DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
A permanent magnet (PM) motor operates each power window. Each motor raises and lowers the glass when voltage is supplied to it. The direction the motor turns depends on polarity of the supply voltage. The switches control the supply voltage polarity.
The master door lock/power window switch assembly controls both motors. The right window switch controls only the right window motor. Each motor is protected by a built-in circuit breaker. If a window switch is held too long with the window obstructed or after the window is fully up or down, the circuit breaker opens the circuit. The circuit breaker resets automatically as it cools.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer system have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
Before proceeding to TESTING, perform the following visual inspections
- Check POWER WINDOW CIRCUIT BREAKER for damage. Replace if damaged.
- Check power window voltage supply fuse. If fuse is blown, service and repair source of overload. Replace fuse.
TESTING
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer system have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
Note. Before any testing is attempted, the battery should be fully charged and all connections and pins cleaned and tightened to ensure proper continuity and ground.
- Turn ignition ON. Connect test light between master window switch connector Pink wire and ground. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, repair open circuit in Pink wire.
- Connect test light between master window switch connector Pink and Black wires. If test light illuminates, check window switch for poor connection. If connection is okay, replace master window switch. If test light does not illuminate, repair open circuit in Black ground wire.
ONLY RIGHT HAND POWER WINDOW INOPERATIVE FROM EITHER SWITCH
- Disconnect RH power window motor connector. Check for continuity between Dark Blue wire and ground, and then between Brown wire and ground. If there is continuity in both cases, go to next step. If there is no continuity on one or both wires, go to step 3).
- Turn ignition switch to RUN and move RH switch to UP position. Check for battery voltage between Dark Blue wire and ground. If battery voltage is present, replace RH power window motor. If battery voltage is not present, go to step 4).
- Disconnect harness 3-pin, (or 6-pin), connector (behind RH side of instrument panel. Check for continuity between Blue/White, (or Dark Blue/White), wire at crossbody half of harness connector and ground. Repeat for Tan/White wire. If there is continuity on both wires, check continuity of RH power window switch. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/gmc/jimmy-typhoon/1992-1993/remont/windows/#power-windows) . If there is no continuity on one or both wires, go to step 5).
- Disconnect harness 3-pin, (or 6-pin), connector (behind RH side of instrument panel. Check for battery voltage between Pink wire at crossbody half of harness connector and ground. If battery voltage is present, check continuity of RH power window switch. Refer to «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/gmc/jimmy-typhoon/1992-1993/remont/windows/#power-windows) . If battery voltage is not present, repair open in Pink wire.
- Disconnect harness 6-pin, (or 8-pin), connector behind LH side of instrument panel. Check for continuity between Blue/White, (or Dark Blue/White), wire at crossbody half of harness connector and ground. Repeat for Tan/White wire. If there is continuity on both wires, Repair open in appropriate wire. If there is no continuity on one or both wires, check continuity of LH power window master switch. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/gmc/jimmy-typhoon/1992-1993/remont/windows/#power-windows) .
ONLY DRIVER'S DOOR POWER WINDOW INOPERATIVE
- Disconnect LH power window motor connector. Check for continuity between Dark Blue wire and ground, and then between Brown wire and ground. If there is continuity in both cases, go to step 3). If there is no continuity on one or both wires, go to next step.
- Disconnect LH power window switch connector. Check for continuity between Dark Blue wire and ground, and then between Brown wire and ground. If there is continuity in both cases, repair open in Dark Blue or Brown wire between switch and motor. If there is no continuity on one or both wires, replace power window master switch.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN and move LH switch to UP position. Check for battery voltage between LH power window motor connector Dark Blue wire and ground. If battery voltage is present, replace LH power window motor. If battery voltage is not present, go to step 4).
- Turn ignition switch to RUN and move RH switch to UP position. Check for battery voltage between LH power window switch connector Dark Blue wire and ground. If battery voltage is present, repair open in Dark Blue wire between switch and motor. If battery voltage is not present, go to step 5).
- Measure voltage between power window master switch connector Pink wire and ground. If there is battery voltage, replace power window master switch. If there is no battery voltage, repair open in Pink wire.
Connect test lamp between power window switch connector Pink wire and ground. If test lamp lights, replace power windpw switch. If test lamp does not light, repair open in Pink wire.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer system have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
Removal & Installation (Window Motor)
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise window to full up position. Secure glass to door frame using cloth-backed tape. Remove door garnish molding. Insert Door Handle Remover (J 9886-01) between handle and bearing plate.
- Align door handle remover tool with door handle and push to disengage clip. Pull handle from door, and remove bearing plate. Remove armrest mounting screws and armrest. Remove power window switch. See WINDOW SWITCH.
- Using Trim Panel Remover (J 38778) pry retainers from door frame, and remove door trim panel. Remove armrest bracket. Remove water dam. Disconnect electrical connectors from motor. CAUTION: Sector gear must be locked into position. Regulator lift arm is under tension from counterbalance spring and could cause personal injury if sector gear is not locked in position.
- Drill hole through regulator sector gear and backplate. Install bolt and nut locking sector gear into position. Drill out motor mounting rivets. Remove motor from window regulator. To install, reverse removal procedure. Use 3/16" (4.8 mm) rivets to install motor and regulator.
Removal & Installation (Window Switch)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove door trim panel. See WINDOW MOTOR. Remove inner handle housing. Disconnect electrical connector. Press in both spring clips and remove power window switch. Remove power window switch from escutcheon. To install, reverse removal procedure.
