GENERAL TOWING INFORMATION
Note. American vehicle manufacturers use an anti-theft steering column lock. The system locks steering, shift mechanisms and ignition systems together. Special provisions are necessary when switch is in the "LOCK" position and key is not available.
- Remove loose or protruding parts of damaged vehicle such as hoods, doors, fenders, trim, etc. Remove exhaust tips and any other optional equipment that may interfere with towing sling.
- Operator should refrain from from going under vehicle while it is lifted by towing equipment. Support vehicle with safety stands if it is necessary to go underneath vehicle.
- Padding should be placed between tow sling and any painted surfaces. When using tow hooks on rear suspension, position hooks so as not to damage brake lines. Do not allow towing equipment to rest on fuel tank.
- Do not hook vehicle by front or rear shock absorber or coil springs (if used). Do not lift or tow the vehicle by attaching to or securing to the bumper energy absorber units (if used).
- Towed vehicle should be raised 4-6 inches from ground. Ensure that there is adequate clearance at opposite end of vehicle. If necessary, remove wheels from end being lifted and carry lifted end closer to ground. An 8 inch clearance must be maintained between drums (rotors) and ground.
- A safety chain completely independent of the primary towing attachment must be used. Never allow passengers to ride in a towed vehicle. State and local rules and regulations must be followed when towing a vehicle.
| CAUTION | To prevent drive train damage, shift the transmission and transfer case (if used) into the positions outlined under specific towing instructions. |

GENERAL MOTORS
- The "S" series 4WD vehicles may be towed on all four wheels provided the automatic transmission is in Park or the manual transmission is in the highest gear. Place transfer case in Neutral. It is not necessary to remove the drive shaft.
- If 4WD vehicles (except "S" series) are to be towed with all wheels on the ground, place transfer case in "2H" position and transmission in Neutral. Tow vehicle at speeds less than 35 MPH and for a maximum distance of 50 miles.
- For speeds and distances greater than specified, disconnect the rear drive shaft at rear axle carrier. Secure drive shaft to underside of vehicle. Tape "U" joint bearing journal caps. Remove front drive shaft and store in vehicle.
- All 2WD vehicles with automatic transmissions may be towed at speeds less than 35 MPH for distances up to 50 miles. These speed and distance restrictions do not apply to vehicles equipped with manual transmissions.
- The steering wheels must be unlocked, transmission in Neutral, and parking brake released. Connect towing equipment to main structural parts of vehicle, not bumpers or brackets, follow the instructions of wrecker manufacturer. NOTE: If 2WD or 4WD vehicles are to be towed with the rear wheels off the ground, the steering wheel should be locked in the straight-ahead position. Do not use steering lock mechanism.
- If 4WD vehicles (except "S" series) are to be towed with the front wheels off the ground, place transfer case in "2H" position and transmission in Neutral.
- If 4WD vehicles are to be towed with the rear wheels off the ground, place the transfer case in "2H" position and transmission in Neutral. For speeds and distances greater than specified, remove front drive shaft and store in vehicle.
