DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

TROUBLE SHOOTING & TESTING

Note. Tracker does not have an electric cooling fan.

Note. For thermoswitch, relay and motor testing, see appropriate component test in this article. For cooling fan system testing, see appropriate SYSTEM TESTING.

  1. Start and run engine. Ensure coolant temperature is less than 199°F (93°C). If cooling fan operates, go to next step. If cooling fan does not operate, go to step 3).
  2. Disconnect cooling fan thermoswitch, located near distributor. (Scheme 1) If cooling fan continues to operate after cooling fan thermoswitch is disconnected, check for short in Blue wire between cooling fan thermoswitch and cooling fan motor. If cooling fan stops running, replace cooling fan thermoswitch.
  3. If cooling fan does not operate as described in step 1), run engine until engine coolant temperature is more than 208°F (98°C). If cooling fan operates, system is okay. If cooling fan does not operate, go to next step.
  4. With cooling fan thermoswitch connector disconnected, connect a fused jumper wire between thermoswitch connector terminals (Black/White and Blue wires). If cooling fan operates, replace cooling fan thermoswitch. If cooling fan does not operate, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition switch off. Using a digital ohmmeter, backprobe cooling fan motor connector. Measure resistance between Black (ground) wire and ground. If ohmmeter reads less than.3 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than.3 ohms, repair open or bad ground connection at Black (ground) wire. Ground connection is located on left front inner fender. (Scheme 2)
  6. Using a test light, backprobe cooling fan motor connector Blue wire. If test light lights, replace cooling fan motor. If test light does not light, go to next step.
  7. Connect test light to cooling fan thermoswitch connector Black/White wire. If test light does not light, repair open in Black/White wire between cooling fan thermoswitch and junction block connector. Junction block is located behind left side of instrument panel. (Scheme 3) If test light lights, repair open in Blue wire between cooling fan thermoswitch and cooling fan motor.

Scheme 4: SYSTEM TESTING (PRIZM & PRIZM GSI)
  1. Start and run engine. Ensure engine coolant temperature is less than 194°F (90°C). If cooling fan does not operate, go to next step. If cooling fan operates, go to step 3).
  2. Cover front of radiator. Run engine until coolant temperature is more than 194°F (90°C). If cooling fan operates, system is functioning okay. If cooling fan motor does not operate, go to step 8).
  3. If cooling fan operated in step 1), disconnect cooling fan thermoswitch connector. Cooling fan thermoswitch is located on thermostat housing, near distributor. Connect a fused jumper wire between cooling fan thermoswitch connector Light Green wire and ground. If cooling fan motor stops running, replace cooling fan thermoswitch. If cooling fan motor continues to run, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch off. Using a ohmmeter, backprobe No. 2 junction block connector C3, terminal No. 2 (Light Green wire). (Scheme 4) Measure resistance between terminal No. 2 (Light Green wire) and ground.
  5. If resistance is less than 3 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 3 ohms, repair open in Light Green wire between No. 2 junction block connector C3 and cooling fan thermoswitch.
  6. If resistance was less than 3 ohms in step 5), remove fused jumper wire between cooling fan thermoswitch connector terminal Light Green wire and ground. Reconnect cooling fan thermoswitch. Turn ignition on. Remove cooling fan relay No. 1, located in engine compartment relay box. (Scheme 4)
  7. If cooling fan motor stops running, replace cooling fan relay No. 1. If cooling fan motor continues to run, repair short in Black/Red wire between No. 2 junction block and cooling fan motor.
  8. If cooling fan motor did not operate in step 2), disconnect cooling fan thermoswitch connector, located on thermostat housing, near distributor. If cooling fan motor starts, replace cooling fan thermoswitch. If cooling fan does not operate, go to next step.
  9. Using a digital ohmmeter, measure resistance between cooling fan thermoswitch connector Light Green wire and ground. If resistance is more than 3 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 3 ohms, repair short in Light Green wire between No. 2 junction block and cooling fan thermoswitch.
  10. Leaving cooling fan thermoswitch disconnected, turn ignition on. Using a test light, backprobe cooling fan motor connector Black/Red wire. If test light lights, go to next step. If test light does not light, go to step 12).
  11. Turn ignition off. Using a digital ohmmeter, backprobe cooling fan motor connector terminal No. 2 White/Black (ground) wire and ground. Measure resistance. If resistance is more than 3 ohms, repair White/Black (ground) wire. If resistance is less than 3 ohms, replace cooling fan motor.
  12. If test light did not light in step 10), backprobe No. 2 junction block connector C5 terminal No. 11 (Black/Red wire). (Scheme 4) If test light lights, repair open in Black/Red wire between No. 2 junction block and cooling fan motor. If test light does not light, replace No. 1 cooling fan relay.

