Ignition Switch & Lock Cylinder GMC Cab & Chassis S15

Steering Column Switches 2 illustrations ~259 words

DESCRIPTION

Ignition switches are typically steering column mounted, and are actuated by ignition key locking cylinders.

SERVICING

Steering column must be removed or lowered. Steering wheel and turn signal switch must be removed to gain access to ignition components.

CAUTIONLock plate is held by high spring pressure. Do not remove snap ring without using compressor tool. If steering shaft has American threads, use Compressor Tool (J-23653); if shaft has metric threads use Metric Forcing Screw (J-23653-4).
CAUTIONSome steering columns are collapsible. Special care must be taken to avoid bumping, jolting or hammering on steering shaft and gearshift tube of these columns.

Removal

Turn ignition switch to "RUN" position. Remove lock plate, turn signal switch and buzzer switch. Remove lock retaining screw and lock cylinder.

Installation

Position lock in housing. Turn key to "STOP" position while holding cylinder. Align cylinder with keyway in housing. Push lock in and install retaining screw.

Removal ("S" Series)

Lower steering column, and support column to avoid causing damage. Remove attaching screws. Disconnect actuating rod and wiring from switch and remove switch from steering column.

To install, move switch slider to far left position and then 2 detents to the right on non key-release switches. On key-release switches, move switch slider to the far left position. On all types, position rod in hole and install switch to steering column.

Removal (Except "S" Series)

Lower steering column, and support column to avoid causing damage. Remove lock cylinder. Pull switch actuating rod up until there is a definite stop, then move rod down one detent (into "LOCK" position). Remove 2 switch screws and switch assembly from vehicle.

Place lock and switch in "LOCK" position. Install actuating rod into switch, and install switch using mounting screws. Tighten slowly. Ensure switch position is not changed. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
