Engine Oil Pan Removal - v8 GMC Pickup R1500

Van & Pickup Models

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle and drain engine oil. Remove exhaust crossover pipe. If equipped with automatic transmission, remove inspection cover.
  2. On 4WD pickup models with automatic transmission, remove strut rods at engine mounts. Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan. Clean all gasket mating surfaces. When installing, apply 1/8" bead of sealer on entire oil pan sealing flange. Align holes of gasket on block and install oil pan.

Van Models

  1. Disconnect negative battery cables from both batteries. Remove engine cover, transmission and engine oil dipsticks. Disconnect engine dipstick tube at left rocker cover. Disconnect transmission dipstick tube and T.V. cable at injection pump rod.
  2. Remove upper bellhousing bolt and vacuum pump. Raise and support vehicle. Remove drive shaft. Disconnect speedometer cable at transmission. Disconnect torque converter clutch connector, shift linkage and ATF cooler lines at transmission.
  3. Remove flex plate inspection cover and flex plate-to-torque converter bolts. Support transmission. Remove transmission mount-to-crossmember nut and remove crossmember. Remove bellhousing-to-cylinder case bolts. Remove transmission and flex plate. Remove dipstick tube from engine oil pan. NOTE: Crankshaft rotation may be necessary so that forward throw, No. 1 and No. 2 journals are up to provide pan clearance.
  4. Drain engine oil. Disconnect engine oil cooler lines at block. Remove starter. Disconnect battery and cooler line clips. Remove oil pan retaining bolts. Lower pan from block. Remove oil pump-to-main cap bolt, disconnect pump drive shaft and let assembly fall in pan. Remove oil pan.
  5. Clean all gasket mating surfaces. Before installing, apply RTV sealer on oil pan sealing flange. Install dipstick tube in pan before fully seating oil pan. Install oil pump. Align holes of gasket on block and install oil pan.

All Other Models

  1. Disconnect negative battery cables from both batteries. Raise and support vehicle and drain engine oil. Remove transmission dust cover. Remove oil pan bolts. Remove left engine mount through bolt. Raise engine and remove oil pan.
  2. Clean mating surfaces of oil and old gasket. When installing, apply 1/32" bead of sealer on entire oil pan sealing flange. Sealer must be wet to touch when bolts are tightened.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove fan shroud. Remove air cleaner and distributor cap. Raise and support vehicle and drain engine oil. On manual transmission models, remove starter. NOTE: Pressure line is removed to prevent damage when engine is lifted.
  2. Remove lower bellhousing cover and oil filter. Remove oil pressure line from block (if equipped). Remove front engine mount through bolts. Raise engine and remove oil pan bolts. Remove oil pan and clean all gasket surfaces.