SYSTEM TESTING (STORM & STORM GSI)

  1. Start and warm engine to 185°F (85°C). If cooling and condenser fan operate, go to next step. If cooling fan only operates, go to step 6). If condenser fan only operates go to step 11). If neither fans operate, go to step 3).
  2. If cooling and condenser fans operate, disconnect thermoswitch connector, located on left lower side of radiator. With A/C on, run engine for 5 minutes. If cooling and condenser fans both operate at least once in 5 minutes, system is okay. If neither fan operates in 5 minutes, go to step 16).
  3. If neither fan operates in step 1), connect a fused jumper wire between cooling fan check connector (White wire) and ground. Cooling fan check connector is located above brake booster. If cooling and condenser fans operate, go to next step. If neither fan operates, go to step 18). If cooling fan only operates, go to step 6). If condenser fan only operates, go to step 11).
  4. If cooling and condenser fans operate in step 3), disconnect thermoswitch. Thermoswitch is located on left lower side of radiator. Connect a jumper wire between White and Black wires. If cooling and condenser fans operate, replace thermoswitch. If neither fan operates, go to next step.
  5. Remove jumper wire from thermoswitch. Using a digital ohmmeter, measure resistance between thermoswitch connector Black (ground) wire and ground. If resistance is more than 3 ohms, repair Black (ground) wire between thermoswitch and ground connection, located on left front engine compartment. If resistance is less than 3 ohms, repair White wire between thermoswitch connector and condenser fan relay.
  6. If cooling fan only operates in step 3), backprobe condenser relay connector with a test light. Cooling and condenser fan relays are located in fuse/relay box on left front side of engine compartment. Connect test light to condenser relay terminal No. 1 (Red/White wire). If test light does not light, repair open in Red/White wire between cooling fan and condenser fan relays. If test light lights, go to next step.
  7. Using a test light, backprobe condenser fan relay connector terminal No. 2 (Blue/Orange wire). If test light does not light, repair open in Blue/Orange wire between condenser fan fuse (E4) and condenser fan relay. Condenser fan fuse is located in fuse/relay box, on left front side of engine compartment. If test light lights, go to next step.
  8. Using a test light, backprobe condenser fan relay connector terminal No. 4 (Blue wire). If test light does not light, replace condenser fan relay. If test light lights, go to next step.
  9. Using a test light, backprobe condenser fan motor connector terminal No. 1 (Blue wire). If test light does not light, repair open in Blue wire between condenser fan motor and condenser fan relay. If test light lights, go to next step.
  10. Disconnect condenser fan motor connector. Using a digital ohmmeter, measure resistance between condenser fan motor connector terminal No. 2 (Black wire) and ground. If ohmmeter reads less than 3 ohms, replace condenser fan motor. If ohmmeter reads more than 3 ohms, repair No. 2 terminal (Black wire) between condenser fan motor and ground. Ground connection is located on left front side of engine compartment.
  11. If condenser fan only operates as described in steps 1) and 3), remove condenser fan and cooling fan relays from fuse/relay box on left front side of engine compartment. Using a digital ohmmeter, measure resistance between cooling fan relay connector terminal No. 3 (White wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 3 ohms, repair open in White wire between cooling and condenser fan relays. If ohmmeter reads less than 3 ohms, go to next step.
  12. Install condenser fan relay and cooling fan relay. Using a test light, backprobe cooling fan relay terminal No. 2 (Black/Green wire). If test light does not light, repair open in Black/Green wire between cooling fan relay and 30-amp cooling fan fusible link, located in fuse/relay box on left front side of engine compartment. If test light lights, go to next step.
  13. Using a test light, backprobe cooling fan relay connector terminal No. 4 (Black/Blue wire). If test light does not light, replace cooling fan relay. If test light lights, go to next step.
  14. Using a test light, backprobe cooling fan motor connector terminal No. 1 (Black/Blue wire). If test light does not light, repair open in Black/Blue wire between cooling fan motor and cooling fan relay. If test light lights, go to next step.
