DESCRIPTION
Cruise control system has capability to cruise, coast, resume speed and accelerate at speeds above 25 MPH. System components include mode control switch, cruise control module, electrical release switches and electrical harness.
CRUISE CONTROL MODULE
Cruise control module is mounted on engine side of cowl near master cylinder. Module has electronic controller and electric motor. Electric motor operates throttle position in response to electronic controller commands. Cruise control module is not serviceable.
Scheme 5
ELECTRIC BRAKE RELEASE SWITCH
Brake pedal has 2 switches when vehicle is equipped with cruise control. The combination stop light/cruise control switch is used in series with plunger type switch. When brakes are applied, each switch disengages cruise control system.
ELECTRIC CLUTCH RELEASE SWITCH
Manual transmission vehicles use plunger type switch, in series with 2 brake switches. When clutch pedal is depressed, cruise control system is disengaged.
MODE CONTROL SWITCH
Mode control switch controls various operation modes of cruise control. Switch is located on multi-function lever.
"SET"
With vehicle speed at or above 25 MPH (cruise control switch in "ON" position), depress and release set/coast switch. Vehicle speed will then be set.
"COAST"
To decrease speed, depress and the hold set/coast switch. When vehicle has slowed to desired speed, release switch to set new speed.
"RESUME"
To resume speed, depress resume switch momentarily. Vehicle will return to previous speed.
VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR
The vehicle speed sensor is located in the transmission or transfer case. Signal from speed sensor is sent to digital ratio adapter in instrument cluster.
CRUISE CONTROL CABLE
- Unlock cable conduit engine fitting. Move cable conduit until throttle plate begins to open.
- Move conduit in opposite direction enough to close throttle. Hold conduit in place and install lock.
- Depress brake pedal. Pull lever on switch to its stop.
- Pull brake pedal up against pedal stop. Varify brake light operation.
TESTING
Note. Vehicles with computerized engine controls, should be tested for stored computer codes. Codes and related problems must be repaired prior to cruise control diagnosis and repair. For additional information, see COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS section.
PRELIMINARY INSPECTION
Check cruise control and speedometer fuses. Inspect cruise control connection at convenience center. Ensure cruise control and throttle linkage is moving freely. Check cruise control cable adjustment.
