the radio may be degraded. |
For uplevel radios, setup is completed using the Service Programming System (SPS). Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .
If exchanging the same radio, from one vehicle to another, the VIN from the vehicle receiving the radio needs to be programmed with the scan tool.
For the base radio, use the program VIN procedure available in Special Functions menu of the scan tool. After programming the VIN cycle the ignition key with the retained accessory power (RAP) disabled.
Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Programming and Setup
| IMPORTANT | When replacing the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR), the tire pressure monitoring (TPM) information can be learned to the new RCDLR in one of two ways. These two methods are reflected in the selections below. Only choose one of the methods; it is not required to do both methods when replacing the RCDLR. If you choose to perform the Copy and Paste TPM Information procedure, Step 1 must be performed BEFORE removing the old RCDLR. This procedure requires that specific TPM information be extracted from the old RCDLR prior to its removal. |
Service Programming System (SPS)
Special Tools
EL-49642 SPS Programming Support Tool
For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools .
For step-by-step control module programming instructions, please refer to the techline information system (TIS) terminal.
Review the information below to ensure proper programming protocol.
Note. DO NOT program a control module unless you are directed by a service procedure or you are directed by a General Motors service bulletin. Programming a control module at any other time will not permanently correct a customers concern. It is essential that the TIS terminal, MDI, and/or Scan Tool, is equipped with the latest software before performing service programming. Due to the time requirements of programming a controller, install EL-49642 SPS Programming Support Tool to maintain system voltage. Stable battery voltage is critical during programming. Any fluctuation, spiking, over voltage or loss of voltage will interrupt programming. If the above tool is not available, DO NOT connect a battery charger, connect a fully charged 12V jumper or booster pack disconnected from the AC voltage supply. Some modules will require additional programming/setup events to be performed before or after programming. Some vehicles may require the use of a CANDi or MDI module for programming. Review the appropriate service information for these procedures. DTCs may set during programming. Clear DTCs after programming is complete. Clearing powertrain DTCs will set the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) system status indicators to NO.
Ensure the following conditions are met before programming a control module
- Vehicle system voltage: There is not a charging system concern. All charging system concerns must be repaired before programming a control module. Battery voltage is greater than 12 volts but less than 16 volts. The battery must be fully charged before programming the control module. Turn OFF or disable any system that may put a load on the vehicles battery, such as the following components: Interior lights Exterior lights including daytime running lights (DRL) - Applying the parking brake, on most vehicles, disables the DRL system Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems Engine cooling fans Radio, etc.
- The ignition switch must be in the proper position. SPS prompts you to turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. DO NOT change the position of the ignition switch during the programming procedure, unless instructed to do so.
- Make certain all tool connections are secure, including the following components and circuits: Scan Tool The RS-232 communication cable port The connection at the data link connector (DLC) The voltage supply circuits MDI The USB, Ethernet or Wireless communication port The connection at the data link connector (DLC)
- DO NOT disturb the tool harnesses while programming. If an interruption occurs during the programming procedure, programming failure or control module damage may occur.
In the event of an interrupted or unsuccessful programming event, perform the following steps
- DO NOT turn the ignition OFF. Ensure that all control module and DLC connections are secure and the TIS terminal operating software is up to date.
- Attempt to reprogram the control module.
- If the control module can still not be programmed, turn the ignition OFF for at least one minute.
- Turn the ignition ON and attempt to reprogram the control module. The control module should program. If the control module still cannot be programmed, replace the control module.
After successfully programming the control module, ensure that all post programming procedures are performed; refer to Control Module References for the appropriate control module Programming and Setup document for any required procedures.
Theft Deterrent Module Programming and Setup
- Connect a scan tool to the vehicle in the Pass-thru arrangement.
- Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
- Ensure that all power consuming devices are turned OFF on the vehicle.
- On the Techline Terminal, select Service Programming System and follow the Techline Terminal on-screen instructions. Go to TDM Theft Deterrent Module from the controller list and select the appropriate on-screen calibration options.
- After the programming has completed, turn the ignition OFF for 30 seconds.
- Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
- On the Techline Terminal, go to V.T.D. Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn from the controller list and select Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn, ECM or PK3 Replaced. Follow the on-screen instructions.
- At this point the scan tool must remain connected for the duration of the 10-minute relearn procedure.
- Observe the scan tool, after approximately 12 minutes the scan tool will display "Programming Successful, Turn OFF Ignition". The vehicle is now ready to relearn the key information and/or the passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
- Turn OFF the ignition and wait 2 minutes.
- With a master vehicle key, turn the ignition to the RUN position for 15 seconds, then start the vehicle. The TDM and ECM have now relearned the pre-release password and the challenge/response data.
- With a scan tool, clear any DTCs.
Transmission Control Module Programming and Setup
- The transmission control module (TCM) must be programmed with the proper software/calibrations. Ensure that the following conditions exist in order to prepare for TCM programming: The battery is fully charged. The ignition switch is in the RUN position. The Techline equipment cable connection at the data link connector (DLC) is secure.
- Program the TCM using the latest software matching the vehicle. Refer to up-to-date Techline equipment user instructions.
- If the TCM fails to program, proceed as follows: Ensure that the TCM connection is OK. Inspect the Techline equipment for the latest software version. Attempt to program the TCM. If the TCM still cannot be programmed properly, replace the TCM.