  15. Disconnect cooling fan motor connector. Using a digital ohmmeter, measure resistance between cooling fan motor connector terminal No. 2 (Black wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 3 ohms, repair open in Black wire between cooling fan motor and ground. Ground connection is located on left front side of engine compartment. If resistance is less than 3 ohms, replace radiator fan motor.
  16. Disconnect triple switch connector, located on A/C receiver drier, on right side of radiator. Remove condenser fan relay from fuse/relay box. Using a digital ohmmeter, measure resistance between triple switch terminal No. 1 (White wire) and condenser fan relay terminal No. 3 (White wire). If resistance is more than 3 ohms, repair open in White wire between triple switch and condenser fan relay. If ohmmeter reads less than 3 ohms, go to next step.
  17. Using a digital ohmmeter, measure resistance between triple switch connector terminal No. 2 (Black wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 3 ohms, repair Black wire between triple switch and ground. Ground connection is located on left front side of engine compartment. If resistance is less than 3 ohms, replace receiver/drier. Triple switch is cannot be replaced separately.
  18. Disconnect thermoswitch connector. Using a digital ohmmeter, measure resistance between thermoswitch connector terminal No. 2 (Black wire) and ground. Thermoswitch is located on lower left side of radiator. If resistance is more than 3 ohms, repair Black wire between thermoswitch and ground. Ground connector is located on left front side of engine compartment. If resistance is less than 3 ohms, go to next step.
  19. Connect a jumper wire between thermoswitch connector terminals (Black and White wires). Remove condenser and cooling fan relays from fuse/relay box. Using a digital ohmmeter, measure resistance between condenser fan relay connector terminal No. 3 (White wire) and ground. If ohmmeter reads more than 3 ohms, repair open in White wire between thermoswitch and condenser fan relay. If resistance is less than 3 ohms, go to next step.
  20. Measure resistance between cooling fan relay connector terminal No. 3 (White wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 3 ohms, repair open in White wire between cooling fan relay and condenser fan relay. If resistance is less than 3 ohms, go to next step.
  21. Using a test light, backprobe White/Blue wire on alternator. If test light does not light, replace alternator. If test light lights, go to next step.
  22. Using a test light, backprobe restart relay connector terminal No. 5 (White/Red wire). Restart relay is located in fuse/relay box on left front side of engine compartment. If test light lights, go to next step. If test light does not light, check/repair open in White/Blue wire between alternator and restart relay. If wire is okay, replace restart relay.
  23. Using a test light, backprobe A/C-heater relay connector terminal No. 1 (Black wire). A/C-heater relay is located in fuse/relay box on left front side of engine compartment. If test light does not light, repair open in Black wire between A/C-heater relay and restart relay. If test light lights, repair open in White/Red wire between A/C-heater relay and cooling fan relay.

COOLING FAN THERMOSWITCH TEST (METRO, PRIZM & PRIZM GSI)

To test cooling fan thermoswitch, remove thermoswitch from vehicle. Using ohmmeter, ensure continuity is correct between wire connector and thermoswitch body (or both thermoswitch terminals on Metro). Thermoswitch may be gradually heated in water for testing. See COOLING FAN THERMOSWITCH table.

Scheme 5: COOLING FAN & MAIN RELAYS TEST (PRIZM & PRIZM GSI)
  1. Cooling fan and main relays are located in engine compartment relay box. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between relay terminals No. 1 and No. 2. (Scheme 5) Resistance should be 50-80 ohms.
  2. Connect battery power across terminals No. 1 and 2. When testing fan relay, continuity should exist between terminals No. 3 and 4 when relay is energized. When testing main relay, continuity should exist between terminals No. 4 and 5 when relay is energized. Replace relay if tests are not as specified.

COOLING FAN MOTOR TEST (EXCEPT METRO)

Unplug fan motor connector. Connect battery and ammeter to fan motor. (Scheme 6) Fan should operate smoothly and amperage draw should be 5.8-7.4 amps.
