REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section before disconnecting battery.

Removal & Installation (Front)

Mark park position of wiper arms with tape to aid in reinstallation. Disconnect washer hose. Lift wiper arm assembly and pull retaining latch. Remove wiper arm assembly from transmission drive shaft. To install, reverse removal procedure. Check wiper system operation.

Removal & Installation (Rear)

Disconnect washer hose. Lift wiper arm assembly and pull retaining latch. Remove wiper arm assembly from wiper motor drive shaft. Install wiper arm onto serrated wiper motor drive shaft in such a position where wiper blade will rest in a proper parked position. Lift wiper arm extension and push in retaining latch. Install washer hose. Check wiper operation.

  1. Turn steering wheel to straight-ahead position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument panel trim cover. Disconnect shift cable from steering column shift tube lever. Remove upper pinch bolt from column intermediate shaft. Mark intermediate shaft yoke in relation to steering shaft for reassembly reference.
  2. Remove steering wheel. Disconnect electrical connectors as necessary. While supporting steering column, remove bolts from steering column upper support bracket. Remove steering column.
  3. Remove lock plate cover. Screw center post of Lock Plate Compressor (J-23653) onto steering shaft as far as it will go. Compress lock plate by turning center post nut clockwise. (Scheme 14)
  4. Pry snap ring out of shaft groove. Discard ring. Remove lock plate compressor. Remove lock plate. Remove turn signal cancel cam. Remove upper bearing spring and thrust washer. Turn multifunction lever upward (right turn position).
  5. Pull multifunction lever straight out to remove. Remove hazard warning knob. Remove turn signal switch assembly mounting screws. Pull switch assembly and wiring harness out of column. Remove wire protector. Remove buzzer switch assembly. Remove lock cylinder retaining screw.
  6. Remove lock cylinder set. Remove retaining ring from upper end of steering shaft. Slide steering shaft out of column assembly. Remove dimmer switch and actuator rod. Remove ignition switch. Remove 4 screws securing gear shift bowl to column housing. Remove upper bearing retainer. Separate gear shift bowl from column housing. Remove cover for access to wiper switch. Remove wiper switch.
  7. To install, reverse removal procedure using new lock plate snap ring. Tighten intermediate shaft upper pinch bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (41 N.m).

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument panel bezel. Disconnect switch electrical connector. Remove switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect battery negative cable. Remove wiper arms. Remove cowl vent grille. Disconnect wiper motor electrical connector. Loosen drive link bracket nuts where motor crank arm is attached to transmission arm. DO NOT remove crank arm from motor.
  2. Separate transmission arm from motor crank arm. Remove wiper motor mounting screws. Remove wiper motor. To install, reverse removal procedure. Lubricate contact point of motor crank arm and transmission arm before connecting components.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove wiper arm. Remove motor cover. Disconnect electrical connector. Remove bolt, nut, spacer and washer from motor. Remove motor. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten wiper motor mounting bolt/nut to 53 INCH lbs. (6 N.m).
