Tracker

  1. Manufacturer recommends replacing transmission oil cooler hoses at 45,000-mile intervals. Under normal driving conditions, replace transmission fluid, and clean filter and pan magnet every 100,000 miles. Replace transfer case fluid initially at 7500 miles and then at 30,000 miles or 30 month intervals.
  2. Under severe driving conditions or towing a trailer, replace transmission fluid, and clean filter and pan magnet every 15,000 miles or 15 months. Replace transfer case fluid initially at 7500 miles and then at 15,000 miles or 15 months intervals.

Severe Conditions

Severe driving conditions are when vehicle is operated under one or more of the following conditions

  1. Most driving is in stop-and-go traffic when outside temperatures are greater than 90° F (32° C).
  2. Delivery service, Taxi or Police vehicles.
  3. Trailer towing.
  4. In hilly or mountainous terrain.
  5. Most trips are less than 4 miles.
  6. Most trips are less than 10 miles, and outside temperatures remain below freezing.
  7. Driving in dusty areas.

Transaxle & Transmission

  1. Engine must be at normal operating temperature. Park vehicle on level surface, and apply parking brake. Place selector lever in Park.
  2. Start engine, and allow it to idle. Apply brakes, shift through all gears and return selector lever to Park.
  3. Remove dipstick, wipe dipstick off and reinsert fully. Remove dipstick and read level. Fluid level should be in HOT or FULL HOT range. Add fluid (if necessary), and recheck level. DO NOT overfill.

Transfer Case

Remove transfer case fill plug (upper plug) from rear of transfer case. Fill plug is located near speedometer gear housing. Fluid level must be at bottom of fill plug hole. Install fill plug, and tighten it to 21 ft. lbs. (28 N.m).

Transmission

Use Dexron-IIE ATF (12345881).

Use SAE 75W-90 or 80W-90 gear oil with GL-4 rating.

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Place a match marks on drive shaft and flange and disconnect front drive shaft from front differential flange. Remove all transmission fluid pan bolts except 3 bolts on rear of fluid pan. Loosen remaining 3 bolts, allowing pan to tip downward so fluid will drain. Once fluid is drained, remove remaining fluid pan bolts, fluid pan and gasket. Remove filter screen and gasket.
  2. Install cleaned filter screen and NEW gasket. Tighten filter screen bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 N.m.). Install fluid pan using NEW gasket. Tighten fluid pan bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (14 N.m). Install drive shaft, and tighten drive shaft flange bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (51 N.m). Fill transmission with 1.6 qts. (1.5L) of Dexron-IIE, and check fluid level.
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove drain plug from back of transfer case, below speedometer gear housing, and drain fluid. Install drain plug. Tighten it to 21 ft. lbs. (28 N.m).
  2. Remove transfer case fill plug (upper plug) from rear of transfer case. Fill plug is located near speedometer gear housing.
  3. Fill transfer case with SAE 75W-90 or 80W-90 gear oil with GL-4 rating until fluid level is at bottom of fill plug hole. Install fill plug, and tighten it to 21 ft. lbs. (28 N.m).

Low Band Servo

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove transmission fluid pan. Remove filter screen. Remove Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) pipes from valve body. Disconnect wires from TCC solenoid and fluid pressure switch.
  2. Remove 6 bolts securing reinforcement plate and remove reinforcement plate. Remove 4 bolts and low band piston servo cover.
  3. Hold servo piston with open-end wrench. (Scheme 19) Loosen lock nut on adjusting sleeve. Using a torque wrench with a 5 mm Allen head socket, tighten servo piston adjusting screw to 18 ft. lbs. (24 N.m.).
  4. Back off servo piston adjusting screw exactly 5 turns. Tighten lock nut to 14 ft. lbs. (19 N.m.). Ensure adjusting screw does not turn while tightening lock nut.
  5. Replace servo piston cover gasket. Install servo piston cover and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 N.m.). Install reinforcement plate and tighten to 14 ft. lbs. (19 N.m). To complete installation reverse removal procedure. Tighten retaining bolts to specification see «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-55899-S42581746382001011700000).

INTERLOCK CABLE

Note. Interlock system will not allow gearshift to move from Park unless ignition is turned on. It also prevents ignition key removal unless gearshift is in Park.

  1. Remove center console cover and manual selector cover. Place gearshift in Park. Loosen interlock cable bolt. Rotate key release plate and insert a small screwdriver into hole in lower key release plate. Retaining spring will move interlock cable bracket into position. Tighten interlock cable bolt to 115 INCH lbs. (13 N.m). (Scheme 20)
  2. Ensure ignition switch operates from ACC to LOCK position and ignition key can be removed when gearshift is in Park. Move transaxle gearshift lever to any other position. Ensure ignition switch cannot be turned from ACC to LOCK position. If ignition switch will turn, readjust interlock cable.

SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID

Note. Shift lock solenoid prevents gear selector lever from being moved from Park unless brake pedal is applied.

Shift lock solenoid requires no adjustment. For diagnostic procedures, see the AUTO TRANS OVERHAUL - 3L30 article.

THROTTLE VALVE CABLE

  1. Ensure accelerator cable is adjusted correctly. Loosen and back off TV cable lock nut and adjusting nut. (Scheme 21) Turn ignition key switch to LOCK position. Have an assistant fully depress and hold accelerator pedal.
  2. Pull TV cable casing in direction "A" until tight and no cable deflection exists. (Scheme 21) Tighten lock nut to obtain a.039" (1 mm) lock nut-to-bracket clearance. When adjusting clearance, ensure adjusting nut does not contact bracket.
  3. Release accelerator pedal. Maintain lock nut-to-bracket clearance at.039" (1 mm). Rotate adjusting nut until it engages bracket. With adjusting nut even with bracket surface, tighten lock nut securely.

GEARSHIFT CABLE

  1. Remove center console covers. Place gearshift in Neutral. Loosen adjusting nut and lock nut. (Scheme 22)
  2. Ensure shift lever on transmission is in Neutral position. Pull shift control cable tight.
  3. Tighten adjusting nut and then lock nut. Ensure gearshift operates properly in all gear ranges. Install console covers.

NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Ensure gearshift lever and transmission shift selector lever are in NEUTRAL position. Loosen neutral safety switch retaining bolt. Disconnect neutral safety switch 2 wire connector. (Scheme 23)
  2. Connect a DVOM to neutral safety switch connector terminals. Rotate neutral safety switch as far clockwise (downward) as possible.
  3. Slowly rotate neutral safety switch counterclockwise (upward) until a click is heard and continuity is obtained on DVOM. Tighten switch retaining bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 N.m). Connect neutral safety switch connector and negative battery cable.
