WORM SHAFT OPERATING TORQUE
Note. Perform worm shaft operating torque adjustment with steering gear removed from vehicle.
- Check worm shaft to ensure it is free of thrust play. Position pitman arm 11 degrees inward from parallel with worm shaft. (Scheme 1) This position is the sector gear high point.
- Connect Socket (J-34871-A) and INCH-pound torque wrench to worm shaft. Check operating torque in this position. Operating torque should be 9 INCH lbs. (1.0 N.m).
- If operating torque is not within specification, loosen or tighten adjusting nut as necessary. Recheck operating torque. If operating torque cannot be adjusted to within specification, replace steering gear assembly.
